BACKGROND: One of the important areas of heart research is to analyze heart rate variability during (HRV) walking. OBJECTIVE: In this research, we investigated the correction between heart activation and the variations of walking paths. METHOD: We employed Shannon entropy to analyze how the information content of walking paths affects the information content of HRV. Eight healthy students walked on three designed walking paths with different information contents while we recorded their ECG signals. We computed and analyzed the Shannon entropy of the R-R interval time series (as an indicator of HRV) versus the Shannon entropy of different walking paths and accordingly evaluated their relation. RESULTS: According to the obtained results, walking on the path that contains more information leads to less information in the R-R time series. CONCLUSION: The analysis method employed in this research can be extended to analyze the relation between other physiological signals (such as brain or muscle reactions) and the walking path.

INTRODUCTION: Impaired copy of intersecting pentagons from the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), has been used to assess dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD). We used a digitizing tablet during the pentagon copying test (PCT) as a potential tool for evaluating early cognitive deficits in PD without major cognitive impairment. We also aimed to uncover the neural correlates of the identified parameters using whole-brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: We enrolled 27 patients with PD without major cognitive impairment and 25 age-matched healthy controls (HC). We focused on drawing parameters using a digitizing tablet. Parameters with between-group differences were correlated with cognitive outcomes and were used as covariates in the whole-brain voxel-wise analysis using voxel-based morphometry; familywise error (FWE) threshold p < 0.001. RESULTS: PD patients differed from HC in attention domain z-scores (p < 0.0001). In terms of tablet parameters, the groups differed in Shannon entropy (horizontal in-air, p = 0.003), which quantifies the movements between two strokes. In PD, a correlation was found between the median of Shannon entropy (horizontal in-air) and attention z-scores (R = -0.55, p = 0.006). The VBM revealed an association between our drawing parameter of interest and gray matter (GM) volume variability in the right superior parietal lobe (SPL). CONCLUSION: Using a digitizing tablet during the PCT, we identified a novel entropy-based parameter that differed between the nondemented PD and HC groups. This in-air parameter correlated with the level of attention and was linked to GM volume variability of the region engaged in spatial attention.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of the reactions of different organs to external stimuli is an important area of research in physiological science. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we investigated the correlation between the brain and facial muscle activities by information-based analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and electromyogram (EMG) signals using Shannon entropy. METHOD: The EEG and EMG signals of thirteen subjects were recorded during rest and auditory stimulations using relaxing, pop, and rock music. Accordingly, we calculated the Shannon entropy of these signals. RESULTS: The results showed that rock music has a greater effect on the information of EEG and EMG signals than pop music, which itself has a greater effect than relaxing music. Furthermore, a strong correlation (r= 0.9980) was found between the variations of the information of EEG and EMG signals. CONCLUSION: The activities of the facial muscle and brain are correlated in different conditions. This technique can be utilized to investigate the correlation between the activities of different organs versus brain activity in different situations.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of the heart activity is one of the important areas of research in biomedical science and engineering. For this purpose, scientists analyze the activity of the heart in various conditions. Since the brain controls the heart's activity, a relationship should exist among their activities. OBJECTIVE: In this research, for the first time the coupling between heart and brain activities was analyzed by information-based analysis. METHODS: Considering Shannon entropy as the indicator of the information of a system, we recorded electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals of 13 participants (7 M, 6 F, 18-22 years old) in different external stimulations (using pineapple, banana, vanilla, and lemon flavors as olfactory stimuli) and evaluated how the information of EEG signals and R-R time series (as heart rate variability (HRV)) are linked. RESULTS: The results indicate that the changes in the information of the R-R time series and EEG signals are strongly correlated (ρ=-0.9566). CONCLUSION: We conclude that heart and brain activities are related.

In this paper, we present the results of the research concerning extraction of informative gene expression profiles from high-dimensional array of gene expressions considering the state of patients' health using clustering method, ML-based binary classifiers and fuzzy inference system. Applying of the proposed stepwise procedure can allow us to extract the most informative genes taking into account both the subtypes of disease or state of the patient's health for further reconstruction of gene regulatory networks based on the allocated genes and following simulation of the reconstructed models. We used the publicly available gene expressions data as the experimental ones which were obtained using DNA microarray experiments and contained two types of patients' gene expression profiles-the patients with lung cancer tumor and healthy patients. The stepwise procedure of the data processing assumes the following steps-in the beginning, we reduce the number of genes by removing non-informative genes in terms of statistical criteria and Shannon entropy; then, we perform the stepwise hierarchical clustering of gene expression profiles at hierarchical levels from 1 to 10 using the SOTA (Self-Organizing Tree Algorithm) clustering algorithm with correlation distance metric. The quality of the obtained clustering was evaluated using the complex clustering quality criterion which is considered both the gene expression profiles distribution relative to center of the clusters where these gene expression profiles are allocated and the centers of the clusters distribution. The result of this stage execution was a selection of the optimal cluster at each of the hierarchical levels which corresponded to the minimum value of the quality criterion. At the next step, we have implemented a classification procedure of the examined objects using four well known binary classifiers-logistic regression, support-vector machine, decision trees and random forest classifier. The effectiveness of the appropriate technique was evaluated based on the use of ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) analysis using criteria, included as the components, the errors of both the first and the second kinds. The final decision concerning the extraction of the most informative subset of gene expression profiles was taken based on the use of the fuzzy inference system, the inputs of which are the results of the appropriate single classifiers operation and the output is the final solution concerning state of the patient's health. To our mind, the implementation of the proposed stepwise procedure of the informative gene expression profiles extraction create the conditions for the increasing effectiveness of the further procedure of gene regulatory networks reconstruction and the following simulation of the reconstructed models considering the subtypes of the disease and/or state of the patient's health.

OBJECTIVE: The human body is colonized by bacteria, fungi and viruses. Resident commensal bacteria are a fundamental line of resistance to colonization by exogenous microbes. They actively regulate the production of nutrients by the host through a negative feedback mechanism, in order to prevent the availability of nutrients for potential pathogens. While only a small fraction of these microorganism may be pathogenic, the relationship between host and commensal microbiome is now studied as a whole, impacting several aspects of the host biology. Some studies have made clear the progresses in examining the role of microbiome on transplants and graft versus host disease (GVHD) severity and its pathogenesis: the risk of complications from allogenic hematopoietic stem cells transplantation (HSCT) is greater with the highest mortality if a patient has a lower bacterial diversity in the gut prior to the transplantation process beginning. Microbiota-associated molecular patterns are directly recognized by pathogen recognition receptors. The development of molecular methods has greatly expanded our knowledge of the composition and function of the microbiome in health and disease, shortening the response times vs. microbiological culture tests. The gut flora can make the difference when it comes to allo-HSCT. The aim of the study was to monitor microbiome of 10 children during allo-HSCT. METHODS: Oral specimens and gut faecal microbiome (100 grams) samples were collected at 2, 16, 24 days. The samples were analysed by polymerase chain reaction and primary sequencing was done. To calculate the biodiversity of microbiome the Shannon index and the Observed species index were chosen. RESULTS: Our study suggests some differences in the diversity indices (DIs) in 5 children affected by GVHD vs. not affected. The DIs in oral and faecal specimens show in all patients a diminution in the post-transplant phase with an improvement in species diversity after 16 days from the transplant. The Observed species index in faeces specimens after 16 days was higher in patients which had not GVHD; moreover, patients with GVHD showed a deterioration at 24 days. Oral specimens after 24 days showed a parallel trend in the two groups. The Shannon index shows a downward trend in faeces specimens of the children with GVHD at 24 days; the children without GVHD recover a good trend of entropy. Oral specimens at 24 days show low entropy in the two groups. Very aggressive bacterial species as Cronobacter and Routella in the faeces specimens of a child had not serious consequences for disease status: Cronobacter were not present 24 days after transplantation Conclusions: The data show the microbial metabolome could have an impact on patients with GVHD vs. no GVHD. A better understanding of the role of the oral and gut microbiome in GVHD can give directions to move towards the development of innovative approaches for preventing GVHD following allo-HCT, reducing also antibiotic therapy.

The nature of neural codes is central to neuroscience. Do neurons encode information through relatively slow changes in the firing rates of individual spikes (rate code) or by the precise timing of every spike (temporal code)? Here we compare the loss of information due to correlations for these two possible neural codes. The essence of Shannon's definition of information is to combine information with uncertainty: the higher the uncertainty of a given event, the more information is conveyed by that event. Correlations can reduce uncertainty or the amount of information, but by how much? In this paper we address this question by a direct comparison of the information per symbol conveyed by the words coming from a binary Markov source (temporal code) with the information per symbol coming from the corresponding Bernoulli source (uncorrelated, rate code). In a previous paper we found that a crucial role in the relation between information transmission rates (ITRs) and firing rates is played by a parameter s, which is the sum of transition probabilities from the no-spike state to the spike state and vice versa. We found that in this case too a crucial role is played by the same parameter s. We calculated the maximal and minimal bounds of the quotient of ITRs for these sources. Next, making use of the entropy grouping axiom, we determined the loss of information in a Markov source compared with the information in the corresponding Bernoulli source for a given word length. Our results show that in the case of correlated signals the loss of information is relatively small, and thus temporal codes, which are more energetically efficient, can replace rate codes effectively. These results were confirmed by experiments.
Although entropy-based measurements of gait dynamics are becoming widely used tools for fall risk assessment, their relationship to fall occurrence is still unclear. The aim of this study was hence to compare fallers and non-fallers in terms of gait dynamics assessed by the multiscale and Shannon entropy. This study included 139 participants, aged 60-80 years, divided into two groups according to fall occurrence during a 6-month prospective observation (38 fallers, 101 non-fallers). The methodology involved the use of the Tinetti balance assessment tool (TBAT) and 5min of overground walking with 3D accelerometers located near the L5 vertebra and shanks. We analyzed 150 strides for gait complexity, an index of complexity (CI), computed from multiscale entropy (MSE) and Shannon entropy (ShE) derived from the recurrence quantification analysis. We found no significant differences between groups in MSE and CI. The TBAT total score was significantly higher in non-fallers (P=0.033), however, both groups showed low risk of falls. ShE in the anterior-posterior direction from trunk and in the medial-lateral direction from the shanks were both significantly higher in fallers (P=0.020; P=0.024). ShE was negatively correlated with CI, the shank ShE in the vertical direction was positively correlated with TBAT. Taken together, our findings suggest that MSE is not able to distinguish between highly functional groups, whereas Shannon entropy seems to be sufficient in fall risk prediction.

A novel measure of neural spike train randomness, an entropy factor, is proposed. It is based on the Shannon entropy of the number of spikes in a time window and can be seen as an analogy to the Fano factor. Theoretical properties of the new measure are studied for equilibrium renewal processes and further illustrated on gamma and inverse Gaussian probability distributions of interspike intervals. Finally, the entropy factor is evaluated from the experimental records of spontaneous activity in macaque primary visual cortex and compared to its theoretical behavior deduced for the renewal process models. Both theoretical and experimental results show substantial differences between the Fano and entropy factors. Rather paradoxically, an increase in the variability of spike count is often accompanied by an increase of its predictability, as evidenced by the entropy factor.

The retinal ganglion axons are an important part of the visual system, which can be directly observed by fundus camera. The layer they form together inside the retina is the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). This paper describes results of a texture RNFL analysis in color fundus photographs and compares these results with quantitative measurement of RNFL thickness obtained from optical coherence tomography on normal subjects. It is shown that local mean value, standard deviation, and Shannon entropy extracted from the green and blue channel of fundus images are correlated with corresponding RNFL thickness. The linear correlation coefficients achieved values 0.694, 0.547, and 0.512 for respective features measured on 439 retinal positions in the peripapillary area from 23 eyes of 15 different normal subjects.
