In squash, various strategic and tactical situations arise where the player has to decide how to react and what type of shot to choose. The rally pace is not established in squash. The aim is to find out the game characteristics and rally pace in elite-level women's squash matches at Professional Squash Association tournaments. We watched video recordings of women's matches at the elite level of squash. In total, we analysed 10014 shots in 11 matches. The average number of shots in the women's matches was 12.4 ± 2.5, and the tally pace reached 1.39 ± 0.05 s. There was no statistical significance between winners and losers for the rally pace of specific shots. In terms of shot frequency, the female players hit the backhand shot in 64 % of the cases, and the most common error was when the player hit the ball too low onto the front wall (63 %). These observed game indicators show the characteristics of game performance at the elite women's squash level. In practice, these pieces of information can help coaches and female players to develop training units and strategies.
Background: Numerous studies have demonstrated the positive impact of scaled equipment on the playing performance of young tennis players. Nonetheless, there is a need for further research to explore the impact of scaled equipment on the skill development of beginner adult tennis players. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effects of ball compression and scale court sizes on the learning of tennis skills of beginner adult tennis players. Methods: Twenty-four beginner players (age 20.9 ± 1.2 years) were randomly divided into a regular ball group (RB, n = 12) and a low-compression ball group (LCB, n = 12) on-court training twice per week for six weeks. The RB played with standard yellow tennis balls, while the LCB used low-compression balls (red, orange, and green) during the intervention. Pre and post-tests included the Tennis-Specific Skills Test (TSST) and the International Tennis Number test (ITN). Results: The results demonstrated that the LCB showed higher technical characteristics after training (p < .05, ηp2 between .18 and .36) except for the mobility assessment (p > .05, ηp2 = .02) and the TSST scores in terms of forehand, backhand, and rally length (p < .05, ηp2 = .16-.19). Conclusions: This study indicates that the LCB might be more suitable equipment to improve technical skills and hitting performances. Practitioners can use the LCB to design an effective training plan, especially for young and adult beginner tennis players.

Na základě 2D kinematické analýzy jsme hodnotili bod zásahu míče u podání: 1) úspěšné 2) do sítě 3) do autu - dlouhý 4) do autu - do strany. Úspěšné podání hráči zasahovali v průměrné vzdálenosti 61,6 cm (osa X) od základní čáry směrem k síti a v průměrné výšce 272,9 cm (osa Y). Analýza rozptylu neukázala žádný významný rozdíl, i když post-hoc testy ukázaly významný rozdíl (p<0,05) mezi dobrými podáními a do autu do strany na ose X; a na téže ose došlo k velkému efektu věcné významnosti mezi podáními do sítě a do autu do strany (d=0,94). Nadhoz podání ovlivňuje úspěšnost podání, avšak hráči mohou do jisté míry pomocí vlastních pohybových dovedností kompenzovat jeho nepřesnosti a korigovat svůj pohyb a docílit úspěšného podání.
The flat serve is characterized by its speed. If it is successfully executed, the serving player can achieve a service winner or an advantage for the following rally. The goal is to find out the relation between the serve toss and the success of the first (flat) serve in tennis. We observed 8 competitive tennis players who served 40 flat serves. They were videotaped on a high-speed camera (200 Hz) from the side view. On the basis of 2D kinematic analysis, we evaluated the racket-ball impact during 1) successful serves 2) serves into the net 3) serves fault-long 4) serves fault-wide. Successful serves were hit by players at a mean distance of 61,6 cm (X-axis) from the baseline towards the net and at a mean height of 272,9 cm (Y-axis). Analysis of variance showed no significant difference, although post-hoc tests showed a significant difference (p < 0,05) between successful serves and serves fault-wide on the X-axis; and on the same axis there was a large effect size between serves into the net and to the serves wide (d = 0,94). The serve toss affects the success of the serve, but players can to some extent use their own movement skills to compensate for its inaccuracies and make corrections in their movement to achieve a successful serve.
The Relative Age Effect (RAE) has been the subject of many studies, but few have focused on professional athletes in individual sports. The aim of this study was to verify the existence of the RAE among elite senior female tennis players (top 100 players) in the WTA Rankings (n = 1000) in the years 2007-2016. The analysis was performed among top 100, resp. top 10 female tennis players, among players in 4 age subgroups and among left-handed (LH) and right-handed (RH) players. The existence of the RAE was assessed with the use of chi-square test (goodness of fit). More than half of top 100 players were born in first semester: both in individual years (53.0-63.0%) and in the whole observed period (58.4%). Significant RAE (ES medium) was observed in top 100 female players only in 2012 and 2016; significant RAE (ES small) was detected in the period of 2007-2016. Among the top 10 players, significant RAE (ES medium) was demonstrated during the whole period. No significant RAE (ES medium) was detected in the 17-18y subgroups, significant in 19-24y and 25-30y (ES small) as well as in 31-36y (ES medium). Although significant RAE was observed in the subgroups of LH and RH female players, ES was large only in the LH. The results contribute to the expansion of the knowledge about the reduction of the RAE existence in adulthood among coaches, athletes and tennis officials.

Background: Annual age grouping is a widely used strategy to allocate players to age categories for more equal and fair opportunities considering the developmental differences. Although it is a well-intended strategy, certain (dis)advantages occur because of the subtle age-related differences within the same age groups. Objective: The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relative age effect among badminton players reaching the podium in the last three consecutive European U15, U17 and Junior (U19) Badminton Championships. Methods: A total of 288 medal owners from 20 countries were evaluated in the study. Chi-square (χ2) goodness-of-fit tests were used to compare the obtained birth month distributions across the quartiles (Q), and odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated in order to compare quartiles with each other. Results: Statistically significant relative age effects were determined favouring relatively older athletes in the total sample (χ2 = 82.278, p < .001). Statistically significant distribution differences were noted in both singles and doubles categories in total (χ2 = 18.778, p < .001; χ2 = 63.815, p < .001, respectively). Striking findings were determined in Q1-Q4 and Q2-Q4 comparisons as players in Q1 and Q2 were more than five and four times as likely to reach the podium than players in Q4, respectively. Conclusions: Results of this study confirm the presence of relative age effect among award-winning badminton players which goes beyond the classical participation trends findings, and stress the importance of the issue for talent development, selection and success.

Porovnáváme mezi sebou dva mezinárodní turnaje tenisu mužů stejné kategorie ITF Men's World Tennis Tour.
Even on a lower level of tennis tournament, a player has a very short time to hit an incoming ball as the ball travels quickly and has various ball trajectory. The aim is to compare the rally pace and selected match characteristics between the clay and hard court at the lower level of international tennis tournaments. We compare two ITF Men's World Tennis Tour tournaments - the Milovice Open (hard court) and the RPM Open (clay court). We analysed 1629 points in 15 matches at the Milovice Open and 1296 points in 10 matches at RPM Open. The results showed that the rally pace was significantly faster at the Milovice Open (1,27 ± 0,05 s) compared RPM Open (1,32 ± 0,05 s) t(23) = 2,68, p < 0,05, (d = 1,20); and also significant difference was found in the work/rest ratio between the Milovice Open (1:3,72 ± 0,75) and the RPM Open (1:3,02 ± 0,60) t(23) = -2,25, p < 0,05, (d = 0,94). The rally was finished within the first 4 shots in 61% at the Milovice Open compared to 53% at the RPM Open. This study shows and compares selected match characteristics on lower level of international tennis tournaments in men's tennis. We found some interesting information, that can be useful for players and coaches.

Úvodní údery v rozehře každého hráče nabízejí různé taktické možnosti v badmintonu. Cílem je porovnat v utkání mužů a žen četnost a účinnost podání, příjmu podání a kombinace prvních tří úderů rozehry. Sledovali jsme 15 utkání mužů a 15 utkání žen na české nejvyšší úrovni. Zaznamenávali jsme typ a směr prvních tří úderů rozehry.
The first shots of a rally provide various tactical options in badminton. The aim is to compare the frequency and efficiency of the serve, return shot and the combination of the first three shots in male and female matches. We observed 15 male and 15 female matches from the top level players in the Czech Republic. We observed the type and direction of the first three shots of the rally. Male players used the backhand short serve in 88 % of cases, while female players used the forehand high serve in 80 %. Based on the serve type, different returns shot and shot combinations were available. The frequency and efficiency of specific shots and shot combinations are shown in the results below. The game conception differs between the genders and the difference starts with the first shot of the rally. It is important to consider these gender game specifics in the practice sessions and players development.

Tennis players hit the ball very fast and the incoming ball from the opponent travels very quickly. The player has only a limited time to reach the ball, to take the position and to execute the stoke. The aim is to compare the rally pace and selected match characteristics at the US Open between theearly stage (1st–4thround) and the final stage (quarterfinal – final). We observed the rally length, point duration, but mainly the rally pace i.e. the ball travel time between the players in the rally. Weanalysed 220 points in 11 matches. The results showed that the rally pace in women’s matches rangedbetween 1,37 – 1,57 s. No significant difference was found between the early stage 1,48±0,07 s andthe final stage 1,50±0,06. However, the results contributed to the understanding of the rally pace. The study introduced a new approach of measuring the rally pace and provided data for coachingpractice.
