The aim of the study was to assess recent changes in lung cancer incidence and mortality trends in the male and female population in Southeastern Serbia, in the period 1999-2008. Data used for analyses were provided by the Cancer Registry of the Institute for Public Health, Nis. Incidence and mortality trends were based on crude and age-standardized incidence and mortality rates for the period 1999-2008. Standardized rates were calculated by the direct method of standardization (per 100,000), using the world population as the standard. Statistical significance was checked on the basis of correlation coefficient (r) for probability (p) on the level of 0.05. A total of 3,128 new cases and 2,327 deaths from lung cancer were registered (males/females ratio is 4:1). In males, the crude (107.94) and the age-standardized incidence rate (59.88) were four-fold higher than in females (27.10 and 14.21). In males, the crude mortality rate was four-fold higher than in females (80.61 vs. 19.87), while the age-standardized mortality rate was four and a half higher than in females (43.78 vs. 9.54). Lung cancer incidence trend, based on crude and age-standardized incidence rates, in females was increasing while in males was decreasing. Lung cancer mortality trends, based on crude and age-standardized incidence rates, were increasing in both sexes. Registration of unfavourable incidence and mortality trends of lung cancer indicate failure in primary and secondary prevention in the past. It is thus of vital importance to provide much intensive and comprehensive activities for primary and secondary prevention of lung cancer in the future, including education and rigorous tobacco control as well.

The main objective of this study was to apply a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method to investigate the presence of 20 mycotoxins in 204 maize samples harvested in Northern Serbia in the period 2012-2015, including seasons with extreme drought (2012), hot and dry conditions (2013 and 2015) and extreme precipitation (2014). Between 2 and 20 mycotoxins contaminated examined samples. In samples collected from each year, all of six examined fumonisins were detected with very high prevalence (from 76% to 100%). Aflatoxin B1 was detected in 94% and 90% maize samples from 2012 and 2015, respectively. In samples from year 2014, deoxynivalenol, zearalenone and its derivatives were detected in 100% of samples. Furthermore, ochratoxin A (25%) was the most predominant in samples from 2012. The obtained results indicate that changes in weather conditions, recorded in the period of four years, had significant influence on the occurrence of examined mycotoxins in maize.

OBJECTIVES: Seasonal fluctuations in mortality are associated with age, outdoor temperature, influenza, health care provision, lifestyle risk factors and economic factors. In the Republic of Serbia almost one half of the Roma population lives in poverty and their housing conditions are very poor. The aim of this paper is to describe and compare excess winter mortality (EWM) in Roma and non-Roma population in Serbia from 1992 to 2007. METHODS: Using the national mortality database, this study compares EWM index and rates in Roma and general populations in Serbia. Mean winter temperature and ethnicity are analysed against the results for relative EWM by multiple linear regression adjusted for age. RESULTS: Frequency analysis showed that Roma population had significantly higher EWM rate per 10,000 (129.2 vs. 76.6) for all causes, all respiratory diseases (26.5 vs. 8.0), and chronic lower respiratory diseases (23.0 vs. 5.2) in comparison to non-Roma population. Influenza and pneumonia related deaths represented a small proportion of EWM in both populations. Cardiovascular EWM rate was slightly higher among non-Roma population. Regression analysis demonstrates that Roma ethnicity was associated with significant increase of respiratory EWM rate (regression coefficient (B) = 1.49; 95% CI: 0.45-2.54). There was no relationship between ethnicity and cardiovascular and all causes EWM rates. CONCLUSIONS: Although both Roma and non-Roma populations in Serbia suffer from very high rates of excess winter mortality, Roma are significantly more vulnerable. EWM rate from chronic lower respiratory diseases is more than four times higher among Roma people and suggests that they represent one of the most important health problems in Roma population in Serbia.

Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae are causative agents of the porcine respiratory disease complex. However, information on the prevalence of these pathogens in wild boars is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the presence of antibodies to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae in wild boars in Serbia. In this study 253 serum samples from wild boars were tested for antibodies to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia using the ELISA assay. The overall seroprevalence rates of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae were 4.2% and 56.9%, respectively. Antibodies to both pathogens were detected in 20 sera samples (7.9%). The prevalence of wild boars that were seropositive for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae differed with age and ranged from 10.7% to 33.3%, and for Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, it ranged from 51.8% to 83.3%. Wild boars are hard to control and are considered a high-risk infection source for outdoor and backyard pigs and eventually for commercial indoor farms as well. Thus, the result of this first serosurvey in Serbia should raise awareness of the importance of wild boars as potential reservoirs of bacterial pathogens such as Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Our data revealed the circulation of both pathogens in wild boars in Serbia, drawing attention to the potential health risk they present for domestic swine health.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to estimate the seroprevalence of HIV infection among TB patients, knowledge, self-perceived risks and testing practices related to HIV. METHODS: We performed cross-sectional study from 10 May to 15 July 2011. Cluster sampling method was used to select 27 hospitals where 289 TB patients were consecutively recruited. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression methods were used to identify the factors associated with correct comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS. RESULTS: HIV prevalence among TB patients was 0.3%. Only 25.2% of the respondents presented comprehensive correct knowledge of HIV/AIDS. The percentage of correct answers to all questions related to knowledge about HIV/AIDS increases with educational status (χ2 = 5.42; p < 0.05) and decreases with the age of respondents (χ2 = 8.53; p > 0.05). The independent predictors of correct comprehensive knowledge were living without partner (OR = 4.45; CI = 1.59-12.95) and self-awareness of HIV risk (OR = 4.43; CI = 1.20-16.52). CONCLUSION: HIV prevalence among TB patients is higher than among general population in Serbia. The level of comprehensive correct knowledge of HIV/AIDS is low. There is a need for continuous implementation of public health strategy to successfully manage HIV and HIV/TB co-infection in Serbia.

Serbia was a country endemic for leishmaniasis with rich and abundant sand fly fauna during the middle of the 20th century. After 1968, the disease was considered as eradicated, and as a consequence, all research on vectors and pathogens was neglected. The recent detection of Leishmania infantum in sand flies and confirmed cases of leishmaniasis in humans and dogs indicated the risk of re-emergence in Serbia. Also, for millions of refugees/immigrants, Serbia is a transit route between East-Mediterranean and Middle-East countries, and Central/North Europe, and it is under constant risk of vector and disease introduction. Primary objectives of this research were to determine which sand fly species are present around transit routes, whether they include vectors of the Leishmania spp. moreover, is/are Leishmania spp. present in the vectors. Surveys were conducted at 55 locations, organised in four clusters, which covered main immigrant routes and shelters/camps as well as tourist/trade transit routes. In total, 367 sand fly specimens were collected. Nine species were identified: Phlebotomus papatasi, P. perfiliewi, P. tobbi, P. neglectus, P. sergenti, P. alexandri, P. simici, P. balcanicus and P. mascittii. Detection of P. alexandri represents the first record in Serbia. The diversity of sand fly species increased while the number of collected specimens per night decreased during the period of research neglection. Phlebotomus neglectus, a proven vector of L. infantum, was a predominant species in all surveyed clusters, and in 56,52% of locations, it was the only species present. Although all detected species are regarded either as proven or suspected vectors of Leishmania spp., screening of females for Leishmania presence resulted negative. Our study provides insight into the significant changes of sand fly fauna in Serbia during the end of XX and beginning of XXI century. Diverse sand fly fauna in Serbia suggests that the establishment of new leishmaniasis foci is possible.

The paper analyses Political Budget Cycles in the context of a young post-communist democracy, Serbia. The authors deploy well-established methodological (time series) approaches to examine the general government budget balance (fiscal deficit) in conjunction with elections. The findings suggest that there is clear evidence of higher fiscal deficit prior to elections-however, this is the case only for regular (scheduled) elections and not so for snap (early called) elections. The paper contributes to the PBC literature by revealing different incumbent behaviour in regular versus early elections, thus highlighting the importance of distinguishing between these types of elections in the domain of PBC research.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to determine the trend and methods of violent deaths (suicide and homicide) in adolescents aged 15-19 years in Serbia. METHODS: Mortality database was drawn from the Statistical Office of Serbia from the 1997-2019 period. To calculate the annual percentage change (APC) of mortality rate (MR) with corresponding 95% confidence interval we used join point regression analysis. Statistical analyses were also performed using the chi-square test and Spearman's rho correlation. RESULTS: The average suicide rate was 3.65 per 100,000 and homicide rate was 1.36 per 100,000 adolescents. The boys to girls ratio was 4.2 for suicides and 2.7 for homicides. Among girls, suicide rate significantly decreased (APC -20.7%; 95% CI -32.5 to -6.8) and homicide rate insignificantly decreased (APC -19.3%; 95% CI -37.8 to 5.1). Among boys, suicide rate significantly decreased (APC -4.6%; 95% CI -7.0 to -2.0) as well as homicide rate (APC -7.7%; 95% CI -11.5 to -4.3). The most common method of suicide was hanging (195, 44.3%) and nearly one third (198, 32.6%) of violent deaths were caused by firearms. Significantly negative correlation was observed between the Human Development Index (HDI), gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and MR due to suicides and homicides among both genders (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Increase of GDP and HDI, national preventive intervention and strict application of the provisions of the law regarding the possession and storage of weapons must be implemented in order to continue reducing violent deaths among adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality among women in Serbia and accounts for 22.8% of total cancer mortality in 2018. This study assessed the knowledge and barriers to early detection of breast cancer in women. METHODS: In March 2019, at the Primary Healthcare Centre Kikinda, Serbia, a 22-item questionnaire was distributed to a series of patients (N = 403, response rate 91.8%) to assess the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) between variables explaining knowledge of breast cancer symptoms and risk factors and barriers to screening, and four types of early detection of breast cancer. RESULTS: The majority of patients (85.4%) know that a lump in a breast is a common symptom of breast cancer and that a family history of breast cancer is a risk factor (80.1%); 63.8% of respondents aged ≥ 30 years self-examined their breasts in the past month, 39.1% of patients aged ≥ 40 years had clinical, while 34.4% had ultrasound breast examination in the past year, and 51.1% of patients aged ≥ 50 years had mammography once in the past two years. Patients aged ≥ 40 years retired and those with a positive family history were 84% and 63% less likely not to undergo a clinical breast examination in the past year. Participants over 40 years of age who reported a lack of funds were 2.46 times more likely to miss a clinical breast examination than those who did not have that barrier. Among participants aged 50-69 years, the likelihood of not receiving the mammography increases by 2.82 with an increase in wealth status and it was 65% lower for those who lack information about the available treatment. CONCLUSION: Women under the age of 50 rarely practice breast cancer screening. Study findings can be used to improve breast cancer screening at the primary level.

The main objective of this study was to screen, for the first time, the natural occurrence of non-regulated fungal metabolites in 204 maize samples harvested in Serbia in maize growing seasons with extreme drought (2012), extreme precipitation and flood (2014) and moderate drought conditions (2013 and 2015). In total, 109 non-regulated fungal metabolites were detected in examined samples, whereby each sample was contaminated between 13 and 55 non-regulated fungal metabolites. Moniliformin and beauvericin occurred in all samples collected from each year. In samples from year 2012, oxaline, questiomycin A, cyclo (l-Pro-l-Val), cyclo (l-Pro-l-Tyr), bikaverin, kojic acid and 3-nitropropionic acid were the most predominant (98.0-100%). All samples from 2014 were contaminated with 7-hydroxypestalotin, 15-hydroxyculmorin, culmorin, butenolid and aurofusarin. Bikaverin and oxaline were quantified in 100% samples from 2013 and 2015, while 3-nitropropionic acid additionally occurred in 100% samples from 2015.
