Cross-lateralisation and increased motor difficulties have been reported in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Nevertheless, the question of how crossed (i.e. mixed preference) or uncrossed (i.e. same side preference) lateralisation impacts motor performance in children with ADHD has yet to be examined. In this study, previously validated observational measures of hand and foot preference were used to identify right-handed children with ADHD who display cross- (n = 29) and uncross-lateralisation (n = 31). An uncross-lateralised typically developing (TD) group (n = 32) was also identified, and included as a control. Motor performance was assessed with seven valid and reliable fine and gross motor tasks performed with both preferred and non-preferred limbs. Group, task and sex-related effects were examined. Findings revealed that male (but not female) cross-lateralised children with ADHD performed significantly worse, respectively, in two of the fine motor tasks (spiral tracing [p < .01], and dot filling [p < .05]). Results suggest that cross-lateralised hand and foot preference may affect complex motor skills in male children with ADHD. Furthermore, characteristics of ADHD may manifest differently in male and female children. Findings highlight the importance of considering both hand and foot preference when targeting motor interventions for children with ADHD.

In connection with the more frequent hypokinetic lifestyles and the declining fitness of children, the aim of our research was to assess and compare the fitness of 60 pupils at practical elementary school and 60 pupils at ordinary elementary school aged 14-15. Seven motor tests were used to this end (“deep forward bendâ€, “standing long jumpâ€, “press-upsâ€, “repeated sit-upsâ€, “60 m runâ€, “1500 m run†(for boys)/“800 m run†(for girls). As we expected, lower fitness levels were proven among pupils at practical elementary school, with the exception of the performance of girls in the “deep forward bend†test and “60 m runâ€. As far as inter-sex differences are concerned, boys always achieved better results, with the exception of the flexibility test in both sets of children and the “60 m run†among pupils at practical elementary school. The biggest difference between boys’ and girls’ performance was found in the “standing long jump†in both sets of children. A not entirely obvious but to some extent alarming approximation of performances in selected motor tests can be observed – we attribute this not to the improving fitness of pupils at practical elementary school but rather to the declining fitness of pupils at ordinary elementary school. This is particularly evident among girls. When the two sets of children are compared overall, the children’s performances were most similar in the flexibility test, while there were big differences in the dynamic endurance and strength tests. We see the main reason for the slow convergence in the fitness of practical elementary school children and ordinary elementary school children in their low degree of participation in regular organised exercise.

The aim of this paper is to outline how physical education taught at spe- cial schools intended primarily for children with mild intellectual disability has evolved. The institutions in question are special s chools (offi cially referred to as “practical elementary schools”), which have existed since 1 948. Research of both historical and contemporary legislat ion and other sources related to the education of children with specifi c e ducational needs indicates that there has essentially been no change in the we ekly allotment of physical education. With the exception of periods 1953–1960 and 1978–1993, three hours a week have always been and continue to be set aside for physical educa- tion in every class. Any changes observed apply instead to the content of these lessons and organisational matters related to teachi ng. This fact is undoubtedly linked to the social changes that have taken place in all fi elds of human activity and the gradual formation and improvement of the leg al conditions for the edu- cation of people with various disabilities. Given the quantity of legislation enacted it is fai r to say that since the tur- ning-point year of 1989 the legislation has paid considerably more attention to individuals with special educational needs, such as mild intellectual disability, than in previous periods – not only is there more l egislation, it is also more detailed and thorough.

Relatively little expert attention is paid to assessing the fitness or motor performance standard of children with mild intellectual disability, or children at special schools, in the Czech Republic. The aim of our research was therefore to ascertain the standard of selected fitness indicators among children attending practical elementary schools and to compare the findings with same-age children at ordinary elementary schools. Five field motor tests focusing mainly on fitness (Standing broad jump, Repeated sit-ups, 12-minute run, 4 x 10 m shuttle run, Sit and reach test) were conducted on 153 children attending special schools in Prague (age 10,62 ± 0,56 years) and, for comparison, 99 children from ordinary elementary schools (age 10,40 ± 0,57 years). Compared to their typically developing peers, the fitness of the children from special schools, in other words pupils with mainly mild intellectual disability, was statistically (p = 0.05) and substantively (Cohen’s d index) different. The biggest differences in performance were found in the Repeated sit-ups test; the smallest in running tests. The primary reason for this should be sought both in their intellectual disability and the specific attributes associated with it and also in the insufficient standard of external conditions (school, family). The research results highlight the urgent need to devote due attention and space to the motor abilities of special school pupils, as there is no doubt that even children with mild intellectual disability possess the sufficient prerequisites to develop their movement abilities.

Jednotlivé canisterapeutické lekce přispěly k celkové relaxaci dítěte a uvolnění svalového napětí dlaní a chodidel.
Canistherapy finds most frequently its applications as a supplementary method in persons with longterm course of the treatment with non-beneficial prognosis. One of forms of canistherapy – positioning – is particularly suitable for children with severe forms of poliomyelitis and those with combined defects. The target of the work presented here was to determine the ability to relax in a boy of 7 years of age with dystonic-dyskinetic form of poliomyelitis and severe retardation of the psychomotor development in the course of a canistherapeutic lesson; whether or possibly after what time period the relaxation of his muscle tone will be accomplished and emotional harmony will be improved and whether regular repeating of canistherapeutic lessons can permanently improve the child condition. The work is based on the technique of participating observation. The parameters investigated were dyskinetic motions of the head and limbs of the child, the frequency of which was a parameter of the physical and mental condition within the framework of canistherapeutic positioning. The observation was carried out in the course of ten subsequent lessons held at one-week intervals except one case when the child was ill. Thanks to positioning, a reduction was achieved in the rate of dyskinetic motions to about half the baseline value, and several times, even complete vanishing of dyskinesia was temporarily achieved. Long-term reduction in the rate to dyskinetic motions thanks to canistherapy was, however, not demonstrated. Particular canistherapeutic lessons contributed to the general relaxation of the child and relief of the muscle tension in palms and soles of the foot. After the lessons, the child was satisfied and always more interested in communication with the surroundings. The contribution of canistherapy or positioning within the framework of the rehabilitation programme of the boy was definitely demonstrated, but it is necessary to emphasize that the data acquired and conclusions derived cannot be generalized for the whole population of children with this form of poliomyelitis, since in individuals with the same diagnosis, there are differences in effects of the contact with the dog.
