BACKGROUND: Exposure to benzophenone-1 (BP-1) and benzophenone-3 (BP-3), widely used as UV filters in personal care products, has been associated with adverse health effects. However, epidemiological evidence is limited and inconclusive, particularly in vulnerable populations such as teenagers. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation between BP-1 and BP-3 concentrations and obesity, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and asthma/allergy outcomes in European teenagers, including possible sex-specific associations. METHODS: A multi-country cross-sectional study was conducted using pooled data from six aligned studies from the Human Biomonitoring for Europe Initiative (HBM4EU). Sociodemographic data, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and asthma/allergy outcomes were collected through questionnaires. Anthropometric data and BMI z-scores were calculated (n = 1339). Plasma/serum cardiometabolic biomarkers and asthma/allergy outcomes were available for a subsample (n = 173-594). Urinary BP-1 and BP-3 concentrations were adjusted for creatinine dilution using the traditional standardization (trad.) and the covariate-adjusted creatinine standardization (CAS) method. Generalized additive models, linear, logistic, and multinomial mixed models were applied, and sex-interaction terms were tested. RESULTS: Each natural log-unit increase in urinary BP-3 (CAS) concentrations was associated with higher odds of obesity in the whole population (OR: 1.20; 95%CI: 1.04-1.38). Sex-specific associations were also found with BP-1 (CAS) and BP-3 (CAS) concentrations, which were associated with higher odds of obesity in male teenagers (OR: 1.25; 95% CI: 1.01-1.55; OR: 1.34; 95%CI: 1.09-1.65, respectively). Linear mixed models showed consistent findings toward higher BMI z-scores. A negative association was found between BP-1 (CAS) concentration and serum adiponectin levels in females (% change per loge-unit increase: -3.73, 95%CI: -7.32, -0.10). BP-3 (CAS) concentrations were also associated with higher odds of non-food allergies in males (OR: 1.27; 95%CI: 1.00-1.63). Traditional creatinine adjustment showed similar or slightly attenuated estimates compared to the CAS method. CONCLUSIONS: BP-1 and BP-3 exposure was cross-sectionally associated with higher odds of obesity in European male teenagers, highlighting the need to update regulations and keep exposure levels as low as practically achievable. Longitudinal studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Food hydrocolloids, derived from natural sources such as plants, algae, and microbes, possess bioactive properties that significantly contribute to cardiovascular health. This review focuses on six key hydrocolloids: alginate, astragalus polysaccharides, carrageenan, fucoidan, lunasin, and psyllium, while also considering other important natural hydrocoloids such as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), plant-derived food hydrocolloids, plant-derived gums, plant-derived mucilages, pectin, modified citrus pectin, inulin, naringenin, chia seeds, gelatine, whey protein, casein, microbial exopolysaccharides and gums, ulvan, and laminarin. Alginate, from brown seaweed, aids in cardiac tissue regeneration and repair. Astragalus polysaccharides, from the Astragalus plant, provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory benefits. Carrageenan, sourced from red seaweed, supports lipid profile balance and heart health. Fucoidan, another brown seaweed derivative, offers antihypertensive and lipid-lowering effects. Lunasin, a peptide found in soybeans, oats, and barley, is known for its cholesterol-lowering properties and anti-inflammatory effects. Psyllium, rich in soluble fiber, helps lower LDL cholesterol and improve overall cardiovascular function. These hydrocolloids, along with other mentioned compounds, are utilized in drug formulations, cosmetics, processed foods, and dietary supplements, enhancing food texture and stability while delivering health benefits. Upon consumption, they can be absorbed into the bloodstream or metabolized by gut microbiota into bioactive metabolites. This review examines their effects on cardiovascular function, highlighting their mechanisms in regulating vascular tone, blood pressure, vascular inflammation, and cardiac function. It consolidates current research, emphasizing the potential of these hydrocolloids and related compounds in the prevention and management of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

INTRODUCTION: Pathogenesis of large B-cell lymphomas (LBCL) and follicular lymphomas (FL) is a multistep process associated with the development of diverse DNA alterations and consequent deregulation of critical cellular processes. Detection of tumor-associated mutations within non-tumor compartments (mainly plasma) is the basis of the 'liquid biopsy' concept. Apart from tumor mutational profiling, quantitative analysis of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) allows longitudinal assessment of tumor burden. ctDNA-based technologies provide a new tool for tumor diagnostics and treatment personalization. AREAS COVERED: Our review provides a comprehensive overview and summary of available ctDNA studies in LBCL and FL. The accuracy of ctDNA-based detection of lymphoma-associated DNA alterations is correlated to known LBCL and FL molecular landscape. Additionally, we summarized available evidence that supports and justifies the clinical use of ctDNA for lymphoma risk stratification, treatment response evaluation, and treatment response-adapted therapy. Lastly, we discuss other clinically important ctDNA applications: monitoring of lymphoma clonal evolution within resistance and/or relapse development and utilization of ctDNA for diagnostics in non-blood fluids and compartments (e.g. cerebrospinal fluid in primary CNS lymphomas). EXPERT OPINION: Despite certain challenges, including methodological standardization, ctDNA holds promise to soon become an integral part of lymphoma diagnostics and treatment management.

BACKGROUND: Understanding population health trends and their key determinants is essential for planning health services and implementing effective interventions. One of these determinants may be national cultural characteristics that are related to various health outcomes and health-related behaviours. However, little is known about their potential association to overall burden of disease. Thus, this study examined whether cultural characteristics expressed by Hofstede indexes are associated with the burden of disease. METHODS: We used data from open-source databases - Hofstede's Cultural Index, the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) and the Human Development Index (HDI). The final sample comprised 69 countries covering all the continents. The burden of disease was measured using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years lived with disabilities (YLD), and years of life lost (YLL). National cultural characteristics were measured using Hofstede's dimensions. Bayesian correlation analyses were conducted to assess the relationships between cultural dimensions and health outcomes, stratified by countries' HDI levels. RESULTS: In countries with a very high HDI, there was strong evidence (Bayes Factor > 10) of a positive correlation of Power distance with the total disability-adjusted life years (r = 0.448) and years of life lost (r = 0.528), and Individualism (r = 0.667) and Indulgence (r = 0.494) with years lived with disabilities. In contrast, Long-term orientation negatively correlated of with years lived with disabilities (r = -0.527) and Indulgence with disability-adjusted life years (r = -0.437) and years of life lost (r = -0.537). Further, Power distance and Indulgence were correlated with the majority of the GBD indicators and Individualism with a few GBD indicators. In countries with a high and medium HDI, strong evidence of the associations was found in only a few cases. CONCLUSION: We found a correlation between national cultural characteristics and burden of disease. Policy-makers should consider integrating cultural factors into public health strategies to better align healthcare interventions with the local population's values and behaviours. Moreover, cross-cultural research and collaboration should increase to understand how cultural influences can be used to mitigate disease burdens and improve health outcomes globally. This study also opens a potentially new research area within population health research.
BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness, the pharmacological treatment of which comprises primarily the use of antipsychotics. However, non-adherence to their use and its reliable determination present a serious clinical and economic problem. This study aimed to determine therapeutic adherence in outpatients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders by combining short-term electronic monitoring of dispenser opening with the measurement of antipsychotic blood concentrations. METHODS: A total of 55 patients underwent a week-long electronic monitoring of dispenser opening and measurement of blood concentrations before and after monitoring. Patients who correctly opened the dispenser at least in 80% of scheduled time points during the weekly interval and, at the same time, did not show a change in blood concentration of the antipsychotic by more than 30% in any direction, were considered adherent. RESULTS: 69.1% of the patients met the adherence criteria, which was less than that determined by the Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI-10), the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the Clinician Rating Scale (CRS). 7.3% of the patients took less than 80% of the prescribed doses and a change in blood concentrations of the antipsychotic by more than 30% was detected in 25.4% of the patients. In 70.9% of patients, the detected concentrations were within the recommended therapeutic reference interval. The groups of adherent and non-adherent patients did not differ statistically significantly in the severity of their illness as determined by the Clinical Global Impression (CGI), the Personal and Social Performance scale (PSP), and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). CONCLUSIONS: The combined method of evaluating adherence in schizophrenia patients confirmed the results determined by other methods. The benefits of this approach are described in the paper.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess patient satisfaction with the quality of healthcare services at selected public primary healthcare facilities in Almaty during the COVID-19 pandemic and to identify associated demographic and facility-related factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted over a period of 6 months, from 30 June to 31 December 2021, through a web-based survey. An adapted questionnaire was employed to survey the respondents. In total, 1035 respondents participated in the study. To examine the relationship between demographic and facility characteristics and patient satisfaction, we utilized the proportional odds model for ordinal logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of eight primary healthcare organizations from the public sector in Almaty participated in the survey. The analysis identified significant demographic predictors of patient satisfaction, such as marital status, social status, self-perceived health, and the use of online consultations. Among the facility-related factors, only the availability of a cross-ventilation system emerged as a significant predictor. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence for the factors influencing patient satisfaction with primary healthcare services in Almaty during the COVID-19 pandemic. Both demographic characteristics and facility-level attributes were found to significantly affect satisfaction levels. These findings underscore the need for targeted structural and organizational improvements in primary healthcare settings, especially during public health emergencies. Addressing these gaps through infrastructural upgrades, enhanced preparedness, and the integration of patient-centered care models can help to bolster trust and resilience within Kazakhstan's healthcare system.

Hepatitis B (VHB) and C (VHC) are significant global public health issues, particularly for certain risk groups. In the Czech Republic, individuals who inject drugs (IDUs), incarcerated people, and those with high-risk sexual behaviours are especially susceptible. This research investigates the epidemiology, risk factors, and effects of both diseases on these groups. It analyzes the incidence of VHB and VHC in Czechia over the last twenty years in the post-vaccine era, compares their occurrence, and identifies factors influencing their rates. A total of 28,160 VHB and VHC cases reported in the Czech Republic from 2000 to 2021 were analyzed, categorized into acute and chronic forms. Specifically, there were 8,762 cases of VHB and 19,398 cases of VHC. The research employed quantitative methods and descriptive data analysis. A spatial visualization of disease occurrence per 100,000 inhabitants in Czech districts was conducted for the years 2000, 2010, and 2020 to compare disease development and the risk group of IDUs across districts. For VHB, transmission primarily occurs through intravenous drug use or risky sexual behaviour, with IDUs, men who have sex with men, and promiscuous individuals being the most at-risk groups. For VHC, sexual transmission is less common, with IDUs being the most at-risk group. Many VHC cases have been recorded in prisons, often due to shared razors or amateur tattooing and piercing. This discovery underscores the necessity for focused interventions and thorough strategies to address both diseases in high-risk communities.

This study was conducted to determine and compare the effects of reformer pilates (RP) and mat pilates (MP) exercises on soccer players' physical parameters and technical skills. Thirty voluntary participants were randomly assigned to either RP group (n = 10; age = 20.60 ± 1.65), MP group (n = 10; age = 19.40 ± 1.35) and control group (CG) (n = 10; age = 20.10 ± 1.15). Technical and physical performance tests were performed. In the RP group counter movement jump (CMJ), standing broad jump (SBJ), single leg triple hop right-left, balance right-left leg, flexibility, 10-20m sprint, german agility (GA), speed dribbling (SPD), loughborough soccer passing (LSPT), lobbed passing right food, lobbed passing total measurement results showed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test mean values (p < 0.05). In the MP group, balance right-left leg, single leg triple hop right-left, 5 - 10m sprint, GA, SPD, LBP, lobbed passing right measurement results showed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test mean values (p < 0.05). The control group had no significant difference in the pre-test and post-test mean values of technical and physical performance measurements (p > 0.05). Between-group comparisons revealed superior improvements in GA, LSPT, and single-leg triple hop right-left in the RP group compared to the MP group. Based on these findings, coaches and sports performance specialists may enhance athletes' physical performance and technical skills by incorporating Pilates exercises (particularly RP) into training programs.
