The article deals with the possible influence of an extremely low-frequency magnetic field on cellular structures. The work is carried out to verify the change of growth dynamics of exposed samples by application of a time-varying magnetic field, with a specified action value of magnetic flux density, valid in the European Union. The frequency of applied field was preliminarily confirmed as biologically active, under conditions for Ion Parametric Resonance theory, in experimental work focused on targeting Ca2+ ions bound in specific positions on cellular membranes of eukaryotic cells. In thirty experiments, the authors use the dynamics of growth over a time horizon of eight hours to elucidate the effect of the field on the proliferation activity of the cells. Since living beings are exposed to similar electromagnetic fields daily, the presented article shed some light on whether, or not the irradiation has brought a statistically significant effect under conditions specified in ICNIRP guidelines and recommendations.

In many in vitro experiments studying ultrasound bioeffects the sonicated samples are placed to far field with intention of exposing them to as uniform ultrasound field as possible. The main aim of this work is to assess whether the sonicated samples really experience what they are believed to. Also we would like to suggest basic rules for construction of sonication vessels. We used 3.5 MHz and 7 MHz ultrasound transducers for measurements. We measured ultrasound field inside and behind common culture plates and special 3D printed plates placed to last axial maximum in water sonication tank with use of a needle hydrophone. Our results show that even though the sonication vessels with sonicated samples are placed into far field, the sonicated samples are actually exposed to some kind of a near field pattern which develops due to the interaction between ultrasound and well of culture plate. The variability of local acoustic intensity can reach up to several hundreds of percent. Our results are also supported by theoretical calculation and software for simulation of ultrasound fields. Even though the sonicated samples may have actually been exposed to some kind of near field pattern in many past studies, the whole phenomenon of creation of near field pattern can be controlled to some extent for future studies. Thus, we suggest that the sonication vessel should always be designed for particular ultrasound transducer.

Mechanisms of how electromagnetic (EM) field acts on biological systems are governed by the same physics regardless of the origin of the EM field (technological, atmospheric...), given that EM parameters are the same. We draw from a large body of literature of bioeffects of a man-made electromagnetic field. In this paper, we performed a focused review on selected possible mechanisms of how atmospheric electromagnetic phenomena can act at the molecular and cellular level. We first briefly review the range of frequencies and field strengths for both electric and magnetic fields in the atmosphere. Then, we focused on a concise description of the current knowledge on weak electric and magnetic field bioeffects with possible molecular mechanisms at the basis of possible EM field bioeffects combined with modeling strategies to estimate reliable outcomes and speculate about the biological effects linked to lightning or pyroelectricity. Indeed, we bring pyroelectricity as a natural source of voltage gradients previously unexplored. While very different from lightning, it can result in similar bioeffects based on similar mechanisms, which can lead to close speculations on the importance of these atmospheric electric fields in the evolution.

The cell, as a fundamental structural, functional and biological unit, plays an essential role in living organisms. Analysis of the molecular/elemental composition of a single cell is a significant aspect of lipidomic, proteomic, metabolomic and metallomic studies aiming at understanding molecular processes in cells. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a powerful technique which can help to elucidate the bioeffects of trace metals and their species on cellular metabolism and cell behavior. Numerous ICP-MS-based methods have already been utilized to explore elemental/species profiles. These include, e.g. time-resolved ICP-MS, electrothermal vaporization ICP-MS, laser ablation ICP-MS, chip-based microextraction techniques, HPLC/CE-ICP-MS, elemental tagging, and mass cytometry. All these methods are covered in this short review.
