A rapid strip test for semiquantitative or quantitative screening of thiabendazole in some fruit foods (fruits, fruit juices, baby foods) was developed, which is based on la¬teral flow immunoassay (LFIA). Test parameters such as membranes and buffers types, the amount and type of antibodies for labeling with gold nanoparticles, and dilution of gold-labeled antibodies and samples were optimized. The strip contains all the necessary reagents dried on membranes. The test can be accomplished within 10 min. The visual limit of detection was 2 ng ml1. For quantitative assessment a standard curve of LFIA was produced with detection limit of 0.1±0.02 ng ml1, the IC50 value of 2.2 ng ml1, and the linear working range of 0.420 ng ml1. In the test, spiked samples were analyzed. Samples of fruit juices or fruit homogenate filtrates were diluted with buffer and analysed directly without any purification. The coefficients of interassay variation were below 16 %, with recoveries ranging from 91 to 112 %. The proposed LFIA test enables a sensitive, rapid, and facile on-site screening of thiabendazole.
This article describes basic principles of retroviral shell architecture and the approaches to its studies. Elucidation of the retrovirus particle structure, both in immature and mature forms, is essential for designing compounds that could block interactions at interfaces of viral proteins, which are critical for formation and stability of the particle. Detailed understanding of HIV structure could thus be a significant tool in the search for novel types of HIV inhibitors targeted on the assembly or maturation of this virus.

Modern societies put emphasis on a better quality of human life. An important part of that seems to be healthy food. Food safety can be evaluated by chemical and microbiological assessment. The latter assessment is based on the methods used for food-borne pathogens. In the last decades rapid techniques were developed and validated by immunochemical and molecular biology methods (ELISA, PCR), including genotypization of isolated bacteria.

This review provides information on the bioremediation function of microorganisms and natural additives like humic substances biosurfactants. In this respect, phytoremediation combines a remediative function of plants with a possible complementary function of root-colonizing microflora.

The effect of recombinant divercin RV41 (DvnRV41) and its structural variants on the K-channel formation was determined. The growth of Listeria monocytogenes EGDe (sensitive phenotype) and its isogenic strain (resistant phenotype) was assessed in the presence of DvnRV41 combined or not with pinacidil, NS1619, cromakalim (as K-channel activators), iberiotoxin and glipizide (as K-channel blockers). The combined action of DvnRV41 and K activators permitted formation of ATP-dependent pores. The combination of DvnRV41 and ATP-dependent pore activator cromakalim inhibited the growth of sensitive strain. The antilisterial activity of structural variants was less important than that of DvnRV41 but their mode of action remained overall similar.

New concept of ELISA allows the counting of antigen molecules present in a solution at very low concentration, e.g. while the detection limits for the current ELISA technique is for the prostate specific antigen (PSA) 100 pg novel approach of the digital ELISA makes possible to detect it in the concentration of 0.006 pg.

Prospective methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) degrading bacterial strains and/or consortia were identified. The potential for aerobic degradation of MTBE was examined using bacterial isolates from contaminated soils and groundwater. Using the 16S rDNA protocol, two isolates capable of degrading MTBE (Rhodococcus pyridinivorans 4A and Achromobacter xylosoxidans 6A) were identified. The most efficient consortium of microorganisms was acquired from contaminated groundwater. The growth of both strains and the consortium on MTBE was supported by various organic substrates, and monitored using Bioscreen. The biochemical oxygen demand of the cultures was measured using OxiTop, and their MTBE concentrations were estimated by gas chromatography. After 3 weeks of aerobic cultivation using n-alkanes as cosubstrate, the concentration of MTBE in R. pyridinivorans 4A was reduced to 62.4 % of its initial amount (50 ppm).
