Titan byl objeven roku 1791 knězem a chemikem Wiliamem Gregorem. Titan je součástí nerostů Rutilu, Anatasu a Brookitu. Z těchto nerostů ho získáváme průmyslově a je to čtvrtý nejrozšířenější kov na zemi. První zmínky o technickém použití titanu pochází ze 30. let 20. století, kdy byl využíván ve vojenském průmyslu.
