Despite the availability of many effective treatments, there remains a therapeutic nihilism associated with brain tumors. This highly readable second edition of 'Fast Facts: Brain Tumors' challenges this view, starting from the premise that patients with brain tumors can truly benefit from a thoughtful multidisciplinary approach. This comprehensive handbook covers all the salient features of the various brain tumors and treatment modalities in a way that will be useful to the practicing clinician.• Advances in radiology and pathology that have led to more precise and detailed diagnoses• Developments in molecular biology and imaging techniques that have improved available diagnostic modalities• New neurosurgical techniques that have enabled operations on tumors that were previously considered inoperable• Novel delivery systems that allow various treatments to reach tumors that are otherwise protected by the blood-brain barrier. This fully updated edition of 'Fast Facts: Brain Tumors' bridges the gap between primary care providers - whose role is pivotal in tumor detection and subsequent patient care - and first-level specialists such as general neurologists and neurosurgeons. Its key message is that selection of the best initial approach for an individual patient will result in the best overall outcome, both in terms of survival and quality of life.'Fast Facts: Brain Tumors' is specifically for the primary care physician whose role is pivotal in tumor detection and subsequent patient care.Contents:• Classification and epidemiology• Diagnosis• Treatment• Brain metastases• Gliomas• Meningiomas• Neuronal tumors• Pineal region tumors• Skull base tumors• Primary central nervous system lymphoma• Brain tumor syndromes and tumor-like cysts• Geriatric neuro-oncology• Useful resources

Klinické příznaky intrakraniálních mozkových nádorů dělíme do tří skupin: generalizované příznaky, ložiskové příznaky z iritace nebo destrukce mozkové tkáně nádorem a ložiskové příznaky vzdálené. Psychopatologické změny se u mozkových nádorů většinou objevují až v době, kdy je plně vyjádřená neurologická symptomatika. V některých případech ale mohou být prvním projevem nádoru mozku.
Mental symptoms of brain tumors are divided into three categories: generalized signs, focal symptoms due to irritation or brain tissue destruction, and distant focal symptoms. Psychopatology usually occurs after neurological signs have been fully expressed. In s ome cases, psychiatric symptoms may present the first sign sof a brain tumors.

Autori predkladajú kazuistiky dvoch chorých s relapsujúcou - remitujúcou sclerosis multiplex (SM), u ktorých bola diagnóza kWnicky istej a laboratórne podporenej SM (Poserove kritériá) stanovená približne tri roky pred objavením sa intrakraniálnych nádorov. Obaja užívali rôzne dlhú dobu imunomodulačnú (IFNp-la, Avonex®) a imunosupresívnu liečbu. Komorbidita SM a zhub¬ ných nádorov mozgu je pomerne vzácna, no nie výnimočná. Kauzálny vzťah medzi oboma ochoreniami nebol doteraz dokázaný.
The authors have presented case-reports of two patients with relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) whose diagnosis of laboratory supported definite MS (Poser's criteria) was established about three years before the appearance of intracranial tumors. Both patients were given immunomodulating (IFNbeta-la, Avonex) and immunosuppresive therapy for a period of various duration. In the case of a 42-year-old man. the course of MS was complicated with a multifocal tumor in the suprasellar region and in the left cerebral hemisphere, confirmed by histology as an astrocytoma, resulting in the patient's death. In the other case of a 25-year-old man, there was demonstrated an extensive cystic expansive process of mesencephalon with a tri-ventricular hydrocephalus. Only ventriculoperitoneal drainage was carried out kvithout histological verification of a tumorous formation. Besides a primary brain neuroplasm, the possibility of metastatic affection (mixed germ cell tumor) revealed together with the intracranial expansion is not eliminated in this patient. The co-morbidity of MS and malignant brain tumors is relatively rare, but not exceptional. A causal relationship between the two disorders has not been proved so far.
