Okruhy bazálnych ganglií podporujú široké spektrum senzomotorických, kognitívnych a emočne-motivačných funkcií mozgu.
The circuits of basal ganglia support a wide range of sensorimotor, cognitive and emotional- motivational brain functions. A mainrole of the basal ganglia is a learning and selection of the most appropriate motor and behavioral programs. The internal functionalorganization of the basal ganglia is important for selection mechanisms. Development of basal ganglia and cerebellum takesplace over an extended period of time, in human spanning almost two decades. Factor that affect the normal development ofthe brain affect the functions of both structures. An important issue for future research might be the more precise determinationof the contribution of the basal ganglia and the cerebellum to the learning of skillful movements, an interesting question is theextent of interaction between these two structures.

The proceedings of the workshop synthesize the experimental, preclinical, and clinical data suggesting that the cerebellum, basal ganglia (BG), and their connections play an important role in pathophysiology of various movement disorders (like Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonian syndromes) or neurodevelopmental disorders (like autism). The contributions from individual distinguished speakers cover the neuroanatomical research of complex networks, neuroimaging data showing that the cerebellum and BG are connected to a wide range of other central nervous system structures involved in movement control. Especially, the cerebellum plays a more complex role in how the brain functions than previously thought.

Epilepsy may affect connectivity between the putamen and cortex even during the resting state. Putamen is part of the basal ganglia resting state network (BG-RSN) which is anti-correlated with the default mode network (DMN) in healthy subjects. Therefore, we aimed at studying the functional brain connectivity (FC) of the putamen with the cortical areas engaged in the DMN as well as with the primary somatomotor cortex which is a cortical region engaged in the BG-RSN. We compared the data obtained in patients with epilepsy with that in healthy controls (HC). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was performed in 10 HC and 24 patients with epilepsy: 14 patients with extratemporal epilepsy (PE) and 10 patients with temporal epilepsy (PT). Resting state fMRI data was obtained using the 1.5 T Siemens Symphony scanner. The Group ICA of fMRI Toolbox (GIFT) program was used for independent component analysis. The component representing the DMN was chosen according to a spatial correlation with a mask typical for DMN. The FC between the putamen and the primary somatomotor cortex was studied to assess the connectivity of the putamen within the BG-RSN. A second-level analysis was calculated to evaluate differences among the groups using SPM software. In patients with epilepsy as compared to HC, the magnitude of anti-correlation between the putamen and brain regions engaged in the DMN was significantly lower. In fact, the correlation changed the connectivity direction from negative in HC to positive in PE and PT. The disturbed FC of the BG in patients with epilepsy as compared with HC was further illustrated by a significant decrease in connectivity between the left/right putamen and the left/right somatomotor cortex, i.e. between regions that are engaged in the BG-RSN. The FC between the putamen and the cortex is disturbed in patients with epilepsy. This may reflect an altered function of the BG in epilepsy.

Cíl: Cílem práce je objasnění průběhu jednotlivých drah laterálního aspektu mozkové hemisféry, dokumentace jejich polohy vůči sobě i ostatním strukturám mozku. Předkládáme postup laboratorní disekce subkortikálních oblastí. Materiál a metodika: Technikou dle Josefa Klinglera spočívající ve zmrazení formalínem fixovaného mozku jsme připravili a následně provedli laboratorní mikrodisekci šesti hemisfér. Výsledky jsme dokumentovali formou mikro- a makrofotografií, průběh jednotlivých drah jsme korelovali s výsledky traktografie u zdravého dobrovolníka. Výsledky: Disekční technikou jsme dokumentovali anatomii inzuly, laterálních lentikulostriatických perforátorů, fasciculus longitudinalis superior a inferior, fronto- occipitalis, uncinatus, claustrokortikálních spojů v capsula externa, commissura anterior a capsula interna.
Aim: The aim of our study was to elucidate the individual fiber tracts courses of the lateral aspect of the hemisphere and documentation of their position relative to each other and also relative to other brain structures. We present a simple manual for the technique of dissection of the subcortical areas. Materials and methods: Using the Joseph Klingler's technique consisting of freezing the formalin-fixed brain, we prepared and consequently performed the laboratory microdissection on six hemispheres. We documented the results with microand macrophotographs and correlated the course of the individual tracts with the results of DTI-tractography in a healthy volunteer. Results: Using the dissection technique, we documented the anatomy of the insula, lateral lenticulostriate perforating arteries, superior and inferior longitudinal fascicle, occipitofrontal, uncinate, claustrocortical connections in the external capsule, anterior commissure and internal capsule. All of these tracts, excluding the inferior longitudinal fascicle, which is hardly separable from the geniculocalcarine tract, are clearly and illustrativelly identifiable by the fiber dissection technique. Conclusion: The described dissection technique represents a practical educational tool; it enables neurosurgeon to understand the complexity of brain functional connections and should be accessible to all neurosurgery residents.

INTRODUCTION: Studies of brain morphology suggest a link between movement sequencing ability and basal ganglia dysfunction. Unfortunately, relevant studies have provided inconsistent data, which may be the result of differences in the methods of brain morphology assessment, statistical analysis or heterogeneity of the populations studied. AIM: To test the hypothesis of a link between the dysfunction of movement sequencing and basal ganglia morphology in a homogenous sample of first-episode schizophrenia patients. METHOD: Thirty-seven first-episode schizophrenia patients underwent an assessment of movement sequencing abilities using the NES scale and basal ganglia morphology from MR images. The data were compared with a group of 19 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. RESULTS: The group of first-episode patients had a higher concentration of gray matter than healthy controls in the putamen and pallidum in both hemispheres. Patients with abnormal sequencing of movements had lower gray matter concentration than patients without such abnormalities in the left putamen, and no differences were found between the symptomatic group and healthy controls. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION: Our study suggests the involvement of the left putamen in the movement sequencing abnormalities in schizophrenia. Because of the potential confounding effect of medication, the lack of support from external evidence and the low power to perform the whole-brain analysis the results should be considered as preliminary. Further studies, especially with antipsychotic-naive first-episode schizophrenia patients are needed to solve these issues.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatry disorder with several key symptoms, such as inattentiveness, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Neuropsychiatry studies have implicated the frontostriatal circuit in the pathological physiology of the disorder. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we examined the basal ganglia in 13 ADHD patients and eight unaffected comparison children. The volume of caudate, putamen and globus pallidus was measured. In the ADHD patients, we detected an increased left > right asymmetry of the basal ganglia. This reversal of asymmetry in the globus pallidus and caudate nucleus were statistically significant. These finding provide further evidence of morphological brain abnormalities in ADHD.
