This study investigated formation of protective deposits on the enamel surface after application of several anti-erosive toothpastes with different active ingredients. NaF-containing Sensodyne Pronamel, SnCl2 /F-based Elmex Erosion Protection and calcium phosphate-based BioRepair Plus Sensitivity Control, SensiShield and Enamel Care toothpastes with claimed anti-erosive properties were tested. Artificial saliva and Elmex Erosion Protection mouth rinse served as control groups. The toothpastes were applied 30 times by a toothbrush for 2 min per day, mouth rinse for 30 s on polished enamel of thirty five human molars (n = 5) with series of five rhomboid-shaped indents of various length prepared by a Knoop indentor. After 15 and 30 applications, the shape of the indents and surface morphology was characterised using light and scanning electron microscopy. At the end of treatment, the samples were exposed to 0.2 wt. % citric acid (pH 3.30) to test resistance of the treated enamel to erosion. Pronounced differences were observed between protective properties of the toothpastes. While Sensodyne Pronamel and BioRepair Plus Sensitivity Control did not produce any protective deposits, Enamel Care formed a compact layer of deposits which protected the enamel surface against erosion. With Elmex Erosion Protection and SensiShield fractured indent edges and scratches on the treated enamel suggested that their abrasive properties prevailed over ability of active ingredients to form deposits. These results revealed that toothpastes with strong potential to form acid-resistant deposits on the enamel surface and of low abrasivity should be used for effective prevention of enamel erosion. PURPOSE: This double blind randomized clinical trial was conducted with the purpose of evaluating the effects of Nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste as compared to 8% Arginine containing toothpaste in the management of Dentin hypersensitivity (DH). METHOD AND MATERIALS: Patients (30 in each group) suffering from DH and eliciting a VAS score higher than 2 in air blast and tactile test were randomly allocated (block randomization) into either a group 1 (arginine toothpaste) or group 2 (nHA toothpaste). The primary outcome evaluated was the reduction of DH as measured by the electrical stimulus reading on the digital pulp tester. Current required for eliciting a VAS score of 2 was recorded before application of dentifrice. 1 cm of toothpaste was then expressed on the tooth surface for two minutes in each group and rinsed off. The electrical stimulus required to elicit a VAS score of 2 was recorded after 5 minutes, 1 week and 4 weeks. RESULTS: The desensitizing paste containing arginine provided a statistically significant reduction in DH and so did the paste containing nHA. Mean increase in amperage value (reduction in DH) was higher for nHA based than the arginine containing dentifrice. This difference was not statistically significant showing that both toothpastes are equally effective. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present study encourage the use of Nano-hydroxyapatite and arginine containing dentifrice as an effective desensitizing agent providing relief from symptoms 5 minutes after application and after 1 and 4 weeks.

Studie zkoumala účinek kombinovaného používání zubní pasty a ústní vody s obsahem aminfluoridu na výskyt bílých skvrn, na stupeň zánětu dásní (gingivitidy) a množstvíplaku u pacientů léčených fixními aparáty. Výsledky potvrzují pozitivní účinek aminfluoridu u pacientů s fixním aparátem. Aminfluoridy zpomalují rozvoj gingivitidy a snižují výskyt bílých demineralizačních lézí, čímž přispívají k estetickému výsledku léčby. Nedokážou však úplně zabránit negativním projevům ortodontické léčby, stále je třeba klást největší důraz na mechanickké odstraňovaní zubního plaku.
The study focused on the effects of the combined use of a toothpaste and mouth-rinse with aminfluoride on the incidence of white spots, on the degree of gingivitis, and on the amount of plaque in patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances. The results proved positive effects of aminfluorides. Aminfluorides slow the development of gingivitis, and reduce the occurrence of white demineralized lesions, and thus contribute to the esthetic results of the therapy. However, they cannot prevent the negative effects of orthodontic treatment. The emphasis should be still put on the mechanical removal of plaque.
