Výběrový soubor tvoří 20 žen a mužů, prarodičů, kteří mají v pěstounské péči alespoň jedno vnouče a vychovávají jej minimálně po dobu dvou let.
This paper is focused around the various aspects of a specific kind of kinship foster care provided by grandparents. Major goals of the part of the extensive research presented in the paper are to characterize the process of the acceptance of a child into a foster care by grandparents, examine the most common reasons for the need of foster care, capture the ways children react to the separation from their biological parents and, last but not least, describe children’s relationships with their parents, their mutual contact and expectation of the relationship’s further stages. These goals are evaluated from the grandparents' perspective. Methodologically, the paper is based on a qualitative research. The screening method used was semi-structured interview with grandparent fosters. The sample consisted of 20 women and men – grandparents who have been providing foster care to at least one grandchild for the minimum of two years. In total, there were 21 grandchildren in grandparents’ foster care researched. The results of the research show that children are going to foster care for a variety of causes, which we divided into three categories: socially unacceptable behavior of the parents (alcohol/drug abuse, being involved in crime, physical abuse of the child, neglected child or similar reasons), personal qualities of the parents (unreadiness to raise a child due to parents’ early age, irresponsibility, aggression, psychological instability) and parents’ personal life events (end of a partner relationship, leaving the child, relocation, job loss, lack of funds, …). Children’s reactions to the separation from parents showed on emotional, cognitive and behavioral levels. Personally in touch with their mothers were 15 of the children, while only 8 with their fathers. Due to the rising number of grandparents providing kinship foster care the findings of the research can be found useful in the field of psychological counseling or for professionals working with foster families.

The paper deals with the psychological aspects of short-term foster care. It points at the numerous drawbacks of this form of foster care, especially in the context of children's psychic needs, but it also suggests how it can potentially be used. The article is based on a detailed study of specialised literature and is supported by an extensive research of 50 adults who have grown up in long-term foster care. In this research we were investigating how people brought up in foster families perceive the significance of both their biological and foster families, their personal experience with the two (or sometimes more) families, whether and how they kept in touch with the biological parents, the characteristics of their process of coping with their non-standard personal histories. The research output has convincingly shown that the permanent nature of the environment and belonging to the family are extremely significant in the eyes of formerly fostered children. These days, however, the stability of placing the child is – due to the promotion and realisation of short-term foster care – often underestimated and so is the closely related child's need to belong to the family permanently. The research findings, data from specialised literature and facts from practical experience show the great importance of caution and a very sensitive, individualistic approach when applying the short-term foster care.

The Czech Republic has been repeatedly criticised for the large number of children who are being placed into institutional substitute family care. A solution, for which inspiration can be found e.g. in Scandinavian countries, is to increase the number of foster families, which would provide upbringing in a substitute family for children from a risky environment. However, it has to be a systemic process of preparing foster parents for this uneasy social mission. Important feedback is without doubt studies which are carried out in foster families. Most surveys focus on the experiences of parents-fosterers with raising children in a substitute family. On the other hand, there is a nearly total lack of surveys which would reflect the opinions, experiences and possibly also the needs of the children themselves. This deficiency has been tackled by the authors of this text, which is dealing with the issues of integration of a child into a foster family, and where the experiences with integration of a child into a family were mapped by a qualitative research inquiry – both from the side of parents-fosterers and the children themselves. Knowledge resulting from a semi-structured interview supported by a family history, a drawing of the family and a pie chart of happiness and worries have been used for the final interpretation of the conclusions drawn from this research.
