The use of natural chelates to enhance risk element mobility combined with rhizofiltration by free floating macrophytes have not been thoroughly studied in recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of organic acids in soil by conducting flushing experiments to enhance the mobility of Cd, Pb, and Zn from soil to solution. In addition, the bioaccumulation of Cd, Pb, and Zn, in water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) will be studied as they affect the biomass in the rhizofiltration process. The results revealed that citric and tartaric acids mobilised the highest amount of all risk elements. In comparison to control, citric acid mobilised 71%, 181%, and 112% of Cd, Pb, and Zn while tartaric acid mobilised 70%, 155%, and 135% of Cd, Pb, and Zn respectively. The bioconcentration factor was approximately 2-5 times higher for juvenile plants than mature plants for all treatments as well as for both parts (leaves and roots). The risk element translocation into aerial parts decreased with increased time. Juvenile and mature plants proved a high accumulation potential and a 3 week growth period was observed as a sufficient time period to remove more than 80% of Cd, Pb, and Zn.

BACKGROUND: The calibration of Jaffe method for serum creatinine using one serum-based standard complemented with artificial matrix compensating standard's Jaffe-interfering substances allows two-point calibration with results well comparable with enzymatic methods. METHOD: Spectrophotometry was used. RESULTS: Jaffe procedures compensating serum/plasma intereferents by subtracting a constant amount of creatinine poorly overcompensate creatinine in children. Two-point calibration with a pair of primary serum standards certified by the reference measurement procedure (isotope-dilution, mass spectrometry) or with a pair of secondary standards linked to primary materials could provide results well agreeable with enzymatic determination. Such a calibration comprises an absorbance offset corresponding to other-than-creatinine Jaffe-interfering chromogens present in standards in the calibration line, while a two-point calibration combining one standard with physiological saline/water always grossly distorts calibration line. We calculated/prepared artificial serum matrices capable of compensating Jaffe-interfering chromogens in serum standards. The combination of even one standard with its artificial matrix also enables two-point calibration with practically the same results as with a pair of primary standards. CONCLUSIONS: A two-point calibration of Jaffe method for serum creatinine combining only one serum standard with creatinine solution matching standard's allow matrix-present interferents present results well comparable with enzymatic determination, providing the standard is attested/linked to the reference measurement procedure.

1. Osteoclasts and hairy cell leukemia spleen both contain large amounts of a band 5-tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TrACP). 2. We have recently purified to homogeneity a band 5 TrACP from human osteoclastomas and two isoforms of band 5 TrACP (5a and 5b) from the spleen of a patient with hairy cell leukemia. 3. Although the N-terminal amino acid sequences and the apparent molecular weights of the osteoclastoma, hairy cell leukemia spleen TrACPs were identical, there were several differences in the physical and biochemical properties between the three isoenzymes. 4. Based on these findings, it is concluded that these isoenzymes are different enzymes, but that they could have originated from a similar ancestral gene. 5. It is proposed that the osteoclastoma and hairy cell leukemia band 5 TrACPs are members of a multigene family.

Fourteen of 21 strains isolated from stools, urine specimens and the hospital environment were identified as Kluyvera. All of these 14 strains corresponded with the literary description of the genus Kluyvera and were identical with two reference strains except that one of them failed to utilize sodium acetate within 7 days. One strain (No. 23441) produced massive growth on Jordan's tartrate, which some Kluyvera do. Important in differentiating indole- and Simmons' citrate-negative Kluyvera strains from Escherichia vulneris (two other of our 21 strains) is negative ornithin decarboxylase and negative Christensen citrate in the latter. Three strains were identified as Citrobacter, where especially indole-positive and urease-negative strains may be reminiscent of Kluyvera. An aberrant strain, No. 25115, which alone failed to grow at 42 degrees C and by some characters differed from Kluyvera, E. vulneris and Enteric Group 10, was identified as E. coli.
