PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Men face distinctive health-related challenges as a result of biological, behavioral, and sociocultural factors. In addition, the modern healthcare system does not offer men equal opportunities and options to ensure sex-specific access and delivery to health services. Men's health concerns are, indeed, often not addressed or even forgotten. In this review, we wanted to assess the impact of biology and sociocultural effects on sex-specific life-expectancy. RECENT FINDINGS: Globally, men have a shorter life expectancy than women. With a 5.8 years gender gap in the USA and 5.4 in the EU-27 (both in 2022). Cardiovascular disease, cancer, and accidents continue to represent the primary causes of mortality for both genders with all having disproportional preponderance in men. In recent years, there has been a notable decline in age-adjusted mortality rates related to cancer, while there has been an increase in deaths from accidental and intentional self-harm. Moreover, in the United States, men are more likely than women to develop and die from nonsex-specific cancers. As a result, men's poor health affects productivity, absenteeism, and employment. SUMMARY: The status of men in healthcare is complex. It is rooted in history, culture, and institutions. To address disparities, we need a comprehensive approach that includes policy reforms, sociocultural changes, and a fair and equitable public discourse. Grassroots and top-down strategies are needed to ensure a value-based societal healthcare system acknowledging the unique health needs of men.

Several studies have demonstrated the positive effects of mindfulness and self-compassion on employee well-being, mental health, and resilience. The objective of this observational study was to explore the mutual relationships among the dimensions of self-compassion and particular characteristics of work-related well-being: work engagement, workaholism (excessive and compulsive work), and job boredom in a population of early career workers. In this quantitative cross-sectional study, 286 master's students with proper working experience were examined; results from 244 respondents were suitable for further data analysis. The Self-compassion Scale, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, Dutch Work Addiction Scale, and Dutch Boredom Scale were administered. Spearman's rank correlation analysis found a positive relationship between work engagement and excessive work and a negative relationship between work engagement and job boredom. Furthermore, a positive correlation was identified between compulsive work and negative subscales of the Self-compassion Scale. Structural equation modeling indicated that workaholism was a mediator between the negative scales of self-compassion and work engagement with job boredom. In conclusion, the negative aspects of self-compassion (isolation, self-judgment, and over-identification) are related to the symptoms of workaholism in young workers. Self-compassion-based interventions could help prevent the negative effects of compulsive and excessive work. Possible age-related explanations for the positive relationship between work engagement and workaholism (i.e., excessive work) are discussed. Future longitudinal research could identify the dynamics of the connection between self-compassion and work-related well-being from a long-term perspective.

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapy outcomes are typically measured in terms of symptom relief. However, this method might overlook important changes from clients' perspectives when they are asked to report on them. A more client-centred approach might bring a deeper understanding of psychotherapy outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the outcomes identified by clients within qualitative psychotherapy research. METHODS: The PsycArticles, PsycInfo, and MEDLINE Complete databases were searched for English language studies published until Nov 11, 2023. Additional studies were identified through references in the primary studies and previous meta-analyses or systematic reviews. Search terms were related to psychotherapy and counselling, clients' or patients' experiences, psychotherapy outcomes and changes, post-treatment perspectives, and types of qualitative methods. Qualitative studies on client-identified outcomes of individual psychotherapy were included. Findings related to clients' perceptions of psychotherapy outcomes were extracted (by ML and checked by TR and LT) and analysed (by all authors) using the descriptive-interpretative meta-analytic approach. All authors have personally experienced psychotherapy as clients. This study was pre-registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021277330). FINDINGS: We included 177 studies in the qualitative meta-analysis, from 24 countries, including descriptions from 2908 clients. Most of the studies were of good quality; they covered a wide range of therapeutic approaches and diagnoses. The descriptions of psychotherapy outcomes were classified into 60 meta-categories and grouped into ten clusters. These clusters related to clients' relational and social functioning; their emotional functioning; self-awareness, self-understanding, and more adaptive cognitive processing; behavioural functioning; developing their own resources; clients' attitudes towards themselves; generally embracing life; symptom and problem change; and more general wellbeing. The tenth cluster was outcomes that could not be clearly attributed to psychotherapy, which was considered outside the scope of this study. INTERPRETATION: The meta-analysis showed that clients value outcome dimensions beyond symptom reduction, such as deeper self-understanding, enhanced self-agency, and greater social engagement. By examining psychotherapy outcomes across various diagnoses and therapeutic approaches, we highlight limitations in traditional outcome measures, showing the need for more comprehensive, client-centred assessment tools and the value of incorporating qualitative methods into understanding dimensions of change. In an asymptomatic population, we investigated the relationships between glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and cartilage T2 relaxation time at the knee joint level. Fourteen and 17 participants with high and normal levels of HbA1c were recruited, respectively. A blood sample was used to determine the HbA1c level. T2 relaxation time (T2) of the superficial and deep parts of the femoral cartilage in the anterior, central, and posterior topographical sites was calculated using magnetic resonance (1.5 T) images. Each participant completed a knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score questionnaire (KOOS) and a series of biomechanical analyses while running at their self-selected speed. The group with a high level of HbA1c had a lower score of KOOS symptoms than the other group (P < 0.05). HbA1c was found to be negatively related to the KOOS symptoms score. The group with a high level of HbA1c had low T2 values in all of the investigated topographical sites of the knee femoral cartilage (P < 0.05 in all cases). T2 was negatively correlated with HbA1c levels in all investigated knee femoral cartilage regions. Our data suggest that the subjects with high levels of HbA1c were those with low knee joint symptoms and lower values of T2. These results indicate that HbA1c could be correlated with cartilage deterioration due to its ability to dehydrate collagen fibre, possibly acting as a risk factor for the development of osteoarthritis.

While there is substantial research on what people want in their romantic and sexual partners, much of this work focuses on WEIRD, youthful samples, fails to consider the role of undesirable characteristics (i.e., things people do not want in partners) at all, or in conjunction with desirable characteristics (i.e., things people do want in partners), and may be overly reliant on psychometric approaches to pivotal variables in mating psychology like mate value and sociosexuality. In a nationally representative (online) sample of 2280 people from Czechia (aged between 18 and 50 years old), we examined linear and quadratic age, education, and self-perceived mate value (desirability) effects on the desired levels in mate choice of eight undesirable and seven desirable characteristics in men and women in relation to ostensible metrics of mate value. Self-perceived mate value alone explained little variance (men 1%, women 2%), while all mate value and mating strategy indicators together explained little variance of mate preferences and aversions (men 3%, women 5%). Desirable characteristics were better explained by mate value than undesirable ones. Our results are in line with evolutionary predictions suggesting that women are more demanding. Also, more qualities to offer correlate with more expectations in a partner.

Developing bioinspired materials to convert sunlight into electricity efficiently is paramount for sustainable energy production. Fluorescent proteins are promising candidates as photoactive materials due to their high fluorescence quantum yield and absorption extinction coefficients in aqueous media. However, developing artificial bioinspired photosynthetic systems requires a detailed understanding of molecular interactions and energy transfer mechanisms in the required operating conditions. Here, the supramolecular self-assembly and photophysical properties of fluorescent proteins complexed with organic dyes are investigated in aqueous media. Supercharged mGreenLantern protein, mutated to have a charge of +22, is complexed together with anionic zinc phthalocyanines having 4 or 16 carboxylate groups. The structural characterization reveals a strong electrostatic interaction between the moieties, accompanied by partial conformational distortion of the protein structure, yet without compromising the mGreenLantern chromophore integrity as suggested by the lack of emission features related to the neutral form of the chromophore. The self-assembled biohybrid shows a total quenching of protein fluorescence, in favor of an energy transfer process from the protein to the phthalocyanine, as demonstrated by fluorescence lifetime and ultrafast transient absorption measurements. These results provide insight into the rich photophysics of fluorescent protein-dye complexes, anticipating their applicability as water-based photoactive materials.

This study focused on the relationship between emerging didactical strategies and delivery of quality education service to students with learning disabilities in Cross River State, Nigeria. It adopted quantitative methodology and descriptive survey as the design. The population consist of all stakeholders with bias in learning disabilities in the state with 61 participants purposively sampled for the study, two null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A 20 item self-developed and validated questionnaire of 4 points Likert scale titled; Delivery of quality Education Service (QDES) was used for data collection. Data were statistically analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Cor- relation Analysis at 0.05 level of significance with assistance of SPSS software. Findings indicate strong positive relationship between the variables, this means that, ICT-tools and instructional accommodations are essential to the provision of quality education service to students with learning disabilities. It was recommended among others that, ICT-tools and instructional accommodations should compulsorily be an integral part of educational plan for these learners, the capacity of teachers and learners should be upgraded to meet the emerging realities of the 21st century education system and finally, policy and legislative frame work should support practical use of these strategies to improve and sustain quality service delivery in schools
This study investigated the relationships among indecisiveness, self-esteem, and repetitive negative thinking in a sample of emerging adults. It also explored how these factors are related to the dimensions of emerging adulthood and assessed whether self-esteem and repetitive negative thinking can predict levels of indecisiveness. To achieve these objectives, 202 respondents aged 18 to 29 completed several assessments, including the Indecisiveness Scale, the Perseverative Thinking Questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Inventory of the Dimensions of Emerging Adulthood. The findings revealed correlations among indecisiveness, self-esteem, and repetitive negative thinking. Specifically, there was a negative relationship between indecisiveness and self- esteem, a negative relationship between self-esteem and repetitive negative thinking, and a positive relationship between indecisiveness and repetitive negative thinking. Regarding the dimensions of emerging adulthood, instability/negativity proved to be the most significant correlate of the constructs examined. Furthermore, the results indicated that both self-esteem and repetitive negative thinking can predict levels of indecisiveness in emerging adults and explain 56% of its variance.
We are experiencing a significant increase in mental health problems in adolescence. adolescence is a specific period of human development during which a young person gains more independence, but at the same time becomes also more vulnerable. Family factors can both contribute to an increased risk of developing a mental disorder, and serve as a protective factor. the development of mental health problems is usually multifactorial. in contemporary transactional models, the role of the family in the etiopathogenesis of these disorders is explained by complex reciprocal interactions between the individual‘s vulnerability and the family environment. Family members of the adolescent can also be involved in treatment. there are several psychotherapeutic procedures that have been adapted for working with adolescents, and most of them offer a possibility of working with their family.
