Studie WHI a mnohé další studie ukázaly, že hormonální terapie zvyšuje minerální denzitu kosti u postmenopauzálních žen, významně snižuje riziko osteoporotických zlomenin a v časné postmenopauze snižuje riziko ischemické nemoci srdeční. Estrogeny by měly být lékem první volby v prevenci a léčbě osteoporózy u žen do 60 let.
For many women, menopause is associated with a range of symptoms of estrogen-deficiency syndrome that contribute to increased morbidity and reduced quality of life. These include vasomotor symptoms and urogenital symptoms as well as postmenopausal osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Hormone therapy (HT) commenced during the menopausal transition is the most effective treatment available for vasomotor and urogenital symptoms. The WHI study and many other studies showed that HT also increased bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, significantly reduced their risk of osteoporotic fractures and reduced risk of coronary heart disease in early postmenopause. Estrogens should be the first-choice therapy for osteoporosis prevention and treatment in women under 60.
