In this work, a MATLAB-based graphical user interface is proposed for the visual examination of several eye movements. The proposed solution is algorithm-based, which localizes the area of the eye movement, removes artifacts, and calculates the view trajectory in terms of direction and orb deviation. To compute the algorithm, a five-electrode configuration is needed. The goodness of the proposed MATLAB-based graphical user interface has been validated, at the Clinic of Child Neurology of University Hospital of Ostrava, through the EEG Wave Program, which was considered as "gold standard" test. The proposed solution can help physicians on studying cerebral diseases, or to be used for the development of human-machine interfaces useful for the improvement of the digital era that surrounds us today.

To resolve the problem of the insufficient availability of seed cells and to provide seed cells for tissue engineering research, an immortalized human bone marrow stromal stem cell line (MSCxj cells) was established in our department to investigate the ectopic osteogenesis of MSCxj cells. MSCxjs were grown with a heterogeneous bone scaffold for 48 h. Three groups were included: A: MSCxjs of 35 PDs were maintained with heterogeneous bone; B: MSCxjs of 128 PDs were maintained with heterogeneous bone; and C: heterogeneous bone alone. Tetracycline fluorescence staining, H&E staining, and ponceau staining, immunohistochemistry and bone histomorphometry were performed. At the same time, scanning electron microscopy was conducted to detect the growth of MSCxjs and heterogeneous bone. Scanning electron microscopy showed favorable adherence of MSCxjs to heterogeneous bone. A large number of newly generated filamentous extracellular matrix and fine granular materials were found to cover the cells. The results from staining showed that the osteogenesis was not obvious in group A/B 4 weeks after transplantation. Eight weeks after implantation, osteoid matrix deposition was noted in and around the heterogeneous bone in group A/B. Twelve weeks after implantation, osteogenesis was increased in group A/B. There were no significant differences in the time course for bone formation and the amount of newly generated bone between group A/B. Like primary hBMSCs, MSCxj cells have favourable ectopic osteogenesis and can be applied as seeded cells in bone tissue engineering.

Screw loosening is one of the most common clinical problems of dental implants. Research on the influencing factors of screw loosening is very important to prevent screw loosening. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of liquid contamination on the screw loosening. According to the contamination condition, forty-five abutment screws were divided into three groups (n = 15): no contamination, artificial saliva contamination, and mouthwash contamination. The preload and friction coefficient of the abutment screws were recorded. Then, the reverse torque values (RTVs) and settlement were measured after 3.0 × 105 and 6.0 × 105 cycles. The surface wear of the screws was analyzed. Finally, the stress distribution of the abutment screws was calculated by finite element analysis (FEA). The results showed that fluid contamination reduced the friction coefficient, increased the preload, decrease the settlement, improved resistance to screw loosening, and reduced wear on the thread surface. Appropriate antimicrobial lubrication may improve the anti-loosening performance of abutment screws and prevent excessive wear on the threaded surface.

Food proteins and their peptides play a significant role in the important biological processes and physiological functions of the body. The peptides show diverse biological benefits ranging from anticancer to antihypertensive, anti-obesity, and immunomodulatory, among others. In this review, an overview of food protein digestion in the gastrointestinal tract and the mechanisms involved was presented. As some proteins remain resistant and undigested, the multifarious factors (e.g. protein type and structure, microbial composition, pH levels and redox potential, host factors, etc.) affecting their colonic fermentation, the derived peptides, and amino acids that evade intestinal digestion are thus considered. The section that follows focuses on the mechanisms of the peptides with anticancer, antihypertensive, anti-obesity, and immunomodulatory effects. As further considerations were made, it is concluded that clinical studies targeting a clear understanding of the gastrointestinal stability, bioavailability, and safety of food-based peptides are still warranted.

Females of the Indian meal moth, Plodia interpunctella, and females of the Mediterranean flour month, Ephestia kuehniella (both Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), exhibit daily rhythms in calling behavior. The peak in P. interpunctella calling occurs at dusk, whereas E. kuehniella calls preferentially at dawn. This behavior turned arrhythmic in P. interpunctella females in constant darkness (DD) and remained arrhythmic in constant light (LL), whereas E. kuehniella females showed a persistent rhythm in DD and suppression of the behavior in LL, indicating regulation by a circadian clock mechanism. The rhythm of male locomotor activity corresponded well with the sexual activity of females, reaching the peak at dusk in P. interpunctella and at dawn in E. kuehniella. An immunohistochemical study of the pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide, corazonin, and pigment dispersing factor revealed distinct sets of neurons in the brain-subesophageal complex and in the neurohemal organs of the 2 species.

Biomechanical performance plays an important role in the long-term service of dental implants. Loosening and fatigue damage of the central screw are the most common problems. This research investigated the effect of the central screw taper angle on the loosening performance and fatigue characteristics of dental implants. Central screws with four taper angles, 30°, 60°, 90° and 180°, were processed and tested. The loosening performance of the screws under initial and postload conditions was compared. Then, the fatigue characteristics of dental implants was measured. Finally, the wear and fracture modes of the screws were observed. The damage locations were verified by finite element analysis (FEA). The results showed that the central screws with 30° taper had substantially better anti-loosening performance and less fretting wear. The central screws with 180° taper had a higher preload, resulting in a longer fatigue life. Furthermore, the fatigue fracture of the central screw occurred at the level of the first thread position, consistent with the FEA results. In the future clinical applications, central screws with a 30° taper angle may improve anti-loosening performance and prolong fatigue life by increasing the tightening torque.
