Habitats with alkaline edaphic substrates are often associated with plant speciation and diversification. The tribe Alysseae, in the family Brassicaceae, epitomizes this evolutionary trend. In this lineage, some genera, like Hormathophylla, can serve as a good case for testing the evolutionary framework. This genus is centered in the western Mediterranean. It grows on different substrates, but mostly on alkaline soils. It has been suggested that diversification in many lineages of the tribe Alysseae and in the genus Hormathophylla is linked to a tolerance for high levels of Mg+2 in xeric environments. In this study, we investigated the controversial phylogenetic placement of Hormathophylla in the tribe, the generic limits and the evolutionary relationships between the species using ribosomal and plastid DNA sequences. We also examined the putative association between the evolution of different ploidy levels, trichome morphology and the type of substrates. Our analyses demonstrated the monophyly of the genus Hormathophylla including all previously described species. Nuclear sequences revealed two lineages that differ in basic chromosome numbers (x = 7 and x = 8 or derived 11, 15) and in their trichome morphology. Contrasting results with plastid genes indicates more complex relationships between these two lineages involving recent hybridization processes. We also found an association between chloroplast haplotypes and substrate, especially in populations growing on dolomites. Finally, our dated phylogeny demonstrates that the origin of the genus took place in the mid-Miocene, during the establishment of temporal land bridges between the Tethys and Paratethys seas, with a later diversification during the upper Pliocene.

The work focused on Tl uptake by white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) grown on moderately contaminated soils with different characteristics. The data presented here clearly demonstrate the ability of white mustard to (hyper)accumulate Tl. Substantially higher Tl levels were was found in mustard grown on the Arenosol as compared to the carbonate-rich Leptosol; a relationship between the content of labile Tl (adsorbed, bound to carbonates etc.) in soil and its uptake by the plant is suggested. Approximately 3-fold lower concentrations of Tl in roots and stems of the mature mustard (compared to the young plant) indicate a decreasing trend of Tl uptake with the age of the plant. The exchangeable/acid-extractable and reducible Tl fractions were evaluated as the dominant fractions controlling Tl transfer from both contrasting soils. Thallium associated with the residual fraction (e.g., incorporated into silicates) was rather stable in the rhizosphere, proving a negligible influence of root exudates on Tl release from such an operationally defined fraction, despite the anthropogenic origin of Tl. Regarding our results, when mustard is cultivated for nutrition purposes and/or as green manure, it may pose an important source of Tl introduction into the food chain.
The two Noccaea species-Noccaea praecox originating from Mežica, Slovenia (Me) (Pb, Zn, Cd pollution) and Noccaea caerulescens from Redlschlag, Austria (Re) (high levels of Ni, Cr, Mg)-were studied to compare Cd accumulation and tolerance. After 120 days of plant cultivation in Cd-contaminated soil (90 mg Cd kg(-1) soil), gas-exchange parameters (e.g. net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, and intercellular CO2 concentration), fatty acids, and selected macro- and microelements were determined in addition to N utilization by plants. The comparison between ecotypes showed that Cd stress resulted in similar changes in gas-exchange parameters. Contrasting responses of plants to Cd contamination were confirmed by the macro- and microelement contents and fatty acid and amino acid metabolism. Significantly higher accumulations of Cd and strong decreases in the levels of K, Ca, Na, and Fe were observed in the Me plants in contrast to the Re plants. The higher Re plant ability to take in some cations is a result of selective pressure due to contamination. Different ion uptake by plants affected the activities of metalloenzymes. Significant increases in the glutamic acid/proline ratio resulted from higher adaption of the Me in contrast to the Re plants.

AIMS: To identify bacteria with high selenium tolerance and reduction capacity for bioremediation of wastewater and nanoselenium particle production. METHODS AND RESULTS: A bacterial endophyte was isolated from the selenium hyperaccumulator Stanleya pinnata (Brassicaceae) growing on seleniferous soils in Colorado, USA. Based on fatty acid methyl ester analysis and multi-locus sequence analysis (MLSA) using 16S rRNA, gyrB, rpoB and rpoD genes, the isolate was identified as a subspecies of Pseudomonas moraviensis (97.3% nucleotide identity) and named P. moraviensis stanleyae. The isolate exhibited extreme tolerance to SeO3(2-) (up to 120 mmol l(-1)) and SeO4(2-) (>150 mmol l(-1)). Selenium oxyanion removal from growth medium was measured by microchip capillary electrophoresis (detection limit 95 nmol l(-1) for SeO3(2-) and 13 nmol l(-1) for SeO4(2-)). Within 48 h, P. moraviensis stanleyae aerobically reduced SeO3(2-) to red Se(0) from 10 mmol l(-1) to below the detection limit (removal rate 0.27 mmol h(-1) at 30 °C); anaerobic SeO3(2-) removal was slower. No SeO4(2-) removal was observed. Pseudomonas moraviensis stanleyae stimulated the growth of crop species Brassica juncea by 70% with no significant effect on Se accumulation. CONCLUSIONS: Pseudomonas moraviensis stanleyae can tolerate extreme levels of selenate and selenite and can deplete high levels of selenite under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Pseudomonas moraviensis subsp. stanleyae may be useful for stimulating plant growth and for the treatment of Se-laden wastewater.

Ethical reflection is a process that comes from the deeper attitudes and values of the therapist and supervisor. The capability to recognize one's perspectives and ethical dimensions and how they affect own practice is one of the crucial tasks of a responsible therapist. Attitudes and values of an individual or a group may significantly influence the therapeutic process and a choice of strategies and behaviour towards the patient, often working at an unconscious, unreflected levels. Ethics is closely connected with psychotherapeutic treatment. Basic principles, such as expediency, honesty, integrity, justice, and respect, apply to all people equally, including psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and supervisors. The goal of supervision is to cultivate the therapeutic process in the client's best interest. The supervisor-supervisee relationship is then grounded on principles similar to those in the therapeutic relationship.
