OBJECTIVES: The newborn screening (NBS) program in the Republic of Serbia has several decades of tradition, but it has not included any organic acidemias (OA). Therefore, this study aimed to establish the cut-offs of the corresponding NBS markers in the population of healthy newborns. METHODS: In dried blood samples (DBS) collected from 1,771 healthy newborns, we analyzed levels of propionylcarnitine (C3), isovalerylcarnitine (C5), and glutarylcarnitine (C5DC) using tandem mass spectrometry. Further we calculated the following ratios: C3/acetylcarnitine (C3/C2), C3/palmitoylcarnitine (C3/C16), C5/ free carnitine (C0), C5/C2, C5/C3, C5DC/octanoylcarnitine (C8), and C5DC/C0. RESULTS: The cut-offs for methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) or propionic acidemia (PA) were C3>5.73 μmol/L, C3/C2>0.23, and C3/C16>2.36. Based on the study findings, the screening results indicative for isovaleric acidemia (IVA) would include C5>0.372 μmol/L, C5/C0>0.020, C5/C2>0.019, and C5/C3>0.31. Finally, C5DC>0.303 μmol/L, C5DC/C8>7.1, and C5DC/C0>0.019 would justify further testing for glutaric acidemia type I (GA1). The cut-offs were satisfactorily validated via the comparison with worldwide estimates and data for several Caucasian populations. CONCLUSIONS: The levels of the OA biomarkers in the Serbian population of healthy newborns have a distribution pattern similar to the other world populations. Therefore, the proposed cut-offs represent a reliable starting point for the future development of the OA NBS.

AIMS: The objective of the present substudy was to examine whether aspirin poor/high responsiveness (APR/AHR) is associated with increased rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and serious bleeding after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). METHODS: We analyzed 961 consecutive ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction patients who underwent PPCI between February 2008 and June 2011. Multiplate analyser (Dynabite, Munich, Germany) was used for the assessment of platelet reactivity. APR/AHR were defined as the upper/lower quintiles of ASPI values, determined 24 h after aspirin loading. APR patients were tailored using 300 mg maintenance dose for 30 days. The co-primary end points at 30 days were: MACE (death, non-fatal infarction, ischemia-driven target vessel revascularization and ischemic stroke) and serious bleeding according to the BARC classification. RESULTS: One hundred and 90 patients were classified as APR, and 193 patients as AHR. At admission, compared with aspirin sensitive patients (ASP), patients with APR had more frequently diabetes, anterior infarction and heart failure, while AHR patients had reduced values of creatine kinase, leukocytes, heart rate and systolic blood pressure. Compared with ASP, the rates of 30-day primary end points did not differ neither in APR group including tailored patients (MACE, adjusted OR 1.02, 95%CI 0.47-2.17; serious bleeding, adjusted OR 1.92, 95%CI 0.79-4.63), nor in patients with AHR (MACE, adjusted OR 1.58, 95%CI 0.71-5.51; serious bleeding, adjusted OR 0.69, 95%CI 0.22-2.12). CONCLUSIONS: The majority of APR patients were suitable for tailoring. Neither APR including tailored patients nor AHR were associated with adverse 30-day efficacy or safety clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Mesiodens is the most common form of supernumerary tooth mainly located between the maxillary central incisors. Its etiology is not completely understood but both genetic and environmental factors are assumed. The degree of mineralization and inorganic element content in hard tooth tissues is poorly understood as well as is the durability and suitability for allo- and auto-transplantation. Therefore aim of this study was to examine the content of inorganic elements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 26 mesiodens teeth and 26 normal central incisor teeth as controls. All specimens were prepared for SEM/EDS analysis which was aimed at specific sites on the enamel, dentine and cementum in order to evaluate the weight percentage and ratio of important inorganic elements. RESULTS: and Conclusion. The results showed that there was a difference in the weight percentage of selected inorganic elements (calcium, phosphorus, oxygen, carbon, magnesium and sodium) in all three types of dental hard tissues but the differences were mostly expressed in the cementum tissue. The statistical analysis showed that the differences were marginally significant especially for calcium and phosphorus values and ratio in the enamel and dentine. The carbon and magnesium content in all three hard tissues showed the most differences, but overall, the hard tissues mineral content of the mesiodens did not differs significantly from healthy teeth.
