Aim: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of ATHP-HC on the severity of nausea and vomiting, relaxation state, brainwaves, and quality of life in women with Nausea and Vomiting in Pregnancy (NVP). Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 62 pregnant women randomly allocated into intervention and control groups using a pre-post-test. Researchers provided ATHP-HC to the intervention group and Cirebon Gamelan audio therapy to the control group. The research instruments included PUQE-24-hour scoring, measurement of vital signs, brainwaves using NeuroSky MindWave Mobile II, and WHOQOL-BREF. The data collected were processed with SPSS version 24.0 and analyzed using the statistical formula paired t-test. Results: The results of the study showed that there were significant differences between nausea and vomiting scores (p = 0.000), relaxation levels (p = 0.003 in the intervention group and p = 0.000 in the control group), and quality of life (p = 0.000), before and after the treatment in the intervention group and the control group. There was a significant difference in the state of relaxation after the intervention in the two groups of respondents (p = 0.001). There was no significant difference in the proportion of increased meditation in the two groups of respondents (p = 0.707). Conclusion: As relaxation and meditation music, ATHP-HC can be a complementary therapy for pregnant women to overcome NVP.

PURPOSE: This study investigated EEG alpha rhythm spectral power in children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) and compared it to typically developing children to better understand the electrophysiological characteristics of this disorder. Specifically, we explored resting-state EEG, because there are studies that point to it being linked to speech and language development. METHODS: EEG recordings of 30 children diagnosed with specific language impairment and 30 typically developing children, aged 4.0-6.11 years, were carried out under eyes closed and eyes open conditions. Differences in alpha rhythm spectral power in relation to brain topography and experimental conditions were calculated. RESULTS: In the eyes closed condition, alpha rhythm spectral power was statistically significantly lower in children with specific language impairment in the left temporal (T5) and occipital electrodes (O1, O2) than in typically developing children. In the eyes open condition, children with SLI showed significantly lower alpha rhythm spectral power in the left temporal (T3, T5), parietal (P3, Pz), and occipital electrodes (O1, O2). There were no statistically significant differences between the groups in relation to the relative change (the difference between average alpha rhythm spectral power during eyes closed condition and average alpha rhythm spectral power during eyes open condition divided by average alpha rhythm spectral power during eyes closed condition) in the alpha rhythm spectral power between the conditions. CONCLUSION: Lower alpha rhythm spectral power in the left temporal, left, midline parietal, and occipital brain regions could be a valuable electrophysiological marker in children with SLI. Further investigation is needed to examine the connection between EEG alpha spectral power and general processing and memory deficits in patients with SLI.

The phenomenon of déjà vu (DV) has intrigued scientists for decades, yet its neurophysiological underpinnings remain elusive. Brain regions have been identified in which morphometry differs between healthy individuals according to the frequency of their DV experiences. This study built upon these findings by assessing if and how neural activity in these and other brain regions also differ with respect to DV experience. Resting-state fMRI was performed on 68 healthy volunteers, 44 of whom reported DV experiences (DV group) and 24 who did not (NDV group). Using multivariate analyses, we then assessed the (fractional) amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF/ALFF), a metric that is believed to index brain tissue excitability, for five discrete frequency bands within sets of brain regions implicated in DV and those comprising the default mode network (DMN). Analyses revealed significantly lower values of fALFF/ALFF for specific frequency bands in the DV relative to the NDV group, particularly within mesiotemporal structures, bilateral putamina, right caudatum, bilateral superior frontal cortices, left lateral parietal cortex, dorsal and ventral medial prefrontal cortex, and the posterior cingulate cortex. The pattern of differences in fALFF/ALFF measures between the brains of individuals who have experienced DV and those who have not provides new neurophysiological insights into this phenomenon, including the potential role of the DMN. We suggest that the erroneous feeling of familiarity arises from a temporary disruption of cortico-subcortical circuitry together with the upregulation of cortical excitability.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that spatio-temporal dynamics of interictal spikes reflect the extent and stability of epileptic sources and determine surgical outcome. METHODS: We studied 30 consecutive patients (14 good outcome). Spikes were detected in prolonged stereo-electroencephalography recordings. We quantified the spatio-temporal dynamics of spikes using the variance of the spike rate, line length and skewness of the spike distribution, and related these features to outcome. We built a logistic regression model, and compared its performance to traditional markers. RESULTS: Good outcome patients had more dominant and stable sources than poor outcome patients as expressed by a higher variance of spike rates, a lower variance of line length, and a lower variance of positive skewness (ps < 0.05). The outcome was correctly predicted in 80% of patients. This was better or non-inferior to predictions based on a focal lesion (p = 0.016), focal seizure-onset zone, or complete resection (ps > 0.05). In the five patients where traditional markers failed, spike distribution predicted the outcome correctly. The best results were achieved by 18-h periods or longer. CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of spike dynamics shows that surgery outcome depends on strong, single and stable sources. SIGNIFICANCE: Our quantitative method has the potential to be a reliable predictor of surgical outcome.

The vertex has been used as a suitable control stimulation site in repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation studies. The objectives of this study are (1) to assess cognitive performance (CP) after theta burst stimulation (TBS); (2) to evaluate whether clinically relevant cortical areas might be reached by vertex stimulation and how that might influence CP. Twenty young healthy subjects performed a cognitive task prior to and immediately after intermittent TBS (iTBS) and continuous TBS (cTBS) of two active cortical stimulation sites and the vertex. We used the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to compare the pre- and post-stimulation reaction times (RTs) and a mixed ANOVA analysis to evaluate the effect of the stimulation on changes in RTs. A three-dimensional finite-element model (FEM) was used to calculate the vertex TBS-induced electrical field (E-field) in the adjacent regions of interest (ROIs). Correlation analyses were performed between E-fields in the ROIs and cognitive outcomes. We found a significant effect only of the stimulation time factor (F (1,12) = 65.37, p < 0.001) on RT shortening, with no superiority of the active site stimulation compared to the vertex stimulation. In 73.5% of vertex TBS sessions, a significant E-field was induced in at least one ROI. We found a negative association between the magnitude of the iTBS-induced E-fields and RT changes (R = - 0.54, p = 0.04). TBS protocols may lead to changes in CP when applied over the craniometrically targeted vertex. We therefore suggest not using a conventional approach as a vertex targeting method.

Several studies suggest that EEG parameters, reflecting top-down processes in the brain, may predict cognitive performance, e.g. short-term memory (STM) capacity. According to Lisman and Idiart's model, STM capacity is predicted by theta and gamma EEG waves and their ratio. This model suggests that the more periods of gamma band waves fit into one period of theta band waves, the more information can be stored. We replicated the study by Kaminski et al. (2011), which recorded spontaneous EEG activity and measured verbal STM capacity with a modified digit span task from the Wechsler battery. Our study included more subjects and two EEG recording sessions. We discuss the possible limits of EEG correlates of STM capacity as EEG parameters were not stable across the two measurements and no correlation was found between the theta/gamma ratio and performance in the digit span task.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy surgery fails in > 30% of patients with focal cortical dysplasia (FCD). The seizure persistence after surgery can be attributed to the inability to precisely localize the tissue with an endogenous potential to generate seizures. In this study, we aimed to identify the critical components of the epileptic network that were actively involved in seizure genesis. METHODS: The directed transfer function was applied to intracranial EEG recordings and the effective connectivity was determined with a high temporal and frequency resolution. Pre-ictal network properties were compared with ictal epochs to identify regions actively generating ictal activity and discriminate them from the areas of propagation. RESULTS: Analysis of 276 seizures from 30 patients revealed the existence of a seizure-related network reconfiguration in the gamma-band (25-170 Hz; p < 0.005) - ictogenic nodes. Unlike seizure onset zone, resecting the majority of ictogenic nodes correlated with favorable outcomes (p < 0.012). CONCLUSION: The prerequisite to successful epilepsy surgery is the accurate identification of brain areas from which seizures arise. We show that in FCD-related epilepsy, gamma-band network markers can reliably identify and distinguish ictogenic areas in macroelectrode recordings, improve intracranial EEG interpretation and better delineate the epileptogenic zone. SIGNIFICANCE: Ictogenic nodes localize the critical parts of the epileptogenic tissue and increase the diagnostic yield of intracranial evaluation.

Hippocampal high-frequency electrographic activity (HFOs) represents one of the major discoveries not only in epilepsy research but also in cognitive science over the past few decades. A fundamental challenge, however, has been the fact that physiological HFOs associated with normal brain function overlap in frequency with pathological HFOs. We investigated the impact of a cognitive task on HFOs with the aim of improving differentiation between epileptic and non-epileptic hippocampi in humans. Hippocampal activity was recorded with depth electrodes in 15 patients with focal epilepsy during a resting period and subsequently during a cognitive task. HFOs in ripple and fast ripple frequency ranges were evaluated in both conditions, and their rate, spectral entropy, relative amplitude and duration were compared in epileptic and non-epileptic hippocampi. The similarity of HFOs properties recorded at rest in epileptic and non-epileptic hippocampi suggests that they cannot be used alone to distinguish between hippocampi. However, both ripples and fast ripples were observed with higher rates, higher relative amplitudes and longer durations at rest as well as during a cognitive task in epileptic compared with non-epileptic hippocampi. Moreover, during a cognitive task, significant reductions of HFOs rates were found in epileptic hippocampi. These reductions were not observed in non-epileptic hippocampi. Our results indicate that although both hippocampi generate HFOs with similar features that probably reflect non-pathological phenomena, it is possible to differentiate between epileptic and non-epileptic hippocampi using a simple odd-ball task.

BACKGROUND: EEG mu rhythm suppression is assessed in experiments on the execution, observation and imagination of movements. It is utilised for studying of actions, language, empathy in healthy individuals and preservation of sensorimotor system functions in patients with schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders. While EEG alpha and mu rhythms are recorded in the same frequency range (8-13 Hz), their specification becomes a serious issue. THE NEW METHOD: is based on the spatial and functional characteristics of the mu wave, which are: (1) the mu rhythm is located over the sensorimotor cortex; (2) it desynchronises during movement processing and does not respond on the eyes opening. In EEG recordings, we analysed the mu rhythm under conditions with eyes opened and eyes closed (baseline), and during a motor imagery task with eyes closed. EEG recordings were processed by principal component analysis (PCA). RESULTS: The analysis of EEG data with the proposed approach revealed the maximum spectral power of mu rhythm localised in the sensorimotor areas. During motor imagery, mu rhythm was suppressed more in frontal and central sites than in occipital sites, whereas alpha rhythm was suppressed more in parietal and occipital sites. Mu rhythm desynchronization in sensorimotor sites during motor imagery was greater than alpha rhythm desynchronization. The proposed method enabled EEG mu rhythm separation from its mix with alpha rhythm. CONCLUSIONS: EEG mu rhythm separation with the proposed method satisfies its classical definition.
