Přehledový článek uvádí aktuální informace o tetanu, který je preventabilní očkováním. Stále ovšem existují země, kde na toto onemocnění umírají lidé. Článek je rozdělen do následujících částí: aktuální výskyt, právní podklady vakcinace a surveillance tetanu v ČR, epidemiologická situace tetanu v zemích EU a EEA/EFTA v průběhu let 2005–2009, stárnutí populace – globální problém vakcinace věkové kohorty nad 65 let, výskyt celkového a novorozeneckého tetanu v regionech WHO, tetanus v USA, nová Tdap vakcína a doporučení pro její aplikaci, TETANOS QUICK TEST (TQS) – test pro rychlé stanovení hodnoty ochranné hladiny protilátek proti toxoidu tetanu.

This review article presents current information on tetanus which may be prevented by vaccination. In some countries people still die from this disease. The article is divided into the following parts: current occurrence of tetanus, legal framework governing vaccination and tetanus surveillance in the Czech Republic; epidemiological situation of tetanus in the EU and EEA/EFTA countries, 2005 – 2009; population ageing – global problem of vaccination in the 65+ age group; occurrence of generalized tetanus and neonatal tetanus in WHO regions; tetanus in the U.S., new Tdap vaccine and recommendations for its application; TETANOS QUICK TEST (TQS) – test for quick determination of the protective level of antibodies against tetanus toxoid.
