V článku je poukázáno na profesi sestry a její vývoj. Jsou vymezeny hlavní znaky profese (existence systematické teorie, profesní autorita, systém profesních asociací, profesní etika) a je konstatováno, že povolání sestry splňuje všechny znaky profese. Další část článku je věnována profesionalizaci ošetřovatelství a to nástupu „nového systému ošetřovatelství“ v 80. letech minulého století ve většině vyspělých západních zemí. Snaha o profesionalizaci je ve vyspělých průmyslových zemích považována za přirozenou a legitimní. Přesto se někteří sociální kritici znepokojují nad rostoucí důležitostí profese v moderní společnosti. Jsou uvedeny názory některých autorů (Freidson, Smith, Dingwall, Rafferty aj.), týkající se podřízenosti ošetřovatelství lékařské profesi. Tito autoři nahlíží na lékařskou profesi v rámci zdravotnického systému jako na prototyp profese a ošetřovatelství je popisováno jako poloprofese z důvodů nedostatku autonomie a vnímaného omezeného základu znalostí. Autorka vyjadřuje své stanovisko k těmto názorům, které pokládá za jednostranné v tom, že vyvozují charakteristiku ošetřovatelství a zejména profesionalizaci sester ze stavu v nemocnicích a nezachycují důsledky současných probíhajících změn. Poslední část článku je věnována problematice elit, neboť i v ošetřovatelství lze podle některých autorů (Clarke, Miers, Godin) hovořit o horizontálních a verti-
In the article presented here, the profession of nurse and its development is considered. The main characters of the profession (existence of systematic theory, professional authority, system of professional associations, professional ethics) are delimited and it is concluded that the occupation of nurses comprises all the characters of a profession. A further part of the article is aimed at introducing the professionalism in nursing: onset of “new system of nursing” in the 1980´s in most advanced western countries. The attempts aimed at the introduction of the professionalism are considered as natural and legitimate in advanced industrial countries. In spite of this, certain social critics are worried about the growing importance of the profession in the modern society. Standpoints of certain authors (Freidson, Smith, Dingwall, Rafferty etc.) considering nursing subordinate to the medical profession are mentioned. These authors consider the medical profession within the framework of the health system as a prototype of a profession with describing nursing as a semi-profession due to a lack of autonomy and perceived restricted basis of knowledge. The author expresses her standpoints concerning these opinions and she considers them as one-sided in the sense that they derive the characteristics of nursing and particularly professionalism of nurses based on the conditions in hospitals, without taking into account consequences of currently occurring changes. The last part of the article is aimed at problems of elites, since in nursing it is possible to consider horizontal and vertical elites in accordance with certain authors (Clarke, Miers, Godin). The vertical elitism is present between nurses having different positions within the scope of a health facility. The horizontal elitism is affected by the medical model and by the importance, which is considered with emphasizing scientific and technical knowledge.

Alternativní léčba je obvykle interpretována jako nežádoucí stín provázející moderní vědecké lékařství. Publikace Vladana Hanulíka zprostředkovává vhled do historie vzniku a růstu popularity nekonvenčních léčebných praktik v první polovině 19. století. Originální interpretace ukotvuje dění v lázních Gräfenberg v kontextu etablující se medicíny a nabízí především napínavý a strhující příběh – příběh vody, léčení, Vincenze Priessnitze a jeho pacientů. Jakkoliv novátorský je přístup, kterým autor vymezil postavení nekonvenčních/alternativních léčebných praktik, především hydropatie, tak za originální lze považovat již samotné uchopení tématu. V duchu praktik každodenního života Michela de Certeau autor poukazuje na schopnost dějinných aktérů nabourávat dominantní strategie moci a jejich působení na možnost nezávislého jednání.
