Podľa dostupných štatistík takmer každá druhá žena po 50. roku života utrpí niektorú z osteoporotických fraktúr. Zlomeniny stehennej kosti ale aj stavcov majú zásadný vplyv nielen na morbiditu amortalitu, ale hlavne je dôležitá včasná a správna diagnostika tohto ochorenia. Táto má mnoho úskalí a obmedzení a je potrebné ich poznať. To nám umožní na jednej strane vyhnúť sa početným falošne negatívnym denzitometrickým výsledkom a na strane druhej neliečiť iné, často závažné ochorenia, u ktorých tiež nameriame nízku denzitu, ako osteoporózu. Popri správnej diagnostike osteoporózy má významné postavenie aj diferenciálna diagnostika sekundárnej osteoporózy a ostatných metabolických osteopatií, ktorú nie je možné robiť z denzitometzrie. Včasná a najmä správna diagnóza osteoporózy ako aj správne zhodnotenie rizikového profilu pacienta hrajú kľúčovú úlohu v rozhodovaní o zahájení špecifickej antiporotickej liečby a v poklese rizika zlomenín u našich pacientov.
