Animals are faced with a range of ecological constraints that shape their behavioural decisions. Habitat features that affect resource abundance will also have an impact, especially as regards spatial distribution, which will in turn affect associations between the animals. Here we utilised a network approach, using spatial and genetic data, to describe patterns in use of space (foraging sites) by free-ranging Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) at the Dakhla Oasis in Egypt. We observed a decrease in home range size during spring, when food availability was lowest, which was reflected by differences in space sharing networks. Our data showed that when food was abundant, space sharing networks were less connected and more related individuals shared more foraging sites. In comparison, when food was scarce the bats had few possibilities to decide where and with whom to forage. Overall, both networks had high mean degree, suggesting communal knowledge of predictable food distribution.

Objectives. The present paper investigated environmental factors influencing variations in walking speed in an urban environment. In Study1 participants were asked to walk along a route in the city of Hradec Králové. The aim was to investigate the effect of various layouts of greenery and natural elements on variations in walking speed. In Study 2 participants evaluated a set of photographs taken on the route. The aim was to determine which variables are predictors of preference of particular environment. Next, relations between environmental preferences and variations in walking speed were investigated. Sample and setting. In Study 1 undergraduates (N=106, 53 females, mean age=20.6) were asked to walk around a street circuit located on the edge of the historical area of the city Hradec Králové. The route (length about 2 km) was formed through the streets with a greater range of greenery or with alleys. The route was divided into 11 sections, in which the walking speed was measured. Two directions of the walk on the route were employed: direction A (from section 1 to section 11) and direction B (from section 11 to section 1). Subjects were asked either to walk without any interruption (condition 1) or to stop on marks located prior to the beginning of the measured section (condition 2). In Study 2 undergraduates (N=77, 42 females, mean age=20.7), who took part in Study 1, were invited to evaluate photographs of particular parts of the walking route employed in the first study. Participants were required to evaluate individual sceneries by variables spaciousness, refuge, enclosure, coherence, legibility, complexity, mystery, openness, and amount of natural elements. Next, they were asked to rate their preferences for these sceneries. Hypotheses. It was predicted that preference of an environmental character of a section results in slower walking speed in this section. It was assumed that sections with higher amount of greenery will be preferred most. Statistical analysis. In Study 1 differences of walking speeds in particular sections was analyzed. Repeated ANOVA was used to detect which variables affect walking speed. In Study 2 multiple regressions were carried out to find the contribution of particular variables to the preference of particular scenery. Results. The results revealed consistent patterns of walking speed variations across all conditions. The most conspicuous deceleration of walking speed occurred in the sections, which were formed by a long dense oak alley. The evaluation of photographs showed that these sections had higher amount of perceived coherence, mystery, and natural elements. At the same time, they were the most preferred. Study limitation. The study examines spatial patterns of effects of high temperature extremes on cardiovascular mortality in the Czech Republic at a district level during 1994-2009. Daily baseline mortality for each district was determined using a single location-stratified generalized additive model. Mean relative deviations of mortality from the baseline were calculated on days exceeding the 90th percentile of mean daily temperature in summer, and they were correlated with selected demographic, socioeconomic, and physical-environmental variables for the districts. Groups of districts with similar characteristics were identified according to socioeconomic status and urbanization level in order to provide a more general picture than possible on the district level. We evaluated lagged patterns of excess mortality after hot spell occurrences in: (i) urban areas vs. predominantly rural areas; and (ii) regions with different overall socioeconomic level. Our findings suggest that climatic conditions, altitude, and urbanization generally affect the spatial distribution of districts with the highest excess cardiovascular mortality, while socioeconomic status did not show a significant effect in the analysis across the Czech Republic as a whole. Only within deprived populations, socioeconomic status played a relevant role as well. After taking into account lagged effects of temperature on excess mortality, we found that the effect of hot spells was significant in highly urbanized regions, while most excess deaths in rural districts may be attributed to harvesting effects.

The normal physiologic range of QRS complex duration spans between 80 and 125 ms with known differences between females and males which cannot be explained by the anatomical variations of heart sizes. To investigate the reasons for the sex differences as well as for the wide range of normal values, a technology is proposed based on the singular value decomposition and on the separation of different orthogonal components of the QRS complex. This allows classification of the proportions of different components representing the 3-dimensional representation of the electrocardiographic signal as well as classification of components that go beyond the 3-dimensional representation and that correspond to the degree of intricate convolutions of the depolarisation sequence. The technology was applied to 382,019 individual 10-s ECG samples recorded in 639 healthy subjects (311 females and 328 males) aged 33.8 ± 9.4 years. The analyses showed that QRS duration was mainly influenced by the proportions of the first two orthogonal components of the QRS complex. The first component demonstrated statistically significantly larger proportion of the total QRS power (expressed by the absolute area of the complex in all independent ECG leads) in females than in males (64.2 ± 11.6% vs 59.7 ± 11.9%, p < 0.00001-measured at resting heart rate of 60 beats per minute) while the second component demonstrated larger proportion of the QRS power in males compared to females (33.1 ± 11.9% vs 29.6 ± 11.4%, p < 0.001). The analysis also showed that the components attributable to localised depolarisation sequence abnormalities were significantly larger in males compared to females (2.85 ± 1.08% vs 2.42 ± 0.87%, p < 0.00001). In addition to the demonstration of the technology, the study concludes that the detailed convolution of the depolarisation waveform is individual, and that smoother and less intricate depolarisation propagation is the mechanism likely responsible for shorter QRS duration in females.

The sustenance of humans and livestock depends on the protection of the soil. Consequently, the pollution of the soil with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is of great concern to humanity. The objective of this study is to investigate the source apportionment, concentration levels and spatial distribution of PTEs in selected soils in Frýdek-Místek District of the Czech Republic. The total number of soil samples was 70 (topsoil 49 and 21 subsoils) and was analysed using a portable XRF machine. Contamination factor and the pollution index load were used for the assessment and interpreting the pollution and distribution of PTEs in the soils. The inverse distance weighting was used for the spatial evaluation of the PTEs. The results of the analysis showed that the area is composed of low-to-high pollution site. PTEs displayed spatial variation patterns. The average PTE concentration decreases in this Fe > Ti > Ba > Zr > Rb > Sr > Cr > Y>Cu > Ni > Th order for the topsoil and also decreases in this Fe > Ti > Zr > Ba > Rb > Sr > Cr > Y > Cu > Ni > and Th order for the subsoil. These PTEs Cr, Ni, Cu, Rb, Y, Zr, Ba, Th, and Fe were far above the baseline European average value and the World average value level, respectively. The source apportionment showed the dominance of Cr, Ni, Rb, Ti, Th, Zr, Cu, Fe in the topsoil, while the subsoil was dominated by all the PTEs (factor 1 to 6) except Ba. The study concludes that indiscriminate human activities have an enormous effect on soil pollution.

The interaction of arthropods with the environment and the management of their populations is a focus of the ecological agenda. Spatial autocorrelation and under-sampling may generate bias and, when they are ignored, it is hard to determine if results can in any way be trusted. Arthropod communities were studied during two seasons and using two methods: window and panel traps, in an area of ancient temperate lowland woodland of Zebracka (Czech Republic). The composition of arthropod communities was studied focusing on four site level variables (canopy openness, diameter in the breast height and height of tree, and water distance) and finally analysed using two approaches: with and without effects of spatial autocorrelation. I found that the proportion of variance explained by space cannot be ignored (≈20% in both years). Potential bias in analyses of the response of arthropods to site level variables without including spatial co-variables is well illustrated by redundancy analyses. Inclusion of space led to more accurate results, as water distance and tree diameter were significant, showing approximately the same ratio of explained variance and direction in both seasons. Results without spatial co-variables were much more disordered and were difficult to explain. This study showed that neglecting the effects of spatial autocorrelation could lead to wrong conclusions in site level studies and, furthermore, that inclusion of space may lead to more accurate and unambiguous outcomes. Rarefactions showed that lower sampling intensity, when appropriately designed, can produce sufficient results without exploitation of the environment.

Recent rise in tick-borne diseases in many parts of Europe is a phenomenon in need of an explanation. We analyzed temporal trends in spatial distribution of a population at risk of Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, and as a control, also of a 'non-tick-borne disease' in the Czech Republic in 1997-2010. Analysis revealed that the population's exposure had been increasingly confined to the nearest surroundings of residences or in totally residential locations and that the incidence of the diseases depended in some causal way on how close to residences people exposed themselves to the risk. The rise in Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis was solely due to infections acquired at or near patients' homes (<5 km), while the number of cases acquired further away was decreasing. The detected patterns in the data question some of the hypotheses which may be applicable in explaining the rise in disease incidences in the Czech Republic including the effect of climate change. Potentially causal factors are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the variation in baseline and seizure onset zone interictal high-frequency oscillation (HFO) rates and amplitudes across different anatomic brain regions in a large cohort of patients. METHODS: Seventy patients who had wide-bandwidth (5 kHz) intracranial EEG (iEEG) recordings during surgical evaluation for drug-resistant epilepsy between 2005 and 2014 who had high-resolution MRI and CT imaging were identified. Discrete HFOs were identified in 2-hour segments of high-quality interictal iEEG data with an automated detector. Electrode locations were determined by coregistering the patient's preoperative MRI with an X-ray CT scan acquired immediately after electrode implantation and correcting electrode locations for postimplant brain shift. The anatomic locations of electrodes were determined using the Desikan-Killiany brain atlas via FreeSurfer. HFO rates and mean amplitudes were measured in seizure onset zone (SOZ) and non-SOZ electrodes, as determined by the clinical iEEG seizure recordings. To promote reproducible research, imaging and iEEG data are made freely available (msel.mayo.edu). RESULTS: Baseline (non-SOZ) HFO rates and amplitudes vary significantly in different brain structures, and between homologous structures in left and right hemispheres. While HFO rates and amplitudes were significantly higher in SOZ than non-SOZ electrodes when analyzed regardless of contact location, SOZ and non-SOZ HFO rates and amplitudes were not separable in some lobes and structures (e.g., frontal and temporal neocortex). CONCLUSIONS: The anatomic variation in SOZ and non-SOZ HFO rates and amplitudes suggests the need to assess interictal HFO activity relative to anatomically accurate normative standards when using HFOs for presurgical planning.
