Aim: The aim of the study was to: (a) determine whether there are differences between the personality profiles of students of non- medical healthcare programmes and the population standard; (b) to find out whether there are differences in the personality profiles between students of non-medical health care professions and exact sciences. Sample and methods: The sample included 141 respondents comprising of students of humanities and students of exact sciences from Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Sciences, Palacký University in Olomouc. As for humanities, the sample included 73 respondents studying General Nursing and Midwifery programmes. The sample of exact sciences included 68 students of Mathematics and informatics. Standardized questionnaires EPQ-R and IVE were used. The research was conducted from December 2014 to November 2015. In order to ascertain statistically significant differences in the data compared, a parametric significance test – Student t-test – was used. Statistical hypotheses were tested on significance level α = 0.05. The IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 was used for statistical processing and data sorting was performed using Microsoft Excel 2010. Results: The students of non-medical healthcare programmes had significantly lower score in empathy and extraversion than the population norm. On the psychoticism scale, students of non-medical healthcare programmes scored significantly higher than the population norm. No statistically significant difference was found on the neuroticism scale. A statistically significant difference in personality profiles between students of humanities and exact sciences was confirmed on the extraversion scale, with higher scores amongst students of humanities. Conclusion: Due to the finding that among the students of the field of study Midwife and General Nurse were detected low levels of empathy and high levels of psychoticism, would be useful to devote more space on the personality development of the health workers during their studies.

Cíl: Cílem literárního přehledu bylo vyhledat kvalitativní studie zaměřené na koncept péče v ošetřovatelství, provést jejich rozbor a syntetizovat poznatky, které se týkají obsahového vymezení náplně pojmu caring in nursing – péče v ošetřovatelství s pohledu sester i pacientů. Design: Přehledová studie. Metodika: Kvalitativní studie byly vyhledány systematickou rešerší v elektronických databázích Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), CINAHL, Medline, ScienceDirect, Wiley Library Online podle stanovených kritérií a definovaných klíčových slov za období 1970–2015. Po výběru dokumentů za pomoci diagramu třídění byla provedena analýza sedmi vybraných článků. Výsledky: Sestry chápou péči v ošetřovatelství jako vztah s pacientem, který je ze strany sestry charakterizován individuálním a empatickým přístupem, pozorností, zkušeností a citlivostí. V jeho rámci probíhá aktivní komunikace s poskytováním informací, které snižují úzkost a vedou k překonávání překážek. Tento vztah napomáhá k ochraně klientova bezpečí, autonomie, důstojnosti a pohodlí. Vyžaduje však zkušenosti sestry a je ovlivněn prostředím. Pro pacienty je v péči důležitá sestra jako osobnost (jaké má odborné znalosti, postoje a dovednosti) a její dostupnost, spolehlivost, emocionální a fyzická podpora). Závěr: Pojem péče je obsahově specifický interpersonální proces, který se vyznačuje odbornými znalostmi sester, jejich dovednostmi, osobnostní zralostí a interpersonální citlivostí, která vede k ochraně pacienta, jeho emocionální podpoře a uspokojování bio-psycho-sociálních potřeb. Výsledky přehledové studie mohou přispět k vysvětlení a pochopení podstaty péče jako základního jevu v disciplíně ošetřovatelství.
Aim: The aim of this literature review was to search for qualitative studies focusing on the concept of caring in nursing, to analyse them and to synthesize knowledge that concerns the definition of the concept of caring in nursing from the point of view of nurses and patients. Design: Review. Methods: Qualitative studies were searched for systematically in the electronic databases Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), CINAHL, Medline, Science Direct, and the Wiley Library Online, according to set criteria and defined key words for the period 1970-2015. Seven selected articles were analysed after selection of documents with the aid of a sorting chart. Results: Nurses understand caring in nursing as a relationship with patients which is characterised on the nurses' part by an individual and empathetic approach, attentiveness, experience and sensitivity. Through caring, active communication takes place, providing information which reduces anxiety and leads to the breaking down of barriers. This relationship helps protect patients' autonomy, dignity and comfort. It requires experience on the part of nurses, and it is influenced by the environment. The nurses' personal qualities (what professional knowledge, attitudes and skills they have) and their availability, reliability, and emotional and physical support are important to patients. Conclusion: The concept of caring is a content specific interpersonal process which is characterized by the professional knowledge, skills, personal maturity, and interpersonal sensitivity of nurses, which result in the protection, emotional support, and the meeting of bio-psycho-social needs of patients. The results of the overview study could contribute to an explanation and understanding of the nature of caring as a fundamental feature of the discipline of nursing.
