Autoři v přehledovém článku shrnují současné možnosti mužské antikoncepce. Růst celosvětové populace a jeho dopad na životní prostředí a ekonomiku, především v rozvojových zemích, vyvolává globální potřebu podporovat jednotlivce při plánování rodiny. Zdravotnické organizace a farmaceutické společnosti jsou si této zodpovědnosti vědomy a finančně i logisticky podporují výzkum nových metod antikoncepce. Hormonální antikoncepce působí inhibicí spermatogeneze jako efektivní a reverzibilní antikoncepční metoda. Některé nehormonální přístupy k mužské antikoncepci mají překvapivé a slibné výsledky a mohou se stát základem pro vývoj nových metod. Přes poznatky v oblasti molekulární charakterizace pohlavních buněk a s tím spojené možnosti potlačení jejich proliferace, motility nebo schopnosti vazby gamet není žádná z dosud publikovaných metod kontracepce 100% funkční a použitelná pro všechny muže ve světové populaci a nezajišťuje plnou reverzibilitu u navozené neplodnosti. Jedinou bezpečnou a spolehlivou metodou tak zůstává vazektomie.
