The internal tobacco industry documents have also been used to study tobacco industry operations outside the United States. The scope of the documents on a country outside the US is decided mainly by the extent to which documents and reports were transmitted from the abroad offices of the US tobacco companies to headquarters. We explored whether the material from a private archive of a Finnish public relation consultant to Philip Morris will augment or revise the earlier reports on tobacco industry manipulation in Finland. The private records add more details to previously published reports. The new information mainly concerned implementation of the tobacco industry strategies. A general conclusion is that tobacco industry documents may not give a detailed picture of tobacco industry activities in distant markets, which would be of interest locally, even if they provide sufficient information to convey a general view of tobacco industry strategies.

National Medical Library (NML), Czech Republic, has implemented a self-archiving service for Czech authors of biomedical research publications, supporting the Green OA Self archiving mandate. The self-archiving service is composed mainly from Open Source components. A publication in the PDF format is easily submitted through Medvik web portal. Authorized submitter is guided through the process and is obliged to select a suitable Creative Commons license. Several steps are taken to ensure that the submitted material can be archived and made freely accessible for everyone using open licensing. The uploaded PDF file is transformed into an archiving package which is automatically imported into NML’s Digital library. The Digital library uses Open Source system based on Fedora repository and it is open for metadata harvesting through OAI-PMH standard and thus the archived publications can be promoted to higher level repositories, i.e. Open-AIRE and Czech Digital Library. Other functionalities have been implemented using integration of Scopus, Web of Science, JCR and Sherpa/RoMEO web services which allows to provide additional relevant information in a publication record view context.
Digital image archiving is necessary in all medical specialties including Obstetrics and Gynecology. Integration of digital technologies into common practice started almost 40 years ago. It was much slower in Gynecology comparing to Radiology. All modern diagnostic tools are equipped with digital output. Mostly used tools in Gynecology are ultrasound and endoscopic camera. Great advantage of digital image data is their high quality, durability, safe archiving and easy retrieval. Digital images are part of the patient’s documentation which can be easily worked on, shared with other physicians and hospitals if necessary. Anonymous data can be used as a source of image material for the educational purposes destined for doctors and enlarging number of medical students.

BACKGROUND: The picture archiving and communication system (PACS) has already replaced classic hard copy film technology. With new functions of PACS under consideration, attention turns to the sharing of medical images between different institutions. The Czech Republic is one of the few countries using a nation-wide medical images exchange system known as ePACS. It is based on dedicated hardware and one central router, although theoretical models tend to prefer cloud-based sharing. OBJECTIVE: Despite its simple design and lack of advanced features, this system has successively evolved into a widely used tool. The aim of this article is to offer an overview of its use and functions and to show that even a simple system can be widely used. METHODS: Using data from the producer of ePACS (the ICZ company) and from other sources, the system was described and data about its performance have been obtained. RESULTS: Every acute-care hospital (140) and about a quarter of outpatient facilities (105) in the Czech Republic are now equipped with ePACS and are therefore able to share medical images. The number of studies transmitted rises every year, from 12,000 in 2008 to more than 640,000 in 2018, which is approximately 4% of all studies produced. The system was primarily designed and is used to share images between acute-care hospitals but a very special usage has also evolved, as it is employed in a teleradiology service with private enterprises too. CONCLUSION: ePACS is expanding in the Czech Republic despite having only limited functions and despite its principle that simply copies a classic workflow when sending studies on Compact Discs. Although other systems for image sharing might be more advanced, ePACS brings to the Czech health care system the capability to exchange medical images on a national level.

Příspěvek popisuje freewarové řešení instalace DICOM serveru pro získání digitalizovaného obrazu v DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) formátu z jakéhokoliv DICOM kompatibilního zařízení bez nároku na náročný hardware.
Life sciences are yielding huge data sets that underpin scientific discoveries fundamental to improvement in human health, agriculture and the environment. In support of these discoveries, a plethora of databases and tools are deployed, in technically complex and diverse implementations, across a spectrum of scientific disciplines. The corpus of documentation of these resources is fragmented across the Web, with much redundancy, and has lacked a common standard of information. The outcome is that scientists must often struggle to find, understand, compare and use the best resources for the task at hand. Here we present a community-driven curation effort, supported by ELIXIR-the European infrastructure for biological information-that aspires to a comprehensive and consistent registry of information about bioinformatics resources. The sustainable upkeep of this Tools and Data Services Registry is assured by a curation effort driven by and tailored to local needs, and shared amongst a network of engaged partners. As of November 2015, the registry includes 1785 resources, with depositions from 126 individual registrations including 52 institutional providers and 74 individuals. With community support, the registry can become a standard for dissemination of information about bioinformatics resources: we welcome everyone to join us in this common endeavour. The registry is freely available at https://bio.tools.
