Corimalia strejceki Schön& Skuhrovec,sp. nov. is described and illustrated from the Caucasus, Russia. The new species is compared with the allopatric C. aliena (Faust, 1890) differing in size, shape of scales, scale patch close to the scutellum, size of mucrones on the meso- and metatibiae, and also shape of the apex of the penis. Controversy over the number of segments in the antennae in the genus Corimalia is summarized. An annotated catalogue and key of all Corimaliini species in the Caucasus is provided.

Georgia (or Sakartvelo in its own language) is a South Caucasus Mts. country with its easternmost part is enigmatically named Iberia, like the Iberian Peninsula, which may refer to rivers "Kura" and "Ebro" or their valleys respectively. Most of their inhabitants speak Georgian which is included within Dene-Caucasian group and Usko-Mediterranean subgroup of languages. The latter includes Basque, Berber, ancient Iberian-Tartessian, Etruscan, Hittite, Minoan Lineal A and others. In the present paper, HLA class II -DRB1 and -DQB1 alleles has been studied and extended haplotypes calculated. Most frequent haplotypes are also of Mediterranean origin (i. e.: (A*02-B*51)-DRB1*11:01-DQB1*03:01, (A*02-B*51)-DRB1*13:01-DQB1*06:03, or (A*24-B*35)-DRB1*01:01-DQB1*05:01) and DA genetic distances show that closest world populations to Georgians are Mediterraneans. Georgians also show common extended haplotypes ((A*02-B*51)-DRB1*11:01-DQB1*03:01, (A*02-B*13)-DRB1*07:01-DQB1*02:01 and (A*03-B*35)-DRB1*11:01-DQB1*03:01) with Svan people, a secluded population in North Georgia mountains. We can conclude that Georgians belong to a very old Mediterranean substratum according to both linguistics (Usko Mediterranean languages) and HLA genetics.

The specialization of parasitic plants from the Orobanchaceae family to the heterotrophic lifestyle caused several morphological, physiological and molecular changes. One of the adaptations to the parasitic lifestyle is the production of a large number of the smallest seeds in world flora, also called "dust-seeds". Seeds of 34 holoparasitic species from the Cistanche, Orobanche, Phelipanche, and Phelypaea genera were collected in the Caucasus region (54 samples) and their fatty acid content and compositions analysed. Of these seeds, 28 were investigated for the first time, and 12 are endemic to the Caucasus (one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the world). The influence of different hosts, populations, habitats, and climatic conditions on the fatty acid content and composition, as well as some connections of taxonomic classification are discussed. The fatty acid content in the species varied between 0.9 and 42.5%, and showed quantitative differences at generic and infrageneric levels, while displaying uniform fatty acid composition. Thirteen fatty acids were identified, of which nine were undescribed for Orobanchaceae. The fatty acid composition of the Orobanchaceae seeds represented a mixture of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) (average 7.8%) and unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) (average 92.2%). The fatty acid content in the Orobanchaceae seeds was directly unrelated to taxonomy, while the n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio supported the clear separation of the Orobanche and Phelipanche genera. Orobanchaceae seeds contained mainly linoleic and oleic acids, thus they could be a potential nutritional source of the unsaturated fatty acids. Additionally, the studies confirmed the hypothesis that the degree of seed oil fatty acid unsaturation increased in colder climatic conditions, especially for the Orobanche genus.
The first representative of the subgenus Helvetoraeticus Bauernfeind & Soldán, 2012, from the Caucasus Mountains, Ecdyonurus (Helvetoraeticus) adjaricus sp. nov., is described on the basis of larvae, female imago (reared from larva) and male imago from the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Georgia. The male imago of the new species can be separated from other representatives of Helvetoraeticus by its conspicuous yellowish wings coloration (especially of hind wings) and the shape of the penis lobes. The larva has a distinctive broad and apically pointed lateral projection on the pronotum, pointed bristles on the ventral side of the posterior border of the femora and markedly long, sharp posterolateral expansions of abdominal sterna. This last character is unique within Helvetoraeticus. The new species is most closely related to E. krueperi (Stein, 1863).

Wild hops (Humulus lupulus L.) are potential new germplasms to expand the variability of genetic resources for hop breeding. We evaluated Canadian (62 plants) and Caucasian (58 plants) wild hops by their chemical characteristics and with molecular genetic analyses using sequence-tagged site and simple sequence repeat markers, in comparison with European (104 plants) and North American (27 plants) wild hops. The contents of alpha and beta acids varied from 0.36% to 5.11% and from 0.43% to 6.66% in Canadian wild hops, and from 0.85% to 3.65% and from 1.22% to 4.81% in Caucasian wild hops, respectively. The contents of cohumulone and colupulone distinctly differed between European and North American wild hops: the cohumulone level in alpha acids was in the range 46.1%-68.4% among North American wild hops and in the range 13.6%-30.6% among European wild hops. The high content of myrcene and the low contents of humulene, farnesene, and selinenes were typical for wild hops from Canada, in contrast to wild hops from the Caucasus region. We compared the chemical characteristics with molecular genetic data. Chemical characteristics differentiated wild hops into North American and Eurasian groups. Molecular genetic analysis was able to separate Caucasian wild hops from European wild hops. We proved a hop phylogeny by means of wide molecular analysis.

The subgenus Cladoconnus Reitter, 1909 of the megadiverse genus Euconnus Thomson, 1859 is redescribed and revised for the Balkan Peninsula, Turkey and Caucasus. The following species are described: Euconnus (Cladoconnus) gagranicus sp. nov., E. (C.) ispartaensis sp. nov., E. (C.) meybohmi sp. nov., E. (C.) brachati sp. nov. and E. (C.) croaticus sp. nov. Lectotypes are designated for E. (C.) anatolicus Franz, 1997, E. (C.) dodecanicus Franz, 1966, E. (C.) robustus Reitter, 1882 and E. (C.) winneguthi Apfelbeck, 1907. Euconnus (Cladoconnus) major (Motschulsky, 1851) is placed as a junior synonym of E. (C.) motschulskii (Motschulsky, 1837). Two species groups, schlosseri and denticornis are defined; identification keys to the groups and species are given.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF; OMIM #219700) is a common autosomal recessive disease caused by pathogenic variants (henceforward mutations) in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene (CFTR). The spectrum and frequencies of CFTR mutations vary among different populations. Characterization of the specific distribution of CFTR mutations can be used to optimize genetic counseling, foster reproductive choices, and facilitate the introduction of mutation-specific therapies. Chechens are a distinct Caucasian ethnic group of the Nakh peoples that originated from the North Caucasus. Chechens are one of the oldest ethnic groups in the Caucasus, the sixth largest ethnic group in the Russian Federation (RF), and constitute the majority population of the Chechen Republic (Chechnya). The spectrum of CFTR mutations in a representative cohort of Chechen CF patients and healthy individuals was analyzed. METHODS: Molecular genetic analysis of 34 CFTR mutations (representing approx. 80-85% of mutations in multiethnic CF populations of the RF) was performed in 32 CF patients from 31 unrelated Chechen families living in Chechnya. One hundred randomly chosen healthy Chechens were analyzed for the 15 most common "Russian" mutations. The clinical symptoms in Chechen CF patients with different CFTR genotypes were investigated. RESULTS: High frequencies of c.1545_1546delTA (p.Tyr515X; 1677delTA) (52 out of 64 CFTR alleles tested; 81.3%) and c.274G > A (p.Glu92Lys, E92K) (8/64, 12.5%) mutations were found. Twenty patients were homozygous for the c.1545_1546delTA mutation, and eight were compound heterozygous for the c.1545_1546delTA and c.274G > A mutations. Three carriers of the c.1545_1546delTA mutation were also found in the cohort of 100 apparently healthy Chechens (frequency - 0.015). The c.1545_1546delTA and c.274G > A mutations are linked to the same haplotype (22-7-16-13) of intragenic Short Tandem Repeat markers, i.e., IVS1CA, IVS6aGATT, IVS8CA, and IVS17bCA. CONCLUSIONS: The distribution of CFTR mutations in the Chechen CF population is unique regarding the high frequency of mutations c.1545_1546delTA and c.274G > A (more than 90% of the mutant alleles). The c.274G > A mutation is associated with a less severe course of CF than that observed in c.1545_1546delTA homozygotes. Testing for these two variants can be proposed as the first step of CF DNA diagnosis in the Chechen population.

The new species Epeorus (Caucasiron) bicolliculatus sp. nov. is described based on larvae and adults. Diagnostic characters are given with regard to the related species. The most pronounced difference is represented by protuberances on larval abdominal terga II-IX, present exclusively in E. (C.) bicolliculatus sp. nov. Primary data on the biology and distribution of the new species are also provided. Delimitation of the new species is verified by the analysis of COI (barcode) sequences. Barcode data for all Caucasian species of the subgenus Caucasiron are provided for the first time and compared with E. (C.) bicolliculatus sp. nov.
