BACKGROUND: Measuring implicit attitudes is difficult due to social desirability (SD). A new method, the Emotion Based Approach (EBA), can solve this by using emotions from a display of faces as response categories. We applied this on an EBA Spirituality tool (EBA-SPT) and an Actual Situation tool (EBA-AST). Our aim was to assess the structure, reliability and validity of the tools and to compare two EBA assessment approaches, i.e., an explicit one (only assessing final replies to items) and an implicit one (assessing also the selection process). METHODS: We obtained data on a sample of Czech adults (n = 522, age 30.3±12.58; 27.0% men) via an online survey; cortisol was assessed in 46 participants. We assessed the structure and psychometric properties (internal consistency and test-retest reliability; convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity) of the EBA, and examined the differences between explicit vs. implicit EBA approaches. RESULTS: We found an acceptable-good internal consistency reliability of the EBA tools, acceptable discriminant validity between them and low (neutral expression) to good (joy) test-retest reliability for concrete emotions assessed by the tools. An implicit EBA approach showed stronger correlations between emotions and weaker convergent validity, but higher criterion validity, than an explicit approach and standard questionnaires. CONCLUSION: Compared to standard questionnaires, EBA is a more reliable approach for measuring attitudes, with an implicit approach that reflects the selection process yielding the best results.

Aim: The aim of study was to verify the Czech version of Photographic Wound Assessment Tool (PWAT) scale in the Czech context during wound assessment from wound photography and to determine inter-rater reliability of the scale. Methods: The research is a part of a prospective intervention study conducted in elderly in home care agencies from January 2017 till February 2018. The sample consisted of 40 elderly with non-healing wound of different etiology. Assessment of wound healing based on wound photography was done with the use of Czech version of PWAT scale. In order to determine the inter-rater reliability, 20 randomly selected pictures of wound were assessed by two independent raters. Results: Agreement between the first and the second rater has been found in 70% of pictures. Based on Kappa coeficient = 0.6765 it can be observed that there is substantial agreement between both raters. Conclusion: The Czech version of PWAT scale proved good inter-rater reliability and can be used for objective wound assessment of wound photography.

Aerial photographs depict objects from an overhead position, which gives them several unusual visual characteristics that are challenging for viewers to perceive and memorize. However, even for untrained viewers, aerial photographs are still meaningful and rich with contextual information. Such visual stimulus properties are considered appropriate and important when testing for expertise effects in visual recognition memory. The current experiment investigated memory recognition in expert image analysts and untrained viewers using two types of aerial photographs. The experts were better than untrained viewers at recognizing both vertical aerial photographs, which is the domain of their expertise, and oblique aerial photographs. Thus, one notable finding is that the superior memory performance of experts is not limited to a domain of expertise but extends to a broader category of large-scale landscape scenes. Furthermore, the experts' recognition accuracy remained relatively stable throughout the experimental conditions, illustrating the ability to use semantic information over strictly visual information in memory processes.

This article presents a steganographic method StegoNN based on neural networks. The method is able to identify a photomontage from presented signed images. Unlike other academic approaches using neural networks primarily as classifiers, the StegoNN method uses the characteristics of neural networks to create suitable attributes which are then necessary for subsequent detection of modified photographs. This also results in a fact that if an image is signed by this technique, the detection of modifications does not need any external data (database of non-modified originals) and the quality of the signature in various parts of the image also serves to identify modified (corrupted) parts of the image. The experimental study was performed on photographs from CoMoFoD Database and its results were compared with other approaches using this database based on standard metrics. The performed study showed the ability of the StegoNN method to detect corrupted parts of an image and to mark places which have been most probably image-manipulated. The usage of this method is suitable for reportage photography, but in general, for all cases where verification (provability) of authenticity and veracity of the presented image are required.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Epiretinal membrane (ERM) refers to a semi-translucent tissue layer found on the inner surface of the retina especially in older people. Surgical treatment remains controversial, optimal timing for such treatment is difficult to determine and data on the natural evolution of this disorder are limited. In this study we evaluated the natural course of idiopathic epimacular membrane in 49 patients (53 eyes). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of a group of 49 patients (53 eyes) with idiopathic epimacular membrane confirmed by biomicroscopy, photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT). RESULTS: Patient age ranged from 51-85 years (median 72). The average follow-up was 21.3 months (± 14). Between the initial and final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) there was no statistically significant difference although there was a significant tendency to decrease in BCVA (Spearman P=0.05) during the follow-up. Initial BCVA correlated with initial central retinal thickness (CRT), final CRT, final volume, and age. The final BCVA significantly correlated with all parameters measured. CONCLUSION: BCVA during follow-up tended to decrease: difference of starting BCVA and final BCVA values depending on the time of monitoring is significant. This we attribute to a slow gradual progression of macular changes. But, initial and final BCVA measurements were not substantially different at the end. Thus, in the absence of any clear signs of ERM progression, we can safely postpone the decision whether to perform PPV.

With respect to the recent trend in medicine, referred to as P4-medicine (Personalized, Predictive, Preventive and Participative), health care systems must cope with larger volume of complex sets of heterogeneous and multidimensional data. In addition, they have to cope with increasing volumes of unstructured and frequently continuous information. In this context there appears a question how to define suitably the concept of data quality. It is not an easy task to characterize the concept at well structured data because it is multidimensional. Big data add two more dimensions of complexity, namely specific features given by data source and high degree of unstructuredness, frequently without any reference to a golden standard. We will present a case study from the area of diabetology and show how important understanding data context and data source are, how to explain mutual relations among data from multiple sources and results in relation to a subject (data source).
