During the 21st century, many global health threats related to zoonoses, new or re-emerging infectious diseases, climate change and/or environmental sustainability have emerged. Achieving harmonized approaches to the detection and prevention of these health risks is often difficult because traditional approaches are usually determined by the boundaries of financially and legislatively separated scientific fields, such as more or less independently functioning human and veterinary medicine, agriculture, climatology, sociology, economics, etc. The boundaries between these individual fields however, should not be solid, and cooperation should be based on common need or purpose. For better cooperation, numerous associations and groups, professional or based on interest, are being formed. Interdepartmental cooperation often struggles with legislative, competence and communication nodes. The "One Health" concept tries to break down these barriers and set new boundaries based on a common need, which is defined as ensuring the support of well-being and the possibility of jointly solving threats to health and ecosystems. It is based on the idea of achieving better public health outcomes worldwide through interdisciplinary collaboration.

The article deals with the possible influence of an extremely low-frequency magnetic field on cellular structures. The work is carried out to verify the change of growth dynamics of exposed samples by application of a time-varying magnetic field, with a specified action value of magnetic flux density, valid in the European Union. The frequency of applied field was preliminarily confirmed as biologically active, under conditions for Ion Parametric Resonance theory, in experimental work focused on targeting Ca2+ ions bound in specific positions on cellular membranes of eukaryotic cells. In thirty experiments, the authors use the dynamics of growth over a time horizon of eight hours to elucidate the effect of the field on the proliferation activity of the cells. Since living beings are exposed to similar electromagnetic fields daily, the presented article shed some light on whether, or not the irradiation has brought a statistically significant effect under conditions specified in ICNIRP guidelines and recommendations.

Reduction of noise emission into the environment is a priority of transport policies of individual countries, as that of well as the European Union. Road traffic noise has a dominant share in the total noise production and is influenced by traffic volume, traffic composition, traffic flow speed, as well as the technical condition of the road pavement, i.e. the condition of its wearing course. The installation of low-noise wearing courses on road pavements is a very effective acoustic measure directly at the noise source. Based on the recommendation of the technical committee TC 227/WG5 of the European Committee for Standardisation CEN and on the results of the European project ROSSANE, the CPX method, which was published as an ISO standard in March 2017, is exclusively preferred for the monitoring of road pavement noise. Technologies of asphalt mixtures reducing noise have been applied in the Czech Republic. These technologies have their specific features. Regarding the acoustic assessment of these technologies in the Czech Republic, "binding technical specifications" TP 259 Asphalt mixtures for low-noise wearing courses, published by the Ministry of Transport in December 2017, are in use.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are man-made chemicals that contain at least one perfluoroalkyl moiety, [Formula: see text]. To date, over 4,000 unique PFASs have been used in technical applications and consumer products, and some of them have been detected globally in human and wildlife biomonitoring studies. Because of their extraordinary persistence, human and environmental exposure to PFASs will be a long-term source of concern. Some PFASs such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) have been investigated extensively and thus regulated, but for many other PFASs, knowledge about their current uses and hazards is still very limited or missing entirely. To address this problem and prepare an action plan for the assessment and management of PFASs in the coming years, a group of more than 50 international scientists and regulators held a two-day workshop in November, 2017. The group identified both the respective needs of and common goals shared by the scientific and the policy communities, made recommendations for cooperative actions, and outlined how the science-policy interface regarding PFASs can be strengthened using new approaches for assessing and managing highly persistent chemicals such as PFASs. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP4158.

Polymers are increasingly used for passive sampling of neutral hydrophobic organic substances (HOC) in environmental media including water, air, soil, sediment and even biological tissue. The equilibrium concentration of HOC in the polymer can be measured and then converted into equilibrium concentrations in other (defined) media, which however requires appropriate polymer to media partition coefficients. We determined thus polymer-lipid partition coefficients (KPL) of various PCB, PAH and organochlorine pesticides by equilibration of two silicones and low density polyethylene (LDPE) with fish oil and Triolein at 4 °C and 20 °C. We observed (i) that KPLwas largely independent of lipid type and temperature, (ii) that lipid diffusion rates in the polymers were higher compared to predictions based on their molecular volume, (iii) that silicones showed higher lipid diffusion and lower lipid sorption compared to LDPE and (iv) that absorbed lipid behaved like a co-solute and did not affect the partitioning of HOC at least for the smaller molecular size HOC. The obtained KPLcan convert measured equilibrium concentrations in passive sampling polymers into equilibrium concentrations in lipid, which then can be used (1) for environmental quality monitoring and assessment, (2) for thermodynamic exposure assessment and (3) for assessing the linkage between passive sampling and the traditionally measured lipid-normalized concentrations in biota. LDPE-lipid partition coefficients may also be of use for a thermodynamically sound risk assessment of HOC contained in microplastics.

Cannabis (Cannabis spp.) use and cultivation continue to increase in many (European) countries. The illicit indoor cannabis plantations that supply Belgian and European cannabis markets create problems and concerns about health and safety of intervention staff, dismantling companies, the direct environment of cannabis plantations and, eventually, of cannabis users. Main risks may come from pesticide residues on plants, cultivation infrastructure and materials; left-over plant growth-promoting substances; mycotoxins from fungal pathogens on harvested plants; and/or high levels of cannabinoids in cannabis plant parts for consumption. In the present research, we report on pesticides found in illicit indoor cannabis plantations in Belgium. EN15662 QuEChERS extraction method and LC-MS/MS analysis were used to identify pesticides in indoor cannabis plantations and thus to evaluate the hazards associated with the use, cultivation and removal of cannabis plants in plantations as well as with dismantling activities in the cultivation rooms. We found pesticides in 64.3% of 72 cannabis plant samples and in 65.2% of 46 carbon filter cloth samples. Overall, 19 pesticides belonging to different chemical classes were identified. We found o-phenylphenol, bifenazate, cypermethrin, imidacloprid, propamocarb, propiconazole and tebuconazole, which is consistent with the commonly reported pesticides from literature. In only a few cases, pesticides found in bottles with a commercial label, were also identified in plant or stagnant water samples collected from the growth rooms where the bottles had been collected. We further revealed that, even though most pesticides have a low volatility, they could be detected from the carbon filters hanging at the ceiling of cultivation rooms. As a result, it is likely that pesticides also prevail in the plantation atmosphere during and after cultivation. The risk of inhaling the latter pesticides increases when plants sprayed with pesticides are intensively manipulated during dismantling activities. We conclude that pesticides represent an underestimated and under-documented health risk for intervention staff. The standard procedure for dismantling illicit indoor cannabis cultivation sites should be improved by including guidelines for appropriate personal protection equipment and dismantling protocols that take into account all possible hazards.

European Radiation Dosimetry Group e.V. (EURADOS) survey on individual monitoring data and dose assessment has been carried out for 550 foreigners returning home after being exposed in Japan to intakes of radionuclides (mainly (131)I, (132)I, (132)Te, (134)Cs and (137)Cs) as a consequence of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP accident. In vivo and in vitro measurements were performed in their respective countries at an early stage after that accident. Intakes of radionuclides were detected in 208 persons from Europe and Canada, but the committed effective dose E(50) was below the annual dose limit for the public (<1 mSv) in all the cases. Lessons learned from this EURADOS survey are presented here regarding not only internal dosimetry issues, but also the management of the emergency situation, the perception of the risk of health effects due to radiation and the communication with exposed persons who showed anxiety and lack of trust in monitoring data and dose assessments.

In this research, influence of storage conditions on properties of oxidized cellulose was studied with respect to its haemostatic function. The aim was to examine changes of the properties of oxidized cellulose stored properly and that stored at laboratory conditions for 2 years. We studied surface morphology and chemical composition, as well as absorption of the simulated body fluid, behaviour in aqueous environment via potentiometric measurement of pH, and antimicrobial activity in vitro on the S. epidermidis bacteria. It was found out that the material properties of oxidized cellulose did not deteriorate. Higher absorption of simulated body fluid, lower pH in water and simulated body fluid represented positive changes with respect to the haemostatic function. Due to the acidic nature of the mate-rial, degraded oxidized cellulose preserved its antibacterial properties.
