Mental health literacy (MHL) grows in importance as the prevalence of mental health conditions rises worldwide. There is a need for valid MHL measures especially among adolescents. The current study aims to develop and validate a Universal mental health literacy scale for adolescents (UMHL-A), a self report scale to assess MHL of children between ages 10 and 14 across all four components within Kutcher's framework for MHL. The development of the UMHL-A was initiated by a literature review and followed by item generation. Then, we tested the face and content validity of the scale via a delphi study, focus groups and cognitive interviews with the target group. Next with a convenience sample, we established the factor structure and construct validity of the scale using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Lastly, we tested the scale convergent validity with other measures. The final form of the scale was refined on a representative sample of Czech asolescents. The UMHL-A scale comprises 17 items measuring four components of MHL. The scale has substantial methodological advantages in comparison to existing measures of MHL, especially considering its brevity and comprehensive coverage of MHL. Further studies are needed to test its application and validity globally.

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is spread by droplet infection. Children are at risk of complications, subsequent hospitalization and, in the most severe cases, even death. One of the effective forms of prevention of influenza in children is increasing the health literacy of parents in the given issue. In the presented article, the authors present the results of a survey in the area of parents' awareness of flu prevention in children.

When educating and informing patients, it is necessary to think about the clarity of the given information, taking into account that a large part of population has low health literacy and it may be difficult to understand more specialized information. European Association of Urology (EAU) is creating a website with factually correct and well understandable information, which is currently becoming available also to Czech patients. The possibilities for their use are very wide and offer Czech health professionals and patients a very effective tool for improving information and thus the course of treatment.
Statistické zpracování dat bylo provedeno programy SASD 1.4.12 (Statistical Analysis of Social Data) a SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences).
Stroke is a severe disease, a worldwide medical and economic problem. Despite reducing mortality in the Czech Republic, the incidence is still high. The main aim of our research was to focus on the comprehensive prevention of ischemic stroke in people living in the Czech Republic; a sub-objective was to evaluate the psychological burden of work as a possible risk factor for stroke. A combination of a non-standardized stroke prevention questionnaire, a non-standardized questionnaire to assess occupational and psychological strain, and a standardized general health literacy questionnaire (HLSQ-16) were used to collect data. These factors were then analyzed about each sociodemographic characteristic and then compared by mean values with each other to determine the strength of their influence. The field survey was conducted throughout the CR using the technique of a standardized personal interview between the interviewer and the respondent from November to December 2019. The sample of citizens was constructed as a quota sample and was structured to match the composition of all citizens of the Czech Republic in terms of regions, gender, and age. These characteristics were intended to be representative. In total, the sample consists of 1004 citizens. The assessment of psychological stress was carried out on respondents involved in the work process. 66.0% (N = 663) of respondents participated in this assessment. Statistical data processing was done using SASD 1.4.12 (Statistical Analysis of Social Data) and SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). In evaluating the non-standardized questionnaire for assessing psychological distress, in some cases, the power of the test was weakened by the insufficient number of observations in the three fields of the contingency table, so Yates correction was applied. According to the results, factors representing the most significant psychological strain include time pressure and the fact that the work is so demanding that it cannot be done for years with the same performance. Conversely, according to our respondents, the least burdensome factors were the ability to maintain attention at work and the presence of conflicts and problems at work.

Cieľ: Vyhľadať a analyzovať relevantné výskumné štúdie zamerané na problematiku zdravotnej gramotnosti seniorskej populácie a zistiť, ktoré meracie nástroje sa používajú najčastejšie. Metódy: Naratívny literárny prehľad je výsledkom obsahovej analýzy relevantných štúdií z plnotextových elektronických databáz ScienceDirect, PubMed a BiblioMedica CZ za roky 2011–2022. Celkový počet vyhľadaných štúdií bol 64, vyradených 45, do konečnej analýzy bolo zaradených 19 štúdií, ktoré splnili zaraďujúce kritériá. Výsledky: Väčšina meracích nástrojov meria funkčnú zdravotnú gramotnosť, teda schopnosť seniora správne pochopiť a používať zdravotnícke informácie. K najčastejšie používaným meracím nástrojom patrili Health Activities Literacy Scale, European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire, Newest Vital Sign, Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults. K ďalším menej používaným patrili eHealth Literacy Scale, Emotional Literacy Support Assistants, Health Literacy Management Scale, Health Literacy Questionnaire, National Assessment of Adult Literacy a Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine. Záver: V oblasti zdravotnej starostlivosti a podpory zdravia seniorov je dôležité objektívne posúdiť úroveň zdravotnej gramotnosti reliabilným a valídnym meracím nástrojom.
Aim: Search and analyse relevant research studies focused on the issue of health literacy of the senior population and find out which measurement tools are used most often in the European context. Methods: The narrative literature review is the result of a content analysis of relevant studies from the full-text electronic databases ScienceDirect, PubMed and BiblioMedica CZ for the years 2011–2022. The total number of searched studies was 64, 45 were excluded, 19 studies that met the inclusion criteria were included in the final analysis. Results: Most measuring instruments measure functional health literacy, the senior’s ability to correctly understand and use health information. The most frequently used standardized tools included the Health Activities Literacy Scale, European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire, Newest Vital Sign, and Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults. Other used included the eHealth Literacy Scale, Emotional Literacy Support Assistants, Health Literacy Management Scale, Health Literacy Questionnaire, National Assessment of Adult Literacy, and Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine. Conclusion: In the field of health care and health promotion, it is important to objectively assess the level of health literacy with a reliable and valid measurement tool. A limited level of health literacy has a negative impact on the need and consumption of health services. The results of European studies are a starting point for research on this issue in the Slovak senior population as well.

The paper presents the outcomes of the WHO European Region research project, Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic and the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University which concerned Czech population behaviour during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Czech Republic the research was carried out in three waves on a representative sample of respondents using methodology of a questionnaire survey. The results showed that the risk perception in connection with the pandemic was low in the Czech environment, regardless of the growing number of infected and deceased. Optimism persisted about the perception of personal susceptibility to infection and self-efficacy. General wellbeing was above average after successfully coping with the first wave, but it decreased slightly in connection with the worsening of the pandemic situation. Compliance with preventive measures has been relatively low for a long time and the trend has been rather declining. By the time, it became increasingly difficult to understand the communication of state authorities regarding the measures being implemented, and trust in the media decreased. A positive finding was the increase in the proportion of those who tried to improve the lifestyle in connection with the pandemic.

Respondenti mají největší problémy s pochopením zdravotních informací z médií a posouzením různých metod léčby. Zdravotní gramotnost je ovlivněna pohlavím, věkem a vzděláním: ženy, starší osoby a osoby s nižším vzděláním vykazují vyšší úroveň zdravotní gramotnosti. Vliv má dále sociální gradient respondenta, především subjektivní sociální status, a negativní pak finanční deprivace. Na druhou stranu zdravotní gramotnost pozitivně ovlivňuje pohybovou aktivitu respondenta; dále rovněž subjektivně pociťované zdraví a konzumaci zdravotnických potřeb. Ústav pro zdravotní gramotnost v současné době připravuje další monitoring v letech 2024–2025.
During the five years from 2015 to 2020, the proportion of people with limited health literacy decreased by 12%. This finding results from international research on the level of health literacy, which took place since 2019 till 2021 in 17 countries of the European region of the World Health Organization. In total, more than 42,000 respondents were interviewed, in Czechia there were 1,650 respondents. In 2020, however, we recorded a limited level of health literacy in 47% of the population over the age of 18. Respondents have the greatest problems with understanding health information from the media and with assessing different treatment options. Czechs (like Slovaks) have the biggest problem with following the instructions of a doctor or pharmacist. Health literacy is influenced by gender, age and education: women, older people and less educated people show higher levels of health literacy. The respondent's social gradient, primarily subjective social status has positive influence to health literacy while financial deprivation has negative influence. On the other hand, health literacy positively affects the physical activity of the respondent; subjectively perceived health and consumption of medical services are influenced as well. The Czech Health Literacy Institute is currently preparing monitoring in 2024–2025.
