Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects men from the age of 40 and its prevalence increases with age. Millions of men worldwide suffer from this disease, with many of them choosing an alternative treatment approach using phytotherapeutics, which are available in the form of registered preparations or food supplements. These preparations contain extracts that have been tested in clinical studies. Many of these studies have been critically evaluated by systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Recent data shows that saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) has a significant effect. Other drugs used in the treatment of BPH/LUTS include stinging nettle, lycopene, pumpkin, pygeum and rye pollen. However, the results of studies cannot be extrapolated to specific products unless proper extraction techniques, phytochemical analysis and dosage have been followed. The present paper aims to provide an overview of the latest knowledge in the field of BPH/LUTS phytotherapy with an emphasis on the clinical effect, side effects, interactions and rational dosage.
Mnohé z těchto studií byly kriticky vyhodnoceny systematickými review a metaanalýzami. Z dostupných dat plyne, že signifikantní efekt vykazuje serenoa plazivá (Serenoa repens). Mezi další drogy používané v terapii BHP/LUTS patří kopřiva dvoudomá, lykopen, slivoň africká, tykev obecná a žitný pyl. Nicméně výsledky studií nelze extrapolovat do konkrétních produktů, pokud u nich nebyly dodrženy správné extrakční techniky, fytochemické analýzy a dávkování. Tento příspěvek si klade za cíl přehled nejnovějších poznatků z oblasti fytoterapie BHP/LUTS s důrazem na klinický efekt, nežádoucí účinky, interakce a racionální dávkování.

The growing interest in foods that can be beneficial to human health is bringing into focus some products that have been used locally for centuries but have recently gained worldwide attention. One of these foods is pumpkin seed oil, which has been used in culinary and traditional medicine, but recent data also show its use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In addition, some sources refer to it as a potential functional food, mainly because it is obtained from pumpkin seeds, which contain many functional components. However, the production process of the oil may affect the content of these components and consequently the biological activity of the oil. In this review, we have focused on summarizing scientific data that explore the potential of pumpkin seed oil as a functional food ingredient. We provide a comprehensive overview of pumpkin seed oil chemical composition, phytochemical content, biological activity, and safety, as well as the overview of production processes and contemporary use. The main phytochemicals in pumpkin seed oil with health-related properties are polyphenols, phytoestrogens, and fatty acids, but carotenoids, squalene, tocopherols, and minerals may also contribute to health benefits. Most studies have been conducted in vitro and support the claim that pumpkin seed oil has antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Clinical studies have shown that pumpkin seed oil may be beneficial in the treatment of cardiovascular problems of menopausal women and ailments associated with imbalance of sex hormones.

In the present investigation Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (petals), Acorus calamus (rhizome), Moringa oleifera (leaves) and Cucurbita maxima (petals) were screened for their efficacy against osteosarcoma with elucidating a mechanism of their anticancer potentiality. The methanolic plant extracts revealed the presence of all major phytochemicals with quantitative analysis of flavonoids (98.15 ± 2.02 to 12.34 ± 0.57 mg of RUE/g) and total phenolics (26.40 ± 0.11 to 8.54 ± 0.10 mg of GAE/g). The antioxidant activity was assessed by standard DPPH, H2O2 scavenging, NO scavenging assays. The hemolysis, hemagglutination, and erythrocyte aggregation assays unveiled their compatibility with blood components. As most of the opportunistic microbes infect subsequently immunocompromised patients, the antimicrobial activity of the plant extracts showed a zone of inhibition (in mm) against nosocomial strains of Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Vibrio cholerae having MIC between 12.5–50 μg/ml. Through MTT assay the IC50 value was calculated against MG 63 osteosarcoma with detailed studies on DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation, revealing apoptosis being their primary mode of anticancer effect. Further the migration and colony forming assays supported the anticancer potentials of the methanolic plant extracts. The cell cycle analysis revealed that A. calamus and M. oleifera extracts were capable of arresting the growth of MG 63 osteosarcoma cells.
