The yellow-green alga Trachydiscus minutus (class Xanthophyta) was cultivated in a standard medium and in media without sulfur and nitrogen. Its yield after a 16-d cultivation reached 13 g dry mass per 1 L medium. The content of oligoenoic ('polyenoic') fatty acid (PUFA), i.e. eicosapentaenoic (EPA), was in excess of 35 % of total fatty acids; the productivity was thus 88 mg/L per d. This result makes the alga a very prospective organism that may serve as a new biotechnological source of single cell oil.
We used direct ESI-MS analysis to identify derivatives of cardiolipin molecular species (i.e. O-acyl glycosylated cardiolipins) from the thermophilic bacterium Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris. We used triple-quadrupole type mass spectrometer for analysis of this complex lipid and enzymatic hydrolysis and 1H and 13C NMR for the identification of these cardiolipin derivatives. These techniques enabled us to identify and quantify the specific molecular species profiles of derivatives of cardiolipin directly from lipid extracts of the bacterium including the identification of the sugar moiety as alpha-D-mannose and all five acyls including their positional isomers.
A new xanthone derivative having axial chirality was isolated from Penicillium vinaceum. Owing to the axial chirality, its structure, including absolute configuration, was determined by means of extensive spectroscopic data, such as UV, IR, MS, and 1D and 2D NMR spectra, and computational chiroptical methods. The new compound, (a R)-2'-methoxyvinaxanthone, has a structure containing two aromatic moieties with substituents hindering rotation about the biaryl axis. The compound gave positive results in a sea urchin egg test ( Paracentrotus lividus) and a crown gall tumor on potato disks test (Agrobacterium tumefaciens).

Hirtusneanoside, a new O-deoxyglycoside of a dimeric tetrahydroxanthone, was isolated from the lichen Usnea hirta. Its structure, including the absolute configuration, was determined by means of extensive spectroscopic data (UV, IR, MS, CD, 1D and 2D NMR) and chemical degradation. Hirtusneanoside has a unique structure comprising L-rhamnopyranoside of a tetrahydroxanthone dimer and showed growth inhibitory activities against Gram-positive bacteria.
