Článek přináší současné pohledy na koncept emoční komplexity. Cílem je představit tento pojem a jeho aplikační potenciál s důrazem na kognitivní souvislosti. V důsledku rozporů v definicích emoční komplexity (a emocí obecně) jsou prezentovány následující aspekty emoční komplexity: 1) dialektičnost, 2) relativní nezávislost mezi prožívanými emocemi, 3) emoční granularita, 4) úroveň emočního uvědomování. Je také diskutován vztah mezi emoční a kognitivní komplexitou. Kromě toho jsou uvedeny nejpoužívanější metodologické postupy spolu se svými nedostatky – deskripce minulé zkušenosti, způsoby zachycování aktuálního emočního prožívání, monitorování vlastních emocí a narativní přístupy. Článek se nakonec věnuje vývoji emoční komplexity a příbuzným psychologickým konstruktům (např. regulaci emocí) a na příkladech z klinické populace poukazuje na důležitost emoční komplexity u mnohých psychických poruch a na užitečnost tohoto konceptu v terapeutické praxi.

The paper brings together current views on emotional complexity. Its aim is to introduce this term and its potential application with emphasis on cognitive aspects. Due to relatively high inconsistency in definitions of emotional complexity (and emotion in general), the following aspects of emotional complexity are presented: 1) dialecticism, 2) independence between experienced emotions, 3) emotional granularity, 4) level of emotional awareness. The relationship between emotional and cognitive complexity is discussed. Moreover, the methodologies employed most frequently – description of past experience, experience sampling measures, emotion self-monitoring, and narrative approaches – are debated with respect to their limitations.Lastly, the authors address the development of emotional complexity and related psychological constructs (e.g. emotion regulation). Examples from clinical populations are provided to illustrate an importance of emotional complexity in various psychological disorders and the usefulness of the concept in psychotherapy.

V článku je předložen model narativní komplexity. Jako východiska modelu jsou využity Todorovův pojem „narativní transformace“ a Brunerův koncept „potíž“. Narativní transformace je chápána jako to, „co vyprávění dělá s konstitutivní potíží“. S využitím těchto pojmů je narativní komplexita definována jako diferenciace a integrace různých aspektů narativní transformace. Pojem narativní komplexita poukazuje jak k dispozici, tak také k procesu i výsledku narativního ztvárnění zkušenosti v její složitosti, úplnosti a proměnlivosti. Model umožňuje včlenit do jednoho logicky konzistentního rámce různé aspekty narativní komplexity, tak jak byly doposud koncipovány z různých dílčích teoretických či praktických hledisek. Předložený model sestává z osmi souvisejících aspektů: 1) diferenciace a integrace tématu vyprávění, 2) diferenciace a integrace aktérství, 3) diferenciace a integrace narativní konstrukce, 4) diferenciace a integrace ztvárnění hodnot a přesvědčení, 5) diferenciace a integrace na rovině reflexe, 6) diferenciace a integrace hledisek a perspektiv, 7) diferenciace a integrace utváření postav, 8) diferenciace a integrace na rovině komunikačního a sociokulturního kontextu. Na závěr jsou zmíněny některé teoretické a empirické možnosti předloženého modelu.

Model of narrative complexity is articulated. Todorov's concept of “narrative transformation” and Bruner's concept of “trouble” are used as a frame of narrative complexity conceptualization. Narrative transformation is presented as “something what story telling does with constitutive trouble”. Narrative complexity is thus defined as a differentiation and integration of various aspects of narrative transformation. Narrative complexity refers both to disposition and also to the process and to the result of narrative experience constructing in its complicatedness, completeness, and changeableness. The model enables to incorporate various aspects of narrative complexity from different theoretical and practical perspectives into one consistent framework. The presented model consists of eight interconnected aspects: 1) differentiation and integration of topic storytelling, 2) differentiation and integration of agency, 3) differentiation and integration of narrative construction, 4) differentiation and integration of values and believes embodiment, 5) differentiation and integration at the level of reflection, 6) differentiation and integration of different perspectives, 7) differentiation and integration of characters (protagonists), 8) differentiation and integration in communication and socio-cultural contexts. Theoretical and empirical consequences of the model are also discussed.

Recent findings indicate that neural mechanisms of consciousness are related to integration of distributed neural assemblies. This neural integration is particularly vulnerable to past stressful experiences that can lead to disintegration and dissociation of consciousness. These findings suggest that dissociation could be described as a level of neural disintegration reflecting a number of independent processes by means of neural complexity. In the present study measurement of dissociation, traumatic stress symptoms and neural complexity calculated using nonlinear analysis of EEG [during rest conditions], and electrodermal activity (EDA) [during rest and Stroop task] were performed in 52 university students (mean age 24.1). Neural complexity has been described using pointwise correlation dimension (PD2) calculated from EEG and EDA records. While no significant relationship was found between EEG complexity and dissociative symptoms, statistically significant relationship between EDA complexity and dissociative symptoms during rest, but not during the Stroop task, has been found. These results indicate that electrodermal complexity during rest may reflect a level of dissociative symptoms.
