The iron atom possesses unique properties, being manifested in the heme molecule. In addition to the involvement of heme in many processes (such as oxygen or electron transport and catalysis of enzyme reaction), it can also regulate key pathways critical for health. Heme-containing sensor proteins mediate the heme regulation role. The review aims to underline the main characteristics of the heme-containing sensor proteins group, either sensing heme or sensing a gas molecule through a heme-binding site, on the example of specific representatives from each sensor subgroup.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of apnea detection using a tracheal sound (TS) sensor during sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. METHODS: Polysomnographic recordings of 32 patients (25 male, mean age 66.7 ± 15.3 years, and mean body mass index 30.1 ± 4.5 kg/m2) were analyzed to compare the detection of apneas by four different methods of airflow signals: oronasal thermal airflow sensor (thermistor), nasal pressure transducer (NP), respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIPsum) and TS. The four used signals were scored randomly and independently from each other according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine rules. Results of apnea detection using NP, RIPsum and TS signals were compared to those obtained by thermistor as a reference signal. RESULTS: The number of apneas detected by the thermistor was 4,167. The number of apneas detected using the NP was 5,416 (+29.97%), using the RIPsum was 2,959 (-29.71%) and using the TS was 5,019 (+20.45%). The kappa statistics (95% confidence interval) were 0.72 (0.71 to 0.74) for TS, 0.69 (0.67 to 0.70) for NP, and 0.57 (0.55 to 0.59) for RIPsum. The sensitivity/specificity (%) with respect to the thermistor were 99.23/69.27, 64.07/93.06 and 96.06/76.07 for the NP, RIPsum and TS respectively. CONCLUSIONS: With the sensor placed properly on the suprasternal notch, tracheal sounds could help detecting apneas that are underscored by the RIPsum and identify apneas that may be overscored by the NP sensor due to mouth breathing. In the absence of thermistor, TS sensors can be used for apnea detection. Determining conditions optimal for host growth, maximal protein yield, and lysis buffer composition is of critical importance for the efficient purification of soluble and well-folded recombinant proteins suitable for functional and/or structural studies. Small-scale optimization of conditions for protein production and stability saves time, labor, and costs. Here we describe a protocol for quick protein production and solubility screen using TissueLyser II system from Qiagen enabling simultaneous processing of 96 protein samples, with application to recombinant proteins encompassing two intracellular domains of ethylene-recognizing sensor histidine kinase ETHYLENE RESPONSE1 (ETR1) from Arabidopsis thaliana. We demonstrate that conditions for expression and cell lysis found in our small-scale screen allow successful large-scale production of pure and functional domains of sensor histidine kinase, providing a strategy potentially transferable to other similar catalytic domains.

In this analysis, we present results from measurements performed to determine the stability of a hand tracking system and the accuracy of the detected palm and finger's position. Measurements were performed for the evaluation of the sensor for an application in an industrial robot-assisted assembly scenario. Human-robot interaction is a relevant topic in collaborative robotics. Intuitive and straightforward control tools for robot navigation and program flow control are essential for effective utilisation in production scenarios without unnecessary slowdowns caused by the operator. For the hand tracking and gesture-based control, it is necessary to know the sensor's accuracy. For gesture recognition with a moving target, the sensor must provide stable tracking results. This paper evaluates the sensor's real-world performance by measuring the localisation deviations of the hand being tracked as it moves in the workspace.
Use of a multi-sensor approach can provide citizens with holistic insights into the air quality of their immediate surroundings and their personal exposure to urban stressors. Our work, as part of the ICARUS H2020 project, which included over 600 participants from seven European cities, discusses the data fusion and harmonization of a diverse set of multi-sensor data streams to provide a comprehensive and understandable report for participants. Harmonizing the data streams identified issues with the sensor devices and protocols, such as non-uniform timestamps, data gaps, difficult data retrieval from commercial devices, and coarse activity data logging. Our process of data fusion and harmonization allowed us to automate visualizations and reports, and consequently provide each participant with a detailed individualized report. Results showed that a key solution was to streamline the code and speed up the process, which necessitated certain compromises in visualizing the data. A thought-out process of data fusion and harmonization of a diverse set of multi-sensor data streams considerably improved the quality and quantity of distilled data that a research participant received. Though automation considerably accelerated the production of the reports, manual and structured double checks are strongly recommended.

The treatment of some inborn metabolism errors requires cholesterol substitution therapy. Cholesterol plays a vital role in the human body. Therefore, the majority of cholesterol determination techniques are targeted to blood and blood serum. Nevertheless, cholesterol determination in food is important as well. In this paper, cholesterol determination using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in dairy products (e.g., milk, clotted cream, yogurt, butter, etc.) is reported with a novel nonenzymatic sensor based on diphosphonic acid of 1,4-diacetylglycoluril (DPADGU) as an electrode surface modifier. Stable anodic response was obtained from cholesterol on the modified carbon-based electrode. The sensor has high stability, sensitivity (20 μA mol L-1 cm-2), and a wide linear range from 1 up to 200 μM. The LOD and LOQ values are 1.5 and 5.1 μM, respectively. The developed methods were successfully applied to the above mentioned dairy products. Graphical abstract ᅟ.
