The exact incidence of diseases of nasal mucosa is difficult to detect. Rhinitis and similar diseases are one of the most common type of self-healing diseases (only with the help of a pharmacist or a pharmaceutical assistant without the intervention of a practitioner or a specialist). In this text I summarize the common diseases of the nasal mucosa and outline the treatment by using medicine available in the Czech Republic.

[Therapy of acute upper respiratory tract infections]
Akutní respirační infekce horních cest dýchacích postihují děti i dospělé a pro svou četnost představují závažný nejen zdravotní, ale i socio-ekonomický problém. Hlavním cílem léčby u těchto infekcí je zmírnění příznaků, zkrácení trvání nemoci, zamezení komplikacím a zkrácení školní či pracovní absence. V následujícím stručném přehledu jsou uvedeny zejména skupiny léků, které jsou často doporučovány či předepisovány nemocným s akutními infekcemi horních dýchacích cest, se zřetelem na poznatky, které vycházejí z principů medicíny založené na důkazech.
Acute upper respiratory tract infections affect both children and adults and for their frequency represent a serious health andsocio-economic problem. The main goal of treatment for these infections is to alleviate symptoms, shorten the duration of illness,avoid complications, and reduce school or work absenteeism. The following brief overview lists the groups of drugs that are oftenrecommended or prescribed for patients with acute upper respiratory infections, with an emphasis on evidence-based medicine.

Následující přehled zánětů horních cest dýchacích se zabývá vznikem a příznaky onemocnění v praxi a jejich možnou léčbou. Léčba komplikací přesahuje rámec tohoto sdělení. V přehledu je podán popis nejčastěji užívaných skupin lokálně aplikovaných léčiv v ošetření nemocných s důrazem na léčbu symptomatickou – zejména možnosti aplikace lokálních léčiv v podobě sprejů a kapek.
The present overview of upper airway inflammations deals with the development and symptoms of the diseases in the practice and their possible treatment. The treatment of complications is beyond the scope of this paper. The most commonly used groups of locally administered medications are described which are used for the treatment of patients with an emphasis on symptomatic treatment, particularly the options of administering local medications in the form of sprays and drops.

Rinitida může vzniknout alergickými mechanismy (na základě atopie i bez atopického podkladu) i nealergickými mechanismy (v důsledku virové infekce, uvolněním histaminu působením některých složek bakterií, podrážděním senzorických nervových zakončení inhalací dráždivých látek). Typickými příznaky rinitidy jsou především zvýšená sekrece z nosu a obstrukce nosních průduchů (kongesce).
