OBJECTIVE: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a treatment method commonly used in physiotherapy for musculoskeletal disorders. The aim of this study was to monitor the function of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and surrounding tissues and compare the objective measurements of the effect of LLLT. BACKGROUND DATA: LLLT has been considered effective in reducing pain and muscular tension; thus improving the quality of patients' lives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: TMJ function was evaluated by cephalometric tracing analysis, orthopantomogram, TMJ tomogram, and computer face-bow record. Interalveolar space between central incisors before and after therapy was measured. Patients evaluated pain on the Visual Analog Scale. LLLT was performed in five treatment sessions (energy density of 15.4 J/cm(2)) by semiconductive GaAlAs laser with an output of 280 mW, emitting radiation wavelength of 830 mm. The laser supplied a spot of ~0.2 cm(2). RESULTS: Baseline comparisons between the healthy patients and patients with low-level laser application show that TMJ pain during function is based on anatomical and function changes in TMJ areas. Significant differences were seen in the posterior and anterior face height. The results comparing healthy and impaired TMJ sagittal condyle paths showed that patients with TMJ pain during function had significantly flatter nonanatomical movement during function. After therapy, the unpleasant feeling was reduced from 27.5 to 4.16 on the pain Visual Analog Scale. The pain had reduced the ability to open the mouth from 34 to 42 mm. CONCLUSIONS: The laser therapy was effective in the improvement of the range of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and promoted a significant reduction of pain symptoms.

The purpose of this study was to establish floating cephalometric norms for the description of the individual skeletal pattern in Czech adults. Floating norms provide a method of analysis that uses the variability of the associations among suitable cephalometric measures, on the basis of the regression model combining both sagittal and vertical skeletal parameters. Harmony box is a simple and useful tool for diagnostics of orthodontic anomalies according to individual cephalometric norms. 118 subjects, 53 male and 65 female, from Czech population were selected. The method of multiple regression analysis was used to determine interdependence among five cephalometric variables of the sample. Linear regression equations with corresponding r2 and standard error of the estimate (SE) were then illustrated as the harmony box. The results construct a harmony box based on correlated cephalometric variables. The multiple regression analysis of the data is graphically illustrated as a harmony schema which divides harmony box in three zones according to the type of the face - prognathic, orthognathic and retrognathic. The cephalometric floating norms describing the individual craniofacial pattern among Czech adults were established based on five correlated variables in the form of a harmony box.

Cephalometric x-ray image analysis is excellent tool for diagnosis a treatment planning in orthodontics, prosthodontics and maxillofacial surgery. Segner-Hasund harmony box describes facial skeleton in complex and evaluates single cephalometric measurements from the point of view of measurements correlation. Three case reports demonstrate using Segner-Hasund harmony box in practice.

Materiál a metoda: Vzorek populační skupiny do naší studie byl vybrán z pacientů Dětské stomatologické kliniky FN Motol a Ortodontického oddělení FN Motol. 21 mužů a 70 žen.
Objective: Term standard cephalometric values mean average value of cephalometric measurements which includes standard deviation. This is not an absolute number but the range of values, which were obtained by measuring the defined sample of the population. Material and Methods: The sample of the population in our study group was selected from patients of Charles University, 2nd Medical Faculty, and Department of Orthodontics. Selection criteria were: Class I occlusion, balanced facial profile, no previous orthodontic treatment, absence of denture, including dental implants. From the homogeneity point of view the probands were born in Czech Republic and belong to Caucasian population. 91 patients were evaluated (age range was from 18 to 45 years; 21 men and 70 women) in computer program – Dolphin imaging using McLaughlin cephalometric analysis. Results: The results showed that our patients are in Class I but position of lower frontal teeth is similar to compensatory mechanisms of Class II patients.

The technique of lateral cephalometric radiography has become widely used as a descriptive, analytical, and diagnostic tool in clinical orthodontics and prosthodontics. The application of numbers to the radiographic images readily gives the impression of mathematical accuracy. The purpose of study was to established sex-specific normative data for Czech patients in Prague. The 88 subjects (55 male and 33 female) were included in the study. 20 different measurements (computer analysis Kefalo 4.07) were used as determinates of the skeletal sagital jaw relationship. The subjects were divided into groups based on gender. Differences of mean values were tested using statistical tests. The data were compared with 12 different Caucasian European and American measurements. The statistical significant difference between European standard and Czech subjects was not found. Our findings support hypothesis that cephalometric norms are based on racial, age but not sex difference. Anterior and posterior facial heights were reduced due to less sufficient therapy.
