Human migration is an increasingly common phenomenon and migrants are at risk of disadvantageous treatment. We reasoned that migrants may receive differential treatment by locals based on the closeness of their facial features to the host average. Residents of Türkiye, the country with the largest number of refugees currently, served as participants. Because many of these refugees are of Arabic origin, we created target facial stimuli varying along the axis connecting Turkish and Arabic morphological prototypes (excluding skin colour) computed using geometric morphometrics and available databases. Participants made judgements of two universal dimensions of social perception-warmth and competence-on these faces. We predicted that participants judging faces manipulated towards the Turkish average would provide higher warmth and competence ratings compared to judging the same faces manipulated towards the Arabic average. Bayesian statistical tools were employed to estimate parameter values in multilevel models with intercorrelated varying effects. The findings did not support the prediction and revealed raters (as well as target faces) to be an important source of variation in social judgements. In the absence of simple cues (e.g. skin colour, group labels), the effect of facial morphology on social judgements may be much more complex than previously assumed.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The primary objective was to compare diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scalar parameters of peripheral nerves between subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and those without diabetes. Secondarily, we aimed to correlate DTI scalar parameters with nerve morphometric properties. METHODS: Median, tibial, and sural nerves were harvested from 34 male cadavers (17 T2DM, 17 nondiabetic). Each nerve was divided into three segments. The initial segment was scanned using 9.4 Tesla MRI system (three-dimensional pulsed-gradient spin-echo sequence). DTI scalars were calculated from region-average diffusion-weighted signals. Second segment was optically cleared, acquired with optical projection tomography (OPT), and analyzed for morphometrical properties. Toluidine-stained sections were prepared from last segment, and axon- and myelin-related properties were evaluated. RESULTS: DTI scalar parameters of median and tibial nerves were comparable between the groups, while sural nerves of T2DM exhibited on average 41% higher mean diffusivity (MD) (p = 0.03), 38% higher radial diffusivity (RD) (p = 0.03), and 27% lower fractional anisotropy (FA) (p = 0.005). Significant differences in toluidine-evaluated parameters of sural nerves were observed between the groups, with a positive correlation between FA with fiber density (p = 0.0001) and with myelin proportion (p < 0.0001) and an inverse correlation between RD and myelin proportion (p = 0.003). OPT-measured morphometric properties did not correlate with DTI scalar parameters. CONCLUSIONS: High-field DTI shows promise as an imaging technique for detecting axonal and myelin-related changes in small sural nerves ex vivo. The reduced fiber density and decreased myelin content, which can be observed in T2DM, likely contribute to observed FA reduction and increased MD/RD.

Hlavními limitacemi v současné době zůstávají potřeba kontrastování vzorků, monochromatická povaha obrazu a vysoká radiační zátěž. Pokrok v technologickém vývoji však může tyto překážky překonat a umožnit širší využití mikroCT v rutinní klinické diagnostice. Tento článek představuje technologii mikroCT a její diagnostický potenciál v patologii, přibližuje její aplikace, výhody a omezení, a nabízí vhled do budoucí perspektivy jejího využití.
X-ray microtomography (microCT) represents a modern high-resolution imaging technology enabling detailed analysis of the tissue. It offers a unique perspective on three-dimensional architecture, bridging the gap between macroscopic and histological imaging. In anatomical pathology, microCT is particularly utilized for morphometric tumor analysis, evaluation of surgical specimen resection margins, and detection of metastases in lymph nodes. The combination of microCT with traditional histopathological techniques, and with digital 3D reconstructions, opens new avenues for analyzing complex pathological processes. Although this method is currently used in research, its clinical potential is significant. Key advantages include non-invasive imaging and the ability to be integrated with digital pathology and artificial intelligence tools. Current limitations include the need for sample contrast enhancement, the monochromatic nature of the images, and high radiation exposure. Advances in technological development, however, may overcome these barriers and enable the broader adoption of microCT in routine clinical diagnostics. This article explores the diagnostic potential of microCT in pathology, highlighting its applications, advantages, and limitations, while offering insights into current capabilities and future perspectives of this technology.
INTRODUCTION: The communicating veins between the great and small saphenous veins, called intersaphenous veins, are often overlooked structures, except for the femoral intersaphenous vein (of Giacomini). The reason for tendency to neglect the crural intersaphenous veins can be their alleged high variability. The aim of the study was to bring reliable anatomical and morphometric data about the crural intersaphenous veins for their potential clinical usage as grafts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this ultrasonographic study performed on a young population, we screened 246 lower extremities. The incidence of the femoral intersaphenous vein was 51.2 % (126/246) and the incidence of at least one crural intersaphenous vein was 97.1 % (239/246). Two crural intersaphenous veins were observed in 46.7 % (115/246). RESULTS: The femoral intersaphenous vein was located exclusively on the thigh, with its average length of 26.35 cm and average calibre of 2.4 mm. The typical area where to find a crural intersaphenous vein is the middle medial part of the calf. Their course can be straight transverse, oblique or they can rarely make a plexus. The majority of intersaphenous veins of the leg do not possess valves, if so, those are parietal valves present in 10.3 % (39/379). An average length of 13.7 cm and an average calibre of 2.13 mm of intersaphenous veins of the leg are appropriate enough for their usage as a venous graft or in reconstruction surgery. CONCLUSION: The intersaphenous veins of the leg are not as variable as presented in previous studies. Their anatomical and topographical characteristics are fairly constant. According to their anatomical characteristics, crural intersaphenous veins could be surgically used as a suitable variant to the great saphenous vein, small saphenous vein and femoral intersaphenous vein.

Offspring of parents with severe mental illness are at increased risk of developing psychopathology. Identifying endophenotypic markers in high-familial-risk individuals can aid in early detection and inform development of prevention strategies. Using generalized additive mixed models, we compared age trajectories of gyrification index (GI) and sulcal morphometric measures (i.e., sulcal depth, length and width) between individuals at familial risk for bipolar disorder or schizophrenia and controls. 300 T1-weighted MRI scans were obtained of 187 individuals (53 % female, age range: 8-23 years) at familial risk for bipolar disorder (n = 80, n families=55) or schizophrenia (n = 53, n families=36) and controls (n = 54, n families=33). 113 individuals underwent two scans. Globally, GI, sulcal depth and sulcal length decreased significantly with age, and sulcal width increased significantly with age in a (near-)linear manner. There were no differences between groups in age trajectories or mean values of gyrification or any of the sulcal measures. These findings suggest that, on average, young individuals at familial risk for bipolar disorder or schizophrenia have preserved developmental patterns of gyrification and sulcal morphometrics during childhood and adolescence.

Extracellular matrix (ECM) is a network of macromolecules which has two forms-perineuronal nets (PNNs) and a diffuse ECM (dECM)-both influence brain development, synapse formation, neuroplasticity, CNS injury and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. ECM remodeling can influence extrasynaptic transmission, mediated by diffusion of neuroactive substances in the extracellular space (ECS). In this study we analyzed how disrupted PNNs and dECM influence brain diffusibility. Two months after oral treatment of rats with 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU), an inhibitor of hyaluronan (HA) synthesis, we found downregulated staining for PNNs, HA, chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans, and glial fibrillary acidic protein. These changes were enhanced after 4 and 6 months and were reversible after a normal diet. Morphometric analysis further indicated atrophy of astrocytes. Using real-time iontophoretic method dysregulation of ECM resulted in increased ECS volume fraction α in the somatosensory cortex by 35%, from α = 0.20 in control rats to α = 0.27 after the 4-MU diet. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed a decrease of mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy (FA) in the cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, pallidum, and spinal cord. This study shows the increase in ECS volume, a loss of FA, and changes in astrocytes due to modulation of PNNs and dECM that could affect extrasynaptic transmission, cell-to-cell communication, and neural plasticity.

This study aimed to compare the fascicular anatomy of upper limb nerves visualized using in situ high-resolution ultrasound (HRUS) with ex vivo imaging modalities, namely, magnetic resonance microscopy (MRM), histological cross-sections (HCS), and optical projection tomography (OPT). The median, ulnar, and superficial branch of radial nerve (n = 41) were visualized in 14 cadaveric upper limbs using 22-MHz HRUS. Subsequently, the nerves were excised, imaged with different microscopic techniques, and their morphometric properties were compared. HRUS accurately differentiated 51-74% of fascicles, while MRM detected 87-92% of fascicles when compared to the referential HCS. Among the compared modalities, HRUS demonstrated the smallest fascicular ratios and fascicular cross-sectional areas, but the largest nerve cross-sectional areas. The probability of a fascicle depicted on HRUS representing a cluster of multiple fascicles on the referential HCS increased with the fascicular size, with some differences observed between the larger median and ulnar nerves and the smaller radial nerves. Accordingly, HRUS fascicle differentiation necessitates cautious interpretation, as larger fascicles are more likely to represent clusters. Although HCS is considered the reference modality, alterations in nerve cross-sectional areas or roundness during sample processing should be acknowledged.

Cerebellar atrophy is a characteristic sign of late-onset Tay-Sachs disease (LOTS). Other structural neuroimaging abnormalities are inconsistently reported. Our study aimed to perform a detailed whole-brain analysis and quantitatively characterize morphometric changes in LOTS patients. Fourteen patients (8 M/6F) with LOTS from three centers were included in this retrospective study. For morphometric brain analyses, we used deformation-based morphometry, voxel-based morphometry, surface-based morphometry, and spatially unbiased cerebellar atlas template. The quantitative whole-brain morphometric analysis confirmed the finding of profound pontocerebellar atrophy with most affected cerebellar lobules V and VI in LOTS patients. Additionally, the atrophy of structures mainly involved in motor control, including bilateral ventral and lateral thalamic nuclei, primary motor and sensory cortex, supplementary motor area, and white matter regions containing corticospinal tract, was present. The atrophy of the right amygdala, hippocampus, and regions of occipital, parietal and temporal white matter was also observed in LOTS patients in contrast with controls (p < 0.05, FWE corrected). Patients with dysarthria and those initially presenting with ataxia had more severe cerebellar atrophy. Our results show predominant impairment of cerebellar regions responsible for speech and hand motor function in LOTS patients. Widespread morphological changes of motor cortical and subcortical regions and tracts in white matter indicate abnormalities in central motor circuits likely coresponsible for impaired speech and motor function.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Os vesalianum pedis (OVP) is a rare accessory bone of the foot located at the base of the fifth metatarsal bone. It is usually asymptomatic and incidentally seen on radiographs. When symptomatic, it manifests itself with lateral foot pain. OVP, which can become symptomatic as a result of traumatic injuries, can also be confused with fracture. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and morphometric characteristics of OVP in the Turkish population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Radiographic images of 5268 individuals aged 16 years and older (mean 39.65±17.21) who completed ossification of the fifth metatarsal bone were evaluated for OVP. Of the cases included in the study, 44.8% were female and 55.2% were male. The general and sex-based prevalence of OVP was calculated, and morphometric measurements were done. RESULTS: OVP prevalence in the Turkish population was found to be 0.15% regardless of sex. OVP prevalence was calculated to be 0.24% in men and 0.04% in women. CONCLUSIONS: Anatomy, radiology, orthopedics and emergency medicine physicians are frequently encountered with foot disorders in clinical and educational practices. It is important to keep in mind the rare presence of OVP (0.15%), in the preliminary diagnosis. KEY WORDS: os vesalianum pedis, accessory ossicle, foot, radiography.

Adverse events during the perinatal period are associated with an increased risk to develop cardiometabolic diseases later in life. We established a murine model to study long-term effects of perinatal hypoxia (PH) on the pulmonary circulation. We previously demonstrated that PH led to an impaired regulation of pulmonary vascular tone in adulthood, linked to alterations in K+ channels in males and in the nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic guanosine monophosphate pathway in females. Moreover, simultaneous administration of inhaled NO (iNO) during PH exposure prevented adverse effects of PH on adult pulmonary vasculature in females. The present study showed that PH induced a significant increase in right ventricular pressure in males and females, and an enhanced sensitivity to acute hypoxia in females. PH significantly reduced acetylcholine-induced relaxation in pulmonary artery, to a greater extent in females than in males. PH led to right ventricular hypertrophy in adulthood, appearing earlier in males than in females. Morphometric measurements showed a significant increase in the number of 25-75-μm pulmonary vessels in male lungs following PH, probably resulting in increased pulmonary vascular resistance. The effects of prolonged hypoxia in adulthood differed between males and females. Perinatal iNO during PH prevented PH-induced alterations in the cardiopulmonary system, whereas perinatal iNO alone could have some adverse effects. Therefore, PH led to long-lasting alterations in the regulation of adult pulmonary circulation, which vary between males and females. In males, the increased pulmonary vascular resistance was associated with morphological changes besides functional alterations, whereas females showed an important pulmonary vascular dysfunction. Keywords: Perinatal hypoxia, Pulmonary circulation, Endothelium-dependent relaxation, Phosphodiesterases, Sex differences.
