The scope of this two-part review is to summarize publications dealing with CE and nanomaterials together. This topic can be viewed from two broad perspectives, and this article is trying to highlight these two approaches: (i) CE of nanomaterials, and (ii) nanomaterials in CE. The second part aims at summarization of publications dealing with application of nanomaterials for enhancement of CE performance either in terms of increasing the separation resolution or for improvement of the detection. To increase the resolution, nanomaterials are employed as either surface modification of the capillary wall forming open tubular column or as additives to the separation electrolyte resulting in a pseudostationary phase. Moreover, nanomaterials have proven to be very beneficial for increasing also the sensitivity of detection employed in CE or even they enable the detection (e.g., fluorescent tags of nonfluorescent molecules).

CE methods for the speciation of inorganic and organomercury compounds are reviewed. Sample preparation, separation conditions and detection modes are discussed. Efficient separation and sensitive determination of mercury species by CE typically involves complexation with various thiols, chromogenic and other chelating agents; however, some methods do not require complexation. Spectrophotometric detection based on UV-visible absorption is by far the most commonly used. Hyphenated techniques, such as CE/inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-MS, hydride generation coupled to ICP-MS or atomic fluorescence spectrometry and CE/atomic absorption spectrometry are gaining popularity due to their high sensitivity and selectivity. Last, but not least, the potential and applications of electrochemical methods for detection of separated mercury species are outlined.

The article brings a comprehensive survey of recent developments and applications of high-performance capillary electromigration methods, zone electrophoresis, ITP, IEF, affinity electrophoresis, EKC, and electrochromatography, to analysis, preparation, and physicochemical characterization of peptides. New approaches to the theoretical description and experimental verification of electromigration behavior of peptides and to methodology of their separations, such as sample preparation, adsorption suppression, and detection, are presented. Novel developments in individual CE and CEC modes are shown and several types of their applications to peptide analysis are presented: conventional qualitative and quantitative analysis, purity control, determination in biomatrices, monitoring of chemical and enzymatical reactions and physical changes, amino acid and sequence analysis, and peptide mapping of proteins. Some examples of micropreparative peptide separations are given and capabilities of CE and CEC techniques to provide important physicochemical characteristics of peptides are demonstrated.

Stanovení obsahu příbuzných látek v injekcích obsahujících ampicilin a v prášcích či granulátech i v příslušných rekonstituovaných perorálních tekutých lékových formách obsahujících ampicilin, amoxicilin, fenoxymethylpenicilin (penicilin V). Kontrola kvality bude prováděna pomocí moderních separačních analytických metod - HPLC a kapilární elektroforézy (CE); Determinantion of related substances in ampicillin injections,in powder and granules for oral suspensions and syrups and in reconstituted liquid preparations containing amoxicillin, ampocillin or phenoxymethylpenicollin (penicillin V). For this quality monitoring modern separation analytical techniques - HPLC and capillary electrophoresis (CE) will be used.
CE is well known for its many advantages, including the speed of the analyses; most of which can be accomplished in less than 10 min. However many potential fields of application such as pharmaceutical research and industry and clinical diagnostics require analyses of large numbers of samples and so need an even shorter analysis time to be practical. There are generally three main options for enhancing the throughput of electromigration methods - using microchip or multi-capillary systems or modifying the method preformed on single capillary instruments. The latter option will probably be the method of choice for most laboratories, since they are only equipped with classical commercial CE instrumentation. Although several approaches can be used - higher electric field, EOF modification, external pressure application during analysis, this article reviews one of the simplest and at the same time most used, the so-called short-end injection procedure.
