BACKGROUND: Twenty-four-hour movement behaviours are gaining attention in the research community. However, no study has addressed how 24-h activity profiles vary between structured and less structured days and whether an unfavourable activity profile is associated with childhood obesity. We aimed to analyse differences between school day and weekend day 24-h activity profiles and their associations with adiposity indicators among children and adolescents. METHODS: Participants were 382 children and 338 adolescents who wore wrist accelerometers for 24 hours a day for seven consecutive days. The 24-h activity profile expressed by the average acceleration (AvAcc) and intensity gradient (IG) were estimated from multi-day raw accelerometer data. Adiposity indicators included body mass index (BMI) z-score, fat mass percentage (FM%), fat mass index (FMI), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Multiple linear regression of activity profile metrics and adiposity indicators was performed separately for school and weekend days. RESULTS: Weekend days AvAcc and IG were lower compared to school days in both age groups (p <0.001 for all). Specifically, AvAcc was lower by 9.4% and 11.3% in children and adolescents, respectively. IG on weekend days was lower (more negative) by 3.4% in children and 3.1% in adolescents. Among children, on school days AvAcc and IG were negatively associated with FM%, FMI, and VAT, whilst on weekend days AvAcc was positively associated with BMI z-score, FMI, and VAT (p < 0.05 for all). Among adolescents, negative associations were found between weekend day AvAcc and IG and FM% and FMI (p < 0.05 for all), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the importance of 24-h activity profile as a potentially protective factor against excess adiposity. The variability of movement behaviours during structured and less structured days should be considered when optimizing the 24-h movement behaviours to prevent childhood obesity.
OBJECTIVES: (1) To develop reference values for health-related fitness in European children and adolescents aged 6-18 years that are the foundation for the web-based, open-access and multilanguage fitness platform (FitBack); (2) to provide comparisons across European countries. METHODS: This study builds on a previous large fitness reference study in European youth by (1) widening the age demographic, (2) identifying the most recent and representative country-level data and (3) including national data from existing fitness surveillance and monitoring systems. We used the Assessing Levels of PHysical Activity and fitness at population level (ALPHA) test battery as it comprises tests with the highest test-retest reliability, criterion/construct validity and health-related predictive validity: the 20 m shuttle run (cardiorespiratory fitness); handgrip strength and standing long jump (muscular strength); and body height, body mass, body mass index and waist circumference (anthropometry). Percentile values were obtained using the generalised additive models for location, scale and shape method. RESULTS: A total of 7 966 693 test results from 34 countries (106 datasets) were used to develop sex-specific and age-specific percentile values. In addition, country-level rankings based on mean percentiles are provided for each fitness test, as well as an overall fitness ranking. Finally, an interactive fitness platform, including individual and group reporting and European fitness maps, is provided and freely available online (www.fitbackeurope.eu). CONCLUSION: This study discusses the major implications of fitness assessment in youth from health, educational and sport perspectives, and how the FitBack reference values and interactive web-based platform contribute to it. Fitness testing can be conducted in school and/or sport settings, and the interpreted results be integrated in the healthcare systems across Europe.

Background: Today an increasing number of people own devices that provide information about their PA. The availability and options of modern information and communication technologies (ICT) bring potential for their utilization within a school environment as tools to support the physical activity (PA) of pupils. However, before interventions with the aid of ICT are introduced in school, it is useful to know the opinions of the individuals at whom are directly targeted, or to whom they immediately relate. Objective: The aim of the study was to describe the opinions of Czech pupils and teachers concerning ICT and their utilisation in support of PA. Methods: The data were obtained with focus groups incorporating teachers (n = 6) and pupils aged 11 to 15 years (n = 23) from three secondary schools in the Czech Republic. The scenario of focus groups was target on opinions concerning ICT, specifically those which could serve to support active lifestyle. The interviews were recorded verbatim and subjected to a content analysis with the use of generated anonymous codes. Results: Secondary school pupils are aware of both the benefits and risks of the use of ICT. The main motivations for the use of ICT in support of PA are social, in the sense of competitiveness, comparison and interaction with peers. Although teachers tend to consider technologies to be beneficial, they view ICT for the support of PA as inauthentic and as having a short-term effect. Their use in schools frequently encounters problems in the form of insufficient technical facilities and weak support on the part of parents and colleagues. In developing applications for contemporary adolescents, it is necessary to meet the stringent demands placed by this section of the population regarding their functions, variability and the individual needs of the users. Conclusions: Czech pupils and teachers view the potential of ICT in support of PA as consisting especially in the use of mobile applications connected with smart watches. The biggest impact on their use had social motives. The human element is still important for the longer-term effects of these interventions.
Rodičovské charakteristiky byly shromážděny dotazníkovou metodou a byly vyjádřeny úrovní tělesné hmotnosti, účastí ve volnočasové pohybové aktivitě (PA), sedavým chováním a nejvyšším dosaženým vzděláním. Výsledky: Bylo prokázáno, že volnočasová PA matky snižuje riziko nadváhy a obezity u dcery téměř dvojnásobně (poměr šancí [OR] = 0,51; 95% konfidenční interval [CI] = 0,29-0,92; p = 0,025). V případě PA otce bylo také pozorováno téměř 2krát nižší riziko nadváhy a obezity u dcery (OR = 0,54; 95% CI = 0,30-0,95; p = 0,032) a 3krát nižší riziko zvýšené adipozity u syna (OR = 0,36; 95% CI = 0,17-0,77; p = 0,008). Děti, jejichž rodiče dosáhli vysokoškolského vzdělání, měly téměř 2krát nižší riziko nadváhy a obezity (dcera-matka, OR = 0,52; 95% CI 0,28-0,96; p = 0,037; syn-otec, OR = 0,46; 95% CI = 0,31-0,93; p = 0,031). Obezita matky zvyšuje riziko nadváhy a obezity 3,2krát u dcery (OR = 3,24; 95% CI = 1,48-7,05; p = 0,003) a téměř 4krát u syna (OR = 3,99; 95% CI = 1,27-12,58; p = 0,018). V případě otce bylo pozorováno zvýšené riziko nadváhy a obezity pouze u dcery (OR = 4,25; 95% CI = 2,23-8,12; p < 0,001).
Background: In addition to genetic factors, overweight and obesity are determined by lifestyle. However, the setting of children's and adolescents' lifestyle is not completely the result of their decisions. Parents shape the habits of their children and play the role of a model. Therefore, there is likely to be an association between parental characteristics and overweight and obesity status in their children. Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the associations between selected parental characteristics and overweight and obesity in their children. Methods: The research involved 528 children (58% girls) aged 9-17 years and their parents. Overweight and obesity in children was determined by means of BMI z-score with respect to fat mass percentage (i.e., excess adiposity). Parental characteristics were collected by a questionnaire and included weight status, participation in leisure physical activity (PA), sedentary behaviour, and highest educational attainment. Results: It has been confirmed that mothers' leisure PA decreases the risk of overweight and obesity in their daughters almost two times (odds ratio [OR] = 0.51; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0,29-0.92; p = 0.025). In the case of fathers' PA, the results suggested an almost two times lower risk of overweight and obesity in their daughters (OR = 0.54; 95% CI = 0.30-0.95; p = 0.032) and three times lower risk of excess adiposity in their sons (OR = 0.36; 95% CI = 0.17-0.77; p = 0.008). Children of parents with a university degree had an almost two times lower risk of overweight and obesity (daughter-mother, OR = 0.52; 95% CI 0.28-0.96; p = 0.037; son-father, OR = 0.46; 95% CI = 0.31-0.93; p = 0.031). Mothers' obesity increased the risk of overweight and obesity three times in their daughters (OR = 3.24; 95% CI = 1.48-7.05; p = 0.003) and almost four times in their sons (OR = 3.99; 95% CI = 1.27-12.54; p = 0.018). In the case of fathers, the results suggested an increased risk of overweight and obesity only in their daughters (OR = 4.25; 95% CI = 2.23-8.12; p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results presented in this study showed a significant association between parental characteristics and the risk of overweight and obesity in children. For this reason, primary and secondary prevention of childhood obesity should focus on the development of comprehensive intervention programmes that involve all family members.

Background: Lack of physical activity (PA) is associated with a negative impact on human health. In adolescence, an individual develops behaviour that can affect his/her health in adulthood. PA of adolescents in the Czech environment monitored in detail during schooldays, but less described on weekends. It is rare to compare the real PA of an individual and perceived PA of his/her peers in the Czech conditions. Objective: This study aims to find out whether Saturday's achieved PA is different from Saturday's perceived PA and if this relationship is influenced by school grade and sex. Methods: The study sample includes 1,586 adolescents aged 11 to 15 years. The data were collected in 2018 in the Czech Republic. Pupils completed an on-line questionnaire focused on their own PA and perceived level of PA in their peers. Statistical differences were examined using the Pearson chi-square test. Results: In our research sample 59.9% of Czech adolescents met health recommendations for PA (at least 60 minutes of PA) during the monitored Saturday. Significantly more boys (6.3%) than girls (3.4%) report zero PA on Saturday (X2 = 7.125; p = 0.008). However, only 37.0% of pupils believe that most of their classmates met the health recommendations for PA last Saturday. The responses of boys and girl significantly differ (X2 = 18.687; p = 0.001). Pupils believe that 41.9± 23.6% of their classmates had at least one hour of PA on Saturday. This estimation differs by 18 percentage points from the reported situation, so achieves statistically significant difference. Conclusions: The level of the real PA of an individual and perceived level of Saturday's PA in peers significantly differs among Czech adolescents. Based on the social norms theory it is appropriate to target educational interventions directly into the Czech educational system.

Celosvětově uznávané modely změny chování opomíjejí tělesnou kondici a dostatečně nereflektují národní historický vývoj populace a také demografická, sociální a další specifika středoevropských podmínek. Cíle: Cílem projektu "Multifaktoriální výzkum zastavěného prostředí, aktivního životního stylu a tělesné kondice české mládeže" bylo: a) stanovení významných determinant, korelátů, mediátorů a moderátorů ve výzkumné triádě: podmínky prostředí - pohybově aktivní životní styl - tělesná kondice; b) verifikace internetových výzkumných technik pro sebehodnocení, evidenci a komplexní diagnostiku pohybově aktivního životního stylu adolescentů. Metodika: Výzkum byl realizován u adolescentů 7. a 8. ročníků základních škol (13-14 let) a 1. a 2. ročníků středních škol (15-16 let) s následným opakováním po půl roce v jarním (podzimním) období. Protokol zahrnul postupy pro sběr dat na individuální úrovni (struktura a objem pohybové aktivity pomocí dotazníkového šetření v systému INDARES a akcelerometru ActiGraph/krokoměru Yamax a testování tělesné kondice). Zastavěné prostředí a socioekonomický status byly hodnoceny subjektivně pomocí dotazníku IPEN Adolescent a u vybraných specifických souborů pro projekt IPEN Adolescent také pomocí geografických informačních systémů. Výsledky: Výsledky této studie poskytnou cenné informace o životním stylu, tělesné kondici a o zastavěném prostředí, ve kterém adolescenti tráví většinu svého času.
Background: Previous studies have confirmed the relationship between the built environment and the physical activity of the adult population. However, research to address this relationship in children and adolescents is limited. World-recognized patterns of behavioral change neglect physical fitness and do not sufficiently reflect the national and historical development of the population, as well as demographic, social and other specificities of the Central European region. Objective: The aim of the project "Multifactorial research of the built environment, active lifestyle and physical condition of Czech youth" was: a) finding of important determinants, correlates, mediators and moderators in the research triad environment - physically active lifestyle - physical fitness; b) Verification of Internet research techniques for self-assessment, registration and comprehensive diagnostics of adolescents' active lifestyle. Methods: The research was conducted in adolescents from the 7th and 8th grades of elementary schools (13-14 years) and 1st and 2nd grades of secondary schools (15-16 years), followed by repetition after half a year in the spring (autumn) period. The protocol included procedures for data collection at individual level (structure and volume of physical activity using the INDARES questionnaire survey and the ActiGraph accelerometer/Yamax pedometer and fitness testing). The built environment and socioeconomic status were subjectively assessed using the IPEN Adolescent questionnaire and selected IPEN Adolescent specific files also using geographic information systems. Results: The results of this study provide valuable insights into lifestyle, physical fitness, and the built environment in which adolescents spend most of their time. Conclusions: The conclusions of the project serve as recommendations for school and community practice. Finding the role of specific aspects of the built environment in relation to adolescent physical activity is essential to support their active lifestyle.
Cílem studie bylo posoudit úroveň složek tělesné zdatnosti u dětí z libereckého regionu z mezinárodního hlediska vyjádřeného výsledky populačně odpovídajících zahraničních studií. Liberecké soubory zahrnovaly 131 chlapců a 132 dívek ve věku 10–12 let. Při výběru zahraničních studií z celkem 16 zemí byly v rámci expertního posouzení homogenity dat zohledněny: metodika testování, věková struktura souborů, rozsah souborů a aktuálnost dat. V úrovni silově-vytrvalostních dispozic horní části trupu a břišních svalů i v úrovni síly a flexibility extenzorů trupu patřily výsledky libereckých souborů k nejlepším publikovaným hodnotám. Zjištěné výsledky vykazují určitý nesoulad mezi ze zdravotního hlediska relativně nepříznivými výsledky v tělesném složení a naopak příznivými hodnotami aerobní kapacity, silových dispozic a flexibility u libereckých souborů. To může signalizovat potencionální problém s tendencí k poklesu úrovně tělesné zdatnosti.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of physical fitness components in children from the Liberec region from the international point of view expressed by the corresponding foreign studies. Liberec samples consisted of 131 boys and 132 girls aged 10–12 years. In the selection of foreign sources (16 countries) for comparison were taken into account: the methods of testing, the age structure, the number of individuals and the data topicality. Liberec children ranked in body composition in the upper half of the measured results straight behind North American and the Pyrenean populations. This is not good information from the health aspect. Contrary, positive results were obtained in aerobic capacity. Liberec boys lined up in the top half of the published results and the girls reached even the best results from all countries. The results of Liberec samples belong to the best of published in muscular strength and endurance of upper part of the body, abdominal muscles and also in the strength and flexibility of trunk extensors. The results show a discrepancy from health point of view between relatively unfavorable results in body composition and vice versa favorable values of aerobic capacity, strength dispositions and flexibility in Liberec children. This may indicate a potential problem with a tendency of decrease in the level of physical fitness.

Background: Physical activity (PA) is an important factor affecting human health. Active commuting to school can help pupils increase the total number of steps per day and to meet health recommendations for PA. To improve the promotion and increased use of active commuting it is crucial to identify factors influencing the choice of the form of transport. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether active commuting to school helps pupils in the Czech Republic to meet health recommendations for PA, and how the choice of this form of transport affects walking distance. Methods: The survey was attended by 1,745 adolescents from randomly selected primary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic. To identify the preferred form of commuting the standardized Adolescent IPEN questionnaire was used. PA represented by average number of steps per day was monitored using a Yamax SW 700 Digiwalker pedometer. The study included only pupils with a complete record of the steps for 7 days. The health recommendation for PA was set at 11,000 steps per day for girls and 13,000 steps per day for boys. To compare the results of the two groups the Chi-squared test was used. Results: A greater proportion of pupils, who meet health recommendations for PA, occur in the group using the active forms of commuting to school, such as walking or riding a bike or skateboard. All differences between groups are statistically significant (p < .05). The majority (85%) of pupils, who commute actively to school, live within a 20 minute walking distance. Conclusions: In accordance with the data published in world literature, this study confirms the hypothesis that active commuting to school contributes to the successful achievement of health recommendations for PA in adolescents.

V minulosti byly využívány dotazníky, krokoměry a akcelerometry.
Physical activity (PA) is one of the factors that positively affect health. Recent studies confirm that the type of the built environment can influence the physical activity behaviour. This relationship can be examined by a variety of methods (questionnaires, pedometers and accelerometers). At present, use of geographic information systems (GIS) and satellite positioning systems such as the global positioning system (GPS) appears to be very appropriate. Using GPS devices can locate PA in space and time. This information can help us understand the issue of active lifestyle. The main objective of this study is to clarify the use of GPS technology for PA monitoring in the Czech Republic. PA monitoring using GPS devices was conducted in Olomouc in 2014. One-week measurement was performed by 160 students (63 boys) from three primary schools. PA intensity was monitored by ActiGraph GT3X and localized by GPS logger Holux RCV – 3000. The combination of data from the accelerometer and GPS logger allows us to predict more easily where and at what intensity level the participants were active. Data imported into GIS can be analyzed and compared with the type of environment. We can easily estimate the influence of environmental elements such as parks or bike paths to the structure of participants’ PA. The use of GPS devices can very effectively contribute to the localization of PA and facilitate formulation of recommendations to promote PA in municipal practice. Such recommendations can be helpful in improving health of the population. However, usage of these devices in practice has many restrictions such as inaccuracy, battery capacity, slow first satellite connection and negative participants’ attitude towards this type of research.
The main aim of the theoretical study is to provide an overview and to compare test systems that can be currently used for evaluation of physical fitness in school-aged individuals in the Czech Republic. EUROFIT, FITNESSGRAM, INDARES, OVOV and UNIFITTEST are currently the most widely used test systems in our country. Each of them has certain advantages and disadvantages in their usage and in the measured data interpretation. The comparative method based on eight criteria set out as the most suitable the test battery FITNESSGRAM despite minor shortcomings (absence of normatively referenced standards and higher cost of necessary equipment). FITNESSGRAM reflects modern approaches to the evaluation of physical fitness. The presented material is a contribution to the clarification of the meaning and the development of the physical fitness concept. From a practical point of view this will help physical education teachers to decide which test system to choose according to the specific school conditions.
