Laktoferin je transportní glykoprotein přítomný např. ve slinách, mléce nebo slzách. Je produkován též neutrofilními leukocyty. V organismu váže volné železo, čímž společně s transferinem snižuje jeho plasmatickou hladinu. Vychytání železa z přijímané potravy již ve slinách je významným nespecifickým imunitním mechanismem, protože zabraňuje přemnožení bakterií, které využívají volné železo jako růstový faktor. Kationtový N-konec molekuly je navíc schopen přímo poškodit membránu bakterií. Laktoferin prostupuje do buněk střevní mukózy pomocí receptorů zprostředkujících endocytózu. Každá molekula je schopna vázat dva ionty železa, nicméně v organismu není nikdy plně obsazena. Největší koncentrace laktoferinu je v kolostru, v mateřském mléce pak jeho koncentrace klesá. Množství laktoferinu v sekretech stoupá při zánětlivých procesech. Využívá se při léčbě chronické hepatitidy C a při přemnožení Helicobacter pylori. An iron-binding protein that was originally characterized as a milk protein. It is widely distributed in secretory fluids and is found in the neutrophilic granules of LEUKOCYTES. The N-terminal part of lactoferrin possesses a serine protease which functions to inactivate the TYPE III SECRETION SYSTEM used by bacteria to export virulence proteins for host cell invasion.
